After taking Brooklyn and Manhattan, Phoenix took off to the West coast to do Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix standard “Lisztomania” on Jimmy Kimmel. It’s a mostly spirited performance, Thomas Hedlund hitting the drums much harder than he needs to, to great effect. As the above thumb might suggest, though, Thomas Mars looks a tad more out of it than usual. He had an excuse: The guy’s sick. In fact, the Frenchmen had to cancel this Saturday’s performance at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco because of it. Watch the show, then read Phoenix’s sick note.
Via We Are Phoenix:
We’re very sorry but we have had to pull out of tonight’s performance at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco.
We are absolutely mortified to have to let you all down but Thomas is unable to sing tonight due to the effects of a viral illness he has contracted. We’re extremely concerned about those of you that bought advance tickets and we will find a way to make sure you can either be refunded or have them swapped for our next SF date in September, which will be announced soon. Please contact your point of purchase for details.
Again, we’re very sorry but there is unfortunately no way for Thomas to do the show and we’d like to thanks you in advance for your understanding.
June 29th update
We’re still working out the details of how to sort out those of you that bought tickets in advance for the show. Since it was a Festival rather than our own headline show it makes it a little more complicated. We can assure you however that we promise to honour all advance tickets by either swapping them or refunding. Please give us a little time and well let you know ASAP. Thanks for your patience.
No problem. Otherwise, the tour’s continuing.

If they want to go ahead and schedule a San Diego date while they’re at it, that would be lovely.
Seriously he gets sick while singing regular pop tunes? I can’t believe anybody could get sick by singing such easy songs.
maybe if the guy didn’t wear the same shirt every single day, he wouldn’t catch germs??
I agree. What’s up with the same outfit for every show when clearly every other band member has no problem changing it up?
wow. this sounds better than the recording. i love this band!
it sounds like he is singing along with a backing track. why does his voice sound doubled if its just one person singing?
I think either that’s some kind of layering effect on the mic or they used the backing track to make it sound more like it does on the record, with two voices singing.
Anyways, I still think they did an excellent job despite the fact that he was sick. Phoenix is a fantastic band live.
He could just be using a mic pre-amp or similar effect to beef up his voice. Plenty of singers use this. It’s still dependent on you actually sounding good in the first place, so it’s not like this is the same as using a backing track.
I love this band but it does sound like there is another voice track playing. though it is just probably because he was feeling sick
Their show at the Wiltern last night was fucking awesome. People were seriously losing their shit. Great crowd, great band, perfect evening.
It’s a chorus effect, it knocks the vocal out to sound like 2 or more stream, slightly modulates the other and detunes it a tad.
Cool it.
I have no clue what they are saying half the time but I love these guys.
poor guy.
He did the same thing on SNL. It is the vocal track playing as well as him doing a live take. On the album his vocals are all double tracked so this is him basically doing the same thing live.
i love Phoenix and i think they’re doing a great job. THE ONLY THING that futzes me up is that weird-ass fakey white Telecaster dude plays… I HATE ITS SHAPE !!@(*($&Q3omgZwtfBBQ
