If you didn’t hear from your message board or torrent tracking site of choice, you probably did from Ed Droste’s Twitter: Veckatimest leaked. If you know that, you probably know that Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold has already called it “the album of the 00s.” Far be it for us to be hyperbolic about Grizzly Bear, because when have we ever been hyperbolic about Grizzly Bear, but yeah … this album is a beast worthy of the obsessive listening we’re all engaging in across blog land. For it to defy expectations in the face of the ever heightening hype is cause for celebration, but there is that little issue of how this album wasn’t supposed to be released officially for like another three months. Naturally, Grizzly Bear is a little :( about it. So pause the repeat of “Ready, Able” for a minute and absorb the band’s statement in a blog post titled “There’s a hole in the bucket, Delilah”:
Hey all,
So yeah, we are kind of bummed this leaked so early. We know it’s not the 90′s anymore and times have changed, and we’re super grateful for all the support people have shown us on the blogs and internet, but we were kind of hoping it wouldn’t happen this soon.
Ultimately we feel like we put out a great album and hope people enjoy it, and we really hope people take the time to pre-order and support the good one-and-a-half years it took to write and record it.
I promise you the album art for both CD and vinyl is going to be gorgeous. And a bonus: all vinyl people will get a high quality download coupon with their purchase.
Leaking is a tricky subject; as we all know, I’ve had my run ins with the law O__o (Hi, Mr. Sheriff!) I have conflicting opinions about it, as it’s really complicated, but ultimately it saddens me that a bummer-quality version of Veckatimest is going around. Please consider putting your energies into a pre-order or into waiting till May 26 for the album the way we intend it to be presented.
Not to get all mushy, but we definitely put a lot of love and work into this one and are just excited to hit the road and tour it again.
Ok, there! Got that off my chest.
Warm regards.
All that comes via the Grizzly blog, which also has links to pre-order the album on CD and vinyl. This is a great album. It deserves a drop in the tip jar, and you deserve to own it on vinyl and with art work and all of that.
Veckatimest is out 5/26 via Warp. Also the band has just announced some tour dates, sans orchestra. You should still go though, they’re pretty good live.

Coolest album artwork in a few years.
No Line On The Horizon’s artwork > Veckatimest artwork
i can’t get out of what i’m into with you.
poor rip, good rip, this album is tops.
Just release it on iTunes ASAP and make the big bucks for an awesome album. I’ll pay for it.
as soon as i got word about the leak, that was it! i was totally unproductive the entire night! i was listening to grizzlebizzle alllll night AND THEN i was 2 + 1/2 hrs late to work today! thank you very much GrizB :/
woah, take it easy bud….
Anyways, hoorah tour dates! And hoorah album of the year! Amazing!
that ol robin guy is pretty smart.
Did I download it? perhaps. Am I sad that it leaked? OH yea. I was hoping this would be the one to elude the interwebs for a little while longer; gone is the anticipation of great albums.
at least its great!
well its certainly not album of the year….but its a good showing…i found myself a little disappointed on first few listens….but it is a beast…thats for sure
British Tour Dates??? WHEN?
Yeah, this album is insanely great. I’m really really pleasantly surprised by it. Definitely best thing of the year. Of the 00s, that’s just crazy and too soon to say!
yeah sorry robin but album of the 00s came out 7 years ago and its name is yankee hotel foxtrot….but i’ll save all that talk for our end of the decade discussions in december…. hooray for grizzly bear though, they made a great piece of entertainment and art, and will be up for best of the year
Aren’t they on Warp? So why not put it on bleep?
does anyone know if you get the high quality download sent to you once you order the vinyl or you have to wait until the release date??
it comes with a download card :)
add more please. michigan? lollapalooza, perhaps?
Ugh, these imposter posts are making me almost feel bad for liking these bands so much. Stop ruining music for me, you idiots.
