So after finding out what the-album-that-somehow-comes-up-in-every-comment-thread was called, the only outstanding issue was: how exactly do you visually conceptualize a Veckatimest? I figure either you incorporate imagery of the namesake uninhabited isle, or create sort of a hand-drawn collage of various geometric shapes rendered in pastels and earth tones to capture the breadth of emotion and mood-spanning mystery conjured by the title’s syllabic string. Oh I guess the latter.

Nailed it. The LP cover comes from our friends at P4K. Ed tells us the artist is William O’Brien, the font was a hand drawn recreation by Amelia Bauer, and that the layout design was executed by Ben Tousley.

Here’s your properly sequenced tracklist:

01 “Southern Point”
02 “Two Weeks”
03 “All We Ask”
04 “Fine for Now”
05 “Cheerleader”
06 “Dory”
07 “Ready, Able”
08 “About Face”
09 “Hold Still”
10 “While You Wait for the Others”
11 “I Live With You”
12 “Foreground”

“Two Weeks” as track two, “Foreground” as the epilogue. Clever girl, Grizzly Bear. Veckatimest is out 5/26 via Warp. Some details to be had in this Progress Report.

The Veckatimest Island wiki is having a really good traffic year.

OK, I’m sick of the hype and hyperbole about this album. I’m sure I’ll love it but I would like to note that is one pretty album cover

    • Alex Jones  |   Posted on Feb 16th, 2009

Why should we care whether something is “hyped” or not? You’re showing your need for art to be your personal special something, and in doing so, missing one of the most edifying qualities of art.

  2. RIch  |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2009

    Sweet cover.

  3. Are these guys any good?

  4. John  |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2009

  8. james  |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2009

They have really tasteful art direction on most everything I have seen. Liking this as well.

  9. i can’t tell you (‘gum) how much i enjoy that you post covers for enjoyment. may they never be a lost art, no matter how digital music may go.

    • Keebler  |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2009

This comment deserves to win the comments of the year thread. Too true. I hope people still take time to make great covers. This is one of them, and you are pointing out a very important thing. Green Arrow UP for Eli and this album cover.

  10. Reminds me a lot of the very angular and crystalline motif of the Knife video, as well as the t-shirt I have of theirs based off of that motif.

The cover makes perfect sense to me for this band.

  11. ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmyOH.MY.GOD. ….ALBUM ARRRRRTT!!!!!! ….I LOVE LISTENING TO ALBUM ART!!! ….BUT NOT HALF AS MUCH AS PLUGGIN’ MY HEADPHONES STRAIGHT INTO A TYPED-UP TRACKLIST!!!! let’s pretend that the old fashioned press technique of releasing album art (OMG!), and a tracklist (boner alert!) tickling and teasing us until eventually they release an……M….P….3 (orgasm!!! SPLAT!!!!!) actually sells records and that everyone who reads stereogum isn’t going to download the record the second Veakfuadfuriiagamist (catchy title, GB!) leaks and make themselves feel better inside by saying to themselves “uhhhh…i bought their last record.”
    GO GO GADGET GRIZZLY BEAR!!!
“hey uh, do you have the new record by (palms all sweaty)…g-g-g-g-Grizzly b-b-b-bear?”
“yeah, i think so, lemme look it up in the computer, what’s it called?”
    “Vearargooseosurkskcaglarrrrf”
“oh yeah, we have like 10,000 copies of that still sitting on the shelves.”
    SNOOOOTCH!!!!

psycho… also, a pathetic little man.

  13. If you look at google earth, (or google Maps) you can see that there is a house or two on veckatimest island. Probably some sort of vacation home or something, but seems interesting.

  14. This release keeps getting better & better.

  15. i loved that song “knife” by them!

  16. Mmmmm… I smell nice vinyl packaging. Top notch as always, Droste, Rossen and Chrisx2.

And to Eli’s comment: I agree entirely, and nice to see some levelheaded, appreciative commenting.

    And fuck backlash.

  17. Perfection.
I’m so so excited. It’s all I want musically, for 2009, for the rest of the year.
I’m going to stop commenting because I couldnt really say anything to properly express the excitement.

  18. I don’t get it, I’m staring at it but it isn’t moving.

  19. i guess i’m the only person who feels dizzy when i look at their album cover. but i completely fall in love to their new songs.

  20. dollop  |   Posted on Feb 14th, 2009

Remember, what, five weeks ago when all anyone could talk about was the Animal Collective record? Then it came out? And people moved on to anticipating this? Man, I can’t wait until five weeks after 5/26. Indie rock is all about the foreplay, bro.

  21. liz lemon  |   Posted on Feb 14th, 2009

i want to go to there

  22. Christian  |   Posted on Feb 14th, 2009

seriously though, how do you pronounce it.

i don’t think it matters in the age of web 2.0, but i’d like to know…

  23. in response to all hate-responses directed towards my comment:

it’s amazing that a self-referential critique on the blogging world and the (admit it!) out-dated form of record promotion is met with such vitriol.

i love grizzly bear — their records, their live shows, their interactivity with fans. have loved ‘em since Horn of Plenty and am stoked about the new record.

ya know what i love more though?

a “NEGATIVE 41″ rating on my BLOG COMMENT.

CRANK UP THE FALL OUT BOY, BOYEEEES!!!!

    • Get a life.

    • LOL at them  |   Posted on Feb 15th, 2009

I understand where you’re coming from completely and loved the comment above. As for your detractors, they 1) take satirical criticism too seriously and 2) can’t think of a better counter-argument than to say “you suck” and press the down arrow. LOL at them. If I was in the band being defended, I’d probably support your opinion too.

