We don’t have an exact release date, but Devendra’s new label, Warner/Reprise, sent out a stream of What Will We Be a couple days ago, so we do have the track list. We also know Banhart’s sixth album runs for 50:31 and were told “the stuff sounds wicket good…” (Thanks for the tip, Lars.) The 14-track collection follows 2007′s Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon and was co-produced by DB and Band Of Bees’ Paul Butler. Banhart’s backed by Smokey mates Noah Georgeson, Megapuss Greg Rogove on drums, bassist Luckey Remington and guitarist Rodrigo Amarante on it. No word on whether or not Andy Cabic’s also inhaling any of Dev’s fumes. Take a look at the album art while you ponder the song titles.
01 “Can’t Help”
02 “Angelika”
03 “Baby”
04 “Goin’ Back To The Place”
05 “First Song For B”
06 “Last Song For B”
07 “Chin Chin & Muck Muck”
08 “16th & Valencia”
09 “Rats”
10 “Maria Leonza”
11 “Brindo”
12 “Meet Me At The Lookout”
13 “Wiliamdzi”
14 “Foolin’”
If you recall, we’ve heard live versions of “Chin Chin & Muck Muck” and “Baby.” Maria Leonza gets a song, but not Natalie?
What Will We Be is out this fall via Warner/Reprise.

I am ridiculously excited about this news!
is it cool to like freak folk again? In all seriousness, I’m excited to download this from megadownload when it comes out.
yo, “all shook up”…thats the worst thing ever….download it?!? you are not worthy. and whats not cool is caring about whats cool. don’t even bother man.
16th and Valencia is bad-ass folks.
Peace.
I wonder if any of this tracks are about natalie…i wonder..
16th and valencia
been there done that
this should be a good record. here is to hoping that andy cabic was involved; anything that man touches turns to gold.
rats!!!!!!
Stinky hippie.
Bigger distribution for his most accessible work to date – Devendra has always been pop – posturing and scene hopping – orchestrating his career in a deft fashion. Well played man – Looking forward to hearing dude on the radio along side Nickleback. That’s what he always wanted – don’t be fooled.
16th & Valencia – that’s very 1991.
SELLOUT!
Warner =Satan We still have fleet foxes and band of horses evil will not win out
this guy lost it.
dates natalie portman (props, but where the hell did it come from)
then he shaves his beard (after he has songs written about how even his childrens’ hair is gonna grow long)
then he signs to warner.
he’s corny and fake and 95% of the shit he writes sucks. he tries harder than weird al to stand out as the odd, quirky, cutesy guy. LAAAAAAAME.
Yeah, he signed to the same label as Flaming Lips and Built to Spill… what a sellout!!
I almost REALLY like that cover art…if somebody told me that was Beck’s next album I’d want to hear it…
I think Devendra deverses some kind of award for the speed at which he managed to go from ‘interesting up and coming intense folkie mystic type’ circa 2002-2004 to ‘jaded huckster peddling a load of hippie comedy and corny genre knock-offs’.. I think there’s still some spark of talent in there but he could do with getting back in touch with his earnest side and getting himself an editor this time, seeing as every record since ‘Nino Rojo’ has been 15-20 minutes too long.
Does anyone know where this record was recorded? I heard in a tiny town in Northern California – Is that true?
PS it is always cool to like freak folk!