Also, I couldn’t quite tell from the blog post, but is Ed saying that only those who pre-order the vinyl get a free download coupon? Because I will be crushed if that’s the case. I refuse to download the low-quality leak. I want to hear this thing for the first time as the band intended it…even if that means waiting the 3 months. :(
this album is GLORIOUS. maybe they could move up the vinyl date?
also, AMEX presale rules. my. face.
This post makes me sad. Happy that this band is putting out another great album. But sad that record labels can’t just coordinate their PR efforts and album press schedules to keep up with the inevitable leaks. Just release this album on Itunes at least, so that people who like this band can pay for the album now.
Who’s the asshole that leaked this to the internet. People that leak albums and prevent artists from getting paid properly for their hard work are right up there with the dude who sold out Michael Phelps’ bong photo to the press.
No likes rats or backstabbers. Support artists if you enjoy their work.
I think it’s like some friggin miracle that Brian raised from the dead and finally “finished” “Smile” but it’s the fevered, incomplete originals that still raise the fur…not being the 90′s anymore could mean so very many things…
Yeah, I waited until the release date to actually get Merriweather Post Pavilion and I’ll do the same for this. I’m curious to hear it, but there’s plenty of great stuff to listen to until May.
Namely; Wavves, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, M.Ward, Moz, that new Surf City EP, Crystal Antlers, Handsome Furs……
If it’s as good as people say it is, it doesn’t matter if it leaked or not, because people will still buy it.
I for one am totally for leaks, because bands these days take way too long to put out music. And then they draw it out forever once it’s announced, which is probably the label’s fault anyway. The point is, the music industry as it is now sucks and if artists took things into their own hands (ala Radiohead) then there would be less leaks, and more music. The End.
I don’t quite follow your logic. You think bands should be punished for taking too long to put out their own music. It’s their art. You and I are the consumer. If you are tired of waiting for a new album from a band you like, tough shit.
I agree labels tend to hold on too long before a release, but that is due to coordinating their press efforts and attempts to make the album a success. That obviously doesn’t work anymore because of leaks.
My problem with leaks for smaller label artists like this, is that it prevents them from presenting their hard work the way it was intended and reaping the financial benefits of doing so. Radiohead is a much larger band and can afford to play a different game.
The record industry is finished and is rebuilding in a good way- in the hands of the artists. Still, it’s their hard work and art, and whoever leaked it may like the band but clearly has no respect for their hard work or their livelihoods.
Grizzly what?
this album needs to make people say..
ANIMAL WHO?
for real.
it is really sad the way that the blogosphere has turned music into one big fucking competiton.
i was kidding. but also, you realize you just used the word blogopshere, right?
I think he was replying from his time machine.
amen, brother.
Collective. Animal Collective.
There is so much bullshit surrounding this album. People want soooo badly for it to be great… They’re not even talking about the songs! I think this speaks directly about our generation. We’ll be known as Gen ADD, and deservedly so. We should all get off our computers, wait until May 26th, then go outside, lie down under a tree and listen to Veckatimest. Actually, you can do what you want, but that’s what I’ll be doing.
I might actually NOT jump all over this leak. Sounds like it’ll be too good to waste on some badly mastered version
Yeah I respect the guys and can probably holding off on listening to this for a little while. Sometimes an album is released at a certain time in the year because the season fits it. Veckatemist seems like it’ll be a great springtime album and not one I’d enjoy with all the snow and cold weather outside.
Agreed. Warm, breezy spring day, listening to it for the 1st time ever, two days before seeing them at Town Hall…that’s how I roll.
Doesn’t the song go “…Dear Liza”?
Delilah never had a bucket and she never will.
These bros should’ve checked out songlyrics.geocities.com/soundparty/trad/@@3ijf94/dearliza.html before they wrote that entry.
did you just use a geocities cite as a reference? i mean, regardless of whether you’re right or wrong, that’s pretty 1997 of you…
I will sit on my hands and wait. sigh..
Simple answer: If you download it and love it, as it appears everyone does, buy a copy when it hits stores in May. If it’s Album Of The Decade, you’re going to want a copy for posterity’s sake anyway.
