A continually powerful live performer, Jesy Fortino, aka Tiny Vipers, recently turned in a moving, damn-near incantatory rendition of Life On Earth standout “Dreamer” in the somber, light-strewn KEXP studios. In fact, Fortino’s so focused on the song and its words and associations that it’s a genuine trance-breaking downer when the DJ shows up at the end to congratulate her. One of the things that makes Fortino’s work so great: Each times she shows up, it’s an exorcism.

Life On Earth is out via Sub Pop. Take another listen to “Development.”

I love this record, and Dreamer is such a great song. Most of this sort of thing that Sub-Pop does is pretty bland but Tiny Vipers is so good it almost makes up for all that.

  2. Oh my goodness, this is beautiful. I have a crush on Jesse.

  3. UGH KEXP use a tripod.

She reminds me of Tanita Tikaram, who also has such a unpretentious singing voice.

  5. njoy: in my defense, this video was a “quick” one to get session to the people, uh, quickly. Here’s the “real” video, though for “Development”:
