It seems Daniel Johnston’s going for a hi-fi sound on the forthcoming Is and Always Was, the legendary (and at one-time solitary) songwriter/artist’s first proper collection in six years. Shifting things up, Johnston worked closely with Beck/Brendan Benson/Eric Matthews/Paul McCartney/etc collaborator and former Jellyfish member Jason Falkner on the 11 tracks. Falkner also produced. You can get a taste of the fuller sound on “Freedom.” There are backups, slide guitar, well-oiled drums and the like, but his voice/lyrics remain the focal point. Anyway, fans of those early, affecting bedroom recordings shouldn’t fret: The ostensible album art is bare bones (sorry).

This guy RULES. I realize there will be posts following this saying otherwise, but for a manic musician he’s the most brutally honest heart on his sleeve guy out there. Just sayin’.

can’t wait for the show
umm. hasn’t Daniel Johnston been “going for a hi-fi sound” for the last 15 years or so? this is not a new turn of events
Daniel Johnston power-pop?
just saw him at the blind pig in ann arbor. he was amazing and the crowd loved him. he did a set of his earlier songs (alone) and some new material with a band. both were great!
Hell yeah…give me some Danny Johnston power-pop! It’s about the song and about the words. Some folks get it, some don’t. Me…I’m looking forward to checking out the whole album. (Big Falkener fan too!)