Or pretentiousness’s sake, depending on who you are.
I’m tired of the Ed Droste imposter, but I fucking was dying of laughter with the “bitch sit the back down” at natasha khan
STILL LAUGHING ABOUT IT.
pretty awesome.
Poor Bat For Lashes, it’s a good album but it’s no Veckatimest.
Favorites at the moment are All We Ask, Dory and About Face
Such an Epic piece of work. Can’t stop listening!
Where is the link to that thread?
Where is the chicago date?! Did i hear correctly that they are playing pitchfork fest again?
I’m with Robin on this one. This is the best thing I have heard during the 00′s. We’ll besides Sufjan (I guess)
sufjan does not hold even a little tiny candle to this. GB is operating on another level with this one.
I am a happy man right now. This album has me grinning from ear to ear. Best shit I’ve heard in ages. Unstoppable
Pleas don’t listen to the leak that is out right now. I heard it was bad quality and downloaded it to see, and it really is bad. It sounds like some shitty internet streaming version, really 8 bit sounding and un-clear. Just do a comparison of two weeks and knife and you can tell how poor quality this rip is. I deleted it immediately. I can’t wait to here this on vinyl.
The reason its so bad is because it looks like it was ripped into iTunes .m4a format and then leaked. I suppose if you’re going to listen to it on your iPod it’ll sound better than when you listen to it through your computer speakers.
What a CD!
The slower moments remind me a lot of the (old) Fleetwood Mac LP “Future Games”…it seems like that dreamy-narc guitar is making a comeback, which is good because it’s one of the Mac’s most overlooked CDs, along w/ “Then Play On” (both of which are better than all the nicks/buckingam stuff i think).
Yeah, this is the best thing of the year so far. Feel pretty confident saying it’s going to remain at the top throughout the year. It’s just too good.
I preordered the vinyl last week. I don’t feel bad for downloading it because yeah the quality might be bad, but now I’ve actually heard the album and I’m still really damn excited for the perfect quality of it and the new art and packaging Ed keeps talking about. It’s a win win, or a wayne wayne. God damn it that was an awful joke.
It put a smile on my face, so there’s that.
To be honest, most people in this thread were in love with this album before it even came out. The indie cred hype machine seems to have gone to insane levels lately, with people going crazy over how Animal Collective, and now Grizzly Bear have made one of the greatest albums ever, proclaimed weeks if not days after their release. Don’t get me wrong, i’m liking the album, but im not sitting in awe or taken in by its beauty. the best way for me to put it is that the album just seems uneventful. its like someone whispering over the hum of a machine of some sort. Two Weeks breaks that mold, but the rest is a little “zzzzzz” worthy.
But, i dont like to jump to conclusions, this album could be one to grow on me.
They are doing something different. Songs have both a proggy and poppy appeal. It all manages to seem fresh and exciting, and yet retain a gorgeous and poppy appeal. Not going to say “best of anything” YET, but deep in my deeps I know this is a fucking masterpiece of an album. If you can’t see that, you just aren’t a fan and it’s OK, but this is really really really good.
when music is free on the internet its easy to just keep downloading and listening to everything instead of spending time with an album. I’m not a nostalgic person, its not a bad thing. However, its something we are all going to have to learnb to live with.
Classic album doesnt mean what it used to. Its all about that instant high. People don’t need more than a few weeks to know thats its the flavor of the month.
All of this, from the blogger seeded hype, through this site particularly, to the three-month early leak to this Grizzly Bear blog should go down as the best marketing/PR stint since In Rainbows. Maybe even better. Hat’s off, Grizzly Bear.
Agreed. Grizzly Bear have nothing to lose and everything to gain from this leaking early. Anyone who was just going to download the cd instead of buying it would have just downloaded it after the release date. I think all indie albums are released early…the have no other marketing alternative. Garnering buzz on the interweb through sites like this is what sells indie albums.
he sounds like a nice fellow from that post. good on him.
even though i don’t play music, i don’t even know about music stuffs. i do prefer Grizzly Bear to Animal Collective. end of story.
eagerly awaiting the first two weeks mash-up, epic potential.
