The Breeders-esque vocalisms and ’90s alterna sound of Brian Aubert and his Silversun Pickups came through clearly on Swoon single “Panic Switch.” This new video for the track wasn’t directed by Joaquin Phoenix; instead, the Pickups asked James Frost, who also did Radiohead’s Gummy winning, 3-D plotted “House of Cards,” to work his magic. No offense to Phoenix, but he’s not a director. So this was a smart move — even if it causes a few seizures.

Swoon is out 4/13 via Dangerbird.

  1. i’m really liking this. solid groove, good bridges and chorus, and the guitar solo alongside an exciting outro make for an exciting track. great sense of urgency. looking forward to this.

  2. The new album is actually decent. I know they aren’t reinventing the wheel, but at this point, they’re the closest thing to a 90s-era Smashing Pumpkins reunion you could ask for. I’ll take it.

Music isn’t bad, need a new singer ASAP.

They most definitely do *not* need a new singer. Brian’s unique voice is a key part of their appeal, at least for me. I have to laugh at all the fools saying ridiculous things like “I thought that was a girl singing until I saw the video”; what female singer sounds like that? None that I know of.

    • ‘what female singer sounds like that? none that I know of.’ try Band of Susans for one. Oh wait, your musical knowledge goes only back to 2002…idiot.

rk, i have to agree with d on this one. he sounds quite feminine. I know a guy who sings almost exactly like this, but had i not known him i would hardly believe it. Band of Susans is one example, but how about Tracey Chapman, shes a girl and her voice sounds manly in comparison to this dudes.

what female singer sounds like this, – shirley manson, very much so, the music is not dissimilar to pumkins, but when i first heard this song i thought garbage had come out with new material
and no this does noy sound like the breeders. i dont know much about band of susans though

its good to hear a chugging baseline again….

  6. Ok, no more “Breeders-esque” talk from you, ‘Gum.

P.S. This track is fucking hot.

who cares if he “spounds like a girl or a boy”? that is unimportant when the sound of the voice and sound of drums and sound bass combine so well to make a great sound. girl, boy, girl/boy…who cares?

    instant classic…awesome video

  9. I didn’t dig Swoon nearly as much as Carnavas, but it’s still an extremely solid collection of songs, so I’ll be totally picking this one up (as well as scanning the local venues for any announcements).

(For mass-holes, Newbury Comics is carrying Swoon for 7.99 next week.)

    • Hey dude, thanks for the heads up on the Newbury Comics price. I almost pre-ordered it from Best Buy for the same price, but eff them.

Thanks for the heads up. Its a shame they’ve had to modify their business plan so much to include novelty items, but newbury comics is still a great store and we’re lucky to have it. Really looking forward to this album.

    Sick…Love the Riffs…The Voice…The Chick…Album is Classic…..Just Like The First……..”Sort Of” Is Me Sheiiet!

  11. Somebody had a blast editing this video. I’m diggin the transparent blue drums, and the song was pretty decent too.

  12. Quietly anticipating this.

Seriously, this is the second article about this song to reference “Breeders-esque”. What the hell are you talking about? I don’t even know if it’s supposed to be an insult or a compliment (better be the latter, Kim Deal is untouchable). I’ve listened to the Breeders a lot and I’m struggling to make the connection.

If Swoon sounds like anything (beyond the oh-so-tired Pumpkins references.. the guy can’t help his voice) it’s Split-era Lush.

Personally, I’m in. It’s a great record with some killer hooks and depth, if you’re into the kind of thing that it is. I am.

The drummer has a funny drum setup. Why does he keep that cymbal that high?

How could this gnarly drumset come off as funny to you? I have recently started playing this on my drumset and so far is the most enjoyable song I have played.

This song sucks. Get a new lead singer.
