The all-star roots troupe of Conor Oberst, Jim James, M. Ward, and Mike Mogis finally let us sample their Monsters Of Folk project with the not very folky “Say Please” the other day. The self-titled LP is due 9/22 via Shangri-La music, which is good news that gets better with today’s announcement that the crew will convene for a fall tour through North America and Europe. The press release promises the quartet “will be switching instruments and trading roles throughout each show,” and that $1 from each ticket sold will benefit Air Traffic Control, “a resource for musicians’ philanthropic and social change work.” That’s nice. 1. REDNECK RAMPAGE
these guys make me feel ashamed that I am American

  2. HIGHLY AUSPICIOUS.

please not the redneck thing again. say please was very disappointing. hope the rest of the record is a little more exciting.

  4. Umm, who’s the audience really?

  5. name  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

I liked say please and would go see them if htey’d come to tx.

    • chewy  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

that song is so mediocre! you don’t have to like it just because of the big names. you being from texas and liking this is gonna make it too easy to fuel the redneck fire

      • astro  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

        oh, shut the fuck up.

        • chewy  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

hahah i am against the redneck bs i was just saying he was making it easy for those people. sorry you’re probably from houston seeing your name is astro, i was hoping it was a jetson’s reference

          • astro  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

yeah, and you must be from kashyyyk. for the record, i found all three of the statements in your first post disagreeable.

it’s really easy (i guess) to forget that austin is not only in texas but, moreover, the capital of it, or that, say, all of the major cities in texas voted for obama in november. yes, there are a lot of hicks and/or assholes in this state, but no, they would never listen to monsters of folk.

          • chewy  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

hahahaha kashyyyk. well played. i actually just had the granola bar and looked at the wrapper before i posted. just for the record i am still against every redneck accusation, i think they’re funny/ridiculous. esp when made towards wilco fans. “say please” is still a disappointment for me , i think they played it safe and with all of their talent they could’ve been much more adventurous. sorry to hurt your state’s feelings. feel free to bash on MA

  6. jack  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

redneck? where the fuck do you people come from? i’m definitely going to see this.

    Preach on Jesus!

  10. twin cities gal  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

Most good songs are about girls and the midwest not williamsburg

  11. Nick Dick  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

Wow, midwest represent! LOL btw, conor has been making some questionable style choices as of late.

  12. Yim Yames  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

  13. Williamsburg Will  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

  14. kozy  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

Am I the only one that finds the band’s name to be quite pretentious?

  15. name  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

  16. margotsaysyes  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

The intellectual value of the comments on this page is staggering! Blanket stereotypical insults ftw!

  17. PopquizKid  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

I think they should have called themselves The Traveling Hillbillies… no this record should be great… i like say please

  18. eric w  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

I am so excited for this album.

Most good music comes from rednecks anyhow

  19. Hmmm  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

This thread is filled with assholes. I am so looking forward to this album, it may be the best of the year.

  20. lostbikes  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

Don’t take the hostile comments here too seriously. They just come from being confronted by a band that can actually play their instruments well and write honest-to-god rock songs. And all these guys do those things extremely well.

  21. Here we go again.. It’s just music guys, if you don’t like them well then don’t listen to them. But if you feel the need to insult people because of who they listen to or where they’re from, then start a blog of your own about it and let us know how that works out for you.

It seems like people love to argue about bands they believe to be better than others, people’s feelings get hurt, and then some of you feel the need to get back at each other by bashing somebody else’s favorite band. Everybody is entitled to their opinion but taking shit personally makes most of you seem like fourteen year-old dweebs begging for attention.

Sorry for stating the obvious but some people here need to grow up. Except for those of you who are actually 14 years-old of course.

  22. Daneyk  |   Posted on Jul 23rd, 2009

    The Midwest is Best.

  23. Cory  |   Posted on Jul 24th, 2009

  24. Peter  |   Posted on Jul 24th, 2009

    fuck

  25. LOUD NOISES!

    I DON’T KNOW WHAT WE’RE YELLING ABOUT!

  26. Lyla  |   Posted on Jul 24th, 2009

what’s all the yelling about? Can’t we all just get along?

Conor is still the hottest man in idie rock, he is so fucking gorgeous!

  27. Probey  |   Posted on Jul 24th, 2009

    Jim James> Yim Yames

  28. uglyfuckling  |   Posted on Jul 24th, 2009

whats so cool about debating whether a band is great or not, who the fuck cares!! its fucking music! some will like it some will not…..if you’re posting that you’re sweet because you’re from nyc and that some dude from texas doesnt understand whats good is idiotic and childish….. go play with some wooden blocks and have your mom go over your addition flash cards for a lil while longer. maybe you all can grow up again.

  29. stuff all you guys

  30. I like these guys and the pains of being pure at heart. i’m from england though, maybe if i lived in nyc i would have a different opinion…you tossers

  31. Jane  |   Posted on Jul 24th, 2009

what’s with all the redneck stuff? It sounds like a lost track by George Harrison.

  32. Jason  |   Posted on Jul 24th, 2009

no sneakers allowed in this band

  33. Lane  |   Posted on Jul 25th, 2009

This shits good, im from tx, im not a redneck, neither is the band…

But seriously what were you expecting them to put out?… epic folk?
Its a good song doesnt have to be great for me to like the band, if you wanna talk about mediocre look at the recent solo thom yorke stuff… (watch my score drop because of that last one haha)

  34. katie  |   Posted on Jul 26th, 2009

hey, at least conor isn’t writing songs for twilight. and i love “say please” a lot and i live in the northeast.

  35. The song is great….the band name is tongue-in-cheek…as one previous poster commented, grow the hell up.

  36. Jack  |   Posted on Jul 28th, 2009

This TX redneck can’t wait for the album

  37. fuckthebs  |   Posted on Jul 29th, 2009

people, this is not a regional thing. The midwest isn’t the best. Nyc isn’t the birthplace of cool.

Chill out, smoke something and listen to some good music. fucking be thankful that you aren’t stuck in a circular room in a straight jacket with coldplay playing 24/7.

    really.

  38. tickets to this are $47 in omaha fuck that

  39. no montreal?? fuck THAT.

  40. Atlien  |   Posted on Jul 30th, 2009

  41. hmm monsters of FOLK are coming no where near me in the southern Appalachians, leaving out the entire south, doesn’t make much sense. Guess I’m driving up to KY.