Brookstone should start making a setting on their sleep machines called “Grizzly Bear” because their albums put me to sleep.
what a zinger!!!
No Line On The Horizon > Veckatimest
So wrong , oh soooo wrong.
No one ever comes to STL.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9cPcKa0oCI&feature=channel
Two Weeks is already up!
has anyone made a joke about geologist leaking it or anything yet?
Or a Win Win
The thing is, the business needs to change. May 26th?? That’s madness. Even if the album wasn’t leaked in its entirety, by the end of May, anyone who wants to hear some/most of it will have that chance. Plus, RS, Spin, Pitchfork and the blogs will have reviewed it to death by the middle of April. Who will care at the end of May? It’s so frustrating to want to do the right thing and purchase cd’s when you go into a record store after reading a review and it’s not going to be there for weeks or in this case, months!
It’s not the band’s fault that a previously defined release date got fucked over by the fact that it leaked a little over a WEEK after they finished mixing it, (which, seriously, blows my mind).
Mind you, it’s going to suck waiting two months, but after the MPP leak ruined it for me, I’m going to adhere to it. It’ll remind me of being in the seventh grade again, waiting and waiting until a certain Tuesday to get a record I’d been looking forward to. It’ll be nice.
After all the hype, the unbearable anticipation (built by “Two Weeks”, “While You Wait for the Others” and the entire BAM performance), the naysayers, the fanboys, and finally, the THREE-MONTH-EARLY leak (of course I listened to it!), I still can’t f*cking wait to get this album.
I listened to it twice and now im planning on not listening to it again until i get my pre-order, but i dont know if i can wait two and a half more months…
Ed seems like a super nice guy and makes me want to support the artists even more. This record definitely deserves to make them lots of money.
One thing though, I was thinking how, despite the recent re-emergence of vinyl appreciation, most people listen to music in a digital form, on their computers or ipods, am I right? So as someone else mentioned, why not release it digitally if the mastering has been done so people can get a chance to show their support and appreciation?
Also, about the quality of leak, I’m not sure what you people are listening to or if that’s just some sort of anti-piracy propaganda, but my copy sounds pretty good…even on high volume… And I’m pretty sure I can still tell a quality download from a crappy one…:\
i really don’t feel anything at all when i listen to grizzly bear. i thought that “while you wait for the others” was a really pretty track, so i grabbed this album, but it has proven to have much the same effect on me as their other releases. then again, i also don’t like animal collective, so i have begun to think i simply enjoy being reviled.
99% of original sources for these leaks are someone high up on the chain of command in either the recording studio / distribution channels / etc that gets a copy of it. it then gets dispersed to everyone else via scene groups and p2p/torrent sites. who knows. labels could even be leaking albums early as a marketing tactic without your knowledge. stranger things have happened.
also, keep in mind that just because an album leaks, doesn’t mean that all the people that are downloading it are going to have that as their only copy. it is true AND common that downloaders either:
1) wouldn’t have bought it anyway. downloaded copies does not equal lost sales.
2) are getting their hands on the leak because it is easily available and are still pre-ordering it or will buy it when it is released.
certainly there are those that will download the album who possibly would have paid for it – but i believe the number of THAT type of pirate/downloader is grossly exaggerated.
Veckatimest = Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young meet Pink Floyd tripping on acid watching Edward Scissor Hands.
Veckatmist = Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young meet Pink Floyd tripping on acid and watching Edward Scissor Hands
wtfplz
Please calm down!
i agree, there’s a big sad aspect to it. it’s all good, because it’s an incredible record and i think it’ll withstand the issue, but i’d love to start seeing the labels take more action. and less backstabbers leaking things ruthlessly.
i think that lots of people who downloading the leak are still going to support the band…with tickets to shows and the vinyl release.
