While Jack and Alison were showing Bowery just how comfortable they were singing into the same mic, Annie Clark performed her own intimate set across town at the 92Y space in Tribeca. It was an invite-only show, although a last minute notice to her mailing list subscribers ensured it wasn’t just an industry drag. The roughly one-hour set focused on the prematurely evaluated Actor LP with a side of Marry Me crowd pleasers (“Jesus Saves, I Spend,” “Marry Me,” etc.). Annie went solo for most of it, calling out a sax/clarinet man for a couple (including “Marry” and a set-closing, acoustic guitar take on “The Party”). Of course her “Actor Out Of Work” got some stage time and good applause, Clark noting that a recent crowd in Los Angeles gave it an overall sigh. NYC is good like that, Annie. I was at the Hollywood Forever show. There were definite sighs around the room. That is not a made up story. Also, you walk a dangerous analytical line when you start manipulating aesthetics in a vacuum and to paraphrase the “2nose” commenter, just stop already.