      • jeff  |   Posted on Feb 15th, 2009

        LOL = BEN Z

        • LOL at you for being wrong  |   Posted on Feb 17th, 2009

LOL at you for being wrong. I have no clue who “BEN Z.” is but I like his/her style. You dorky blog commenters and your conspiracy theories. LOL at you. Grizzly Bear forbid two people have the same dissenting opinion.

    • ummmm  |   Posted on Feb 16th, 2009

      yeah.

      we got it.

everyone knows you were being sarcastic…it was just unfunny, unoriginal, and embarrassing. DOWN ARROW. MOVE ON.

  24. EliDManheim  |   Posted on Feb 14th, 2009

hifalutin album titles, playing alongside philharmonic orchestras … it’s all so spinal tap … it’s good, but it ain’t rock music anymore ….

    • what in god’s name are you talking about ? Spinal Tap ? learn a little a bit about the history of rock music before making such a statement… ever heard of The Beatles, Love, The Beach Boys, etc , etc

  25. this will OWN

  26. Grizzly Bear Street Team  |   Posted on Feb 15th, 2009

    Grizzly Bear are the best!

  27. what’s with the all pronunciation confusion? it’s pronounced PHONETICALLY.

  28. cannotwait  |   Posted on Feb 15th, 2009

    amazing.

  29. U Street Cardoza  |   Posted on Feb 16th, 2009

I am weird in that I like to go running to really listen to an album. It isn’t enough for me to just put it on and listen, I kind of have to lose myself in it. I just have to say that some of my best runs have been to Grizzly Bear albums. When Yellow House came out, I remember listening to it while running through some trails in Los Altos, Ca on a trip to visit a dying relative. I broke down crying around 8 miles into the run during Lullabye’s 2nd play. I have very high hopes for this one.

  30. Lonnie Pigford   |   Posted on Feb 17th, 2009

You know how video games had codes where you could get infinite life or infinite ammo? What I want is a code that will let me give infinite thumbs down to any comment praising Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, Panda Bear, Fozzie the Bear, or Smokey the Bear.

  31. righteous  |   Posted on Feb 17th, 2009

I do the same thing while riding my bike. It’s soothing and takes my mind away from everything else around me.

  32. Maybe the cover needs to grow on me because I find it underwhelming. Yellow House’s album art had so much mystery, this haunted aura. Perhaps it’s the atrocious word art as the color scheme itself is actually rather intriguing.

    • Its Beautiful  |   Posted on Feb 18th, 2009

The way the letters are stacked mimics the patterns in the drawing. It’s pretty beautiful how the slants of the letters, the spaces and the lines all reflect the drawing. It fits perfectly, very mesmerizing. And very iconic looking at the same time.

If this was the cover for YH, I’d agree it’s not fitting. But it’s not the cover for YH, it’s for a very different album entirely. And things about the YH cover wouldn’t probably work for this album.

      • It doesn’t matter what you say in response, I still don’t care for it. And obviously I wasn’t expecting a replica of the last cover because it’s a different album. But both Yellow House and Horn of Plenty have cool covers. The font is annoying because it’s broken into syllables. It would be much more appealing if it wasn’t divided up like that. LIKE I SAID, I like the color scheme, but the letter art is off-putting and unattractive. Either way, I’ve seen better, period. My story and I’m sticking to it.

        • you crazy  |   Posted on Feb 19th, 2009

The typography is creative, iconic looking and intriguing. Love the way the letters interact with the drawing. Way better than the HOP cover, and a lot more thoughtful than MANY covers we see on the market today. It’s clearly not just slapped on there. It’s thought out really well. I love it. Too bad you’re being so uptight about it.

          • It’s too bad I can’t be ENTITLED to my opinion without having a bunch of self-righteous detractors shoving burning shit down my throat. Give me negative scores if it gives you the ego boosts you all are seeking. I don’t care for the cover too much, too damn bad. That doesn’t mean I’m not open to hearing the album and anticipating its greatness. For goodness sakes, get over yourselves.

          • opinion  |   Posted on Feb 20th, 2009

well apparently some people have some opinions that are different than yours, chill out.

          • Exactly. So who really needs to chill? I would have had to get defensive had you all just accepted that my opinion is NOT YOURS and it doesn’t have to be. Leave it at that. Peace.

    • Haunting  |   Posted on Feb 18th, 2009

YH was haunting and mysterious, so it’s good that you feel like that cover had those qualities. This is a different album so the cover will have different qualities. You should wait to hear it, because you might see that it is equally just as fitting.

  33. Vince  |   Posted on Feb 18th, 2009

Sorry, very random question. I’m trying to remember who this artist is that was posted on here like a year ago and I can’t remember her name. It was this really hot chick in a band with two other guys. I remember the picture was black and white and she had dark hair and a black sweater on. I know someone remembers who I’m talking about. Her name started with an M i think. Help… It’s driving me crazy

  34. kurt  |   Posted on Feb 18th, 2009

just a note for everybody… please less “OMG”, “ZOMG”, “LOL” , etc. it’ll make the internet feel less like a retarded new millennium valley girl hangout.

and way less acronyms of band/album names.
stop making me feel guilty for liking some of these bands.

  35. beatrice  |   Posted on Feb 18th, 2009

It reminds me of old vintage jazz albums. Love it

  36. Peter  |   Posted on Feb 19th, 2009

Am I the only one that thinks it looks a bit like Blueberry Boat? Probably.

  37. muck9  |   Posted on Feb 19th, 2009

    what’s this thread about?

  38. dan   |   Posted on Feb 20th, 2009

i once saw ben tousley snort a line of anthrax and arm wrestle a saber tooth tiger

  39. this whole thread is the reason why i’m not going to get interested in this band

  40. oh, and of all the hipster douchebag hype, grizzly bear’s is the worst.

  41. yay, more longwinded hookless “baroque pop”

  42. wacky  |   Posted on Feb 21st, 2009
