best-pavement-reunion.jpg

We gave you some information and our assurances on the Pavement reunion yesterday, but there were still plenty of skeptics. Well, here goes: The band is, in fact, reuniting for a one-time-only tour in 2010. The lineup for the tour is Mark Ibold, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich, and Steve West, which means Gary Young’s hanging out at home. Matador notes: “Please be advised this tour is not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion.” As we mentioned, the first show takes place in NYC on 9/21/10 at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. Yes, 2010, but a pre-sale begins tomorrow (9/18) at 10AM EDT. We have more details on that via Matador, along with a couple of vintage MP3s to get you in the mood.

A pre-sale begins at 10:00 AM EDT on Friday, September 18, 2009 (tomorrow). The password for the pre-sale is ZOWEE . The general on-sale is slated for 10:00 AM EDT on Friday, September 25, 2009. Please note that tickets will be available without surcharges from the Nokia Theatre box office in Times Square and from Earwax at 218 Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg.

This is the ticketing link. You can read more at Matablog and should check out crookedrain.com for current/future details. As far as the past, here are a couple of flashbacks. (Speaking of the past: Anti-Pavement naysayers likely didn’t have ears in the early/mid ’90s. The band’s success/popularity had nothing to do with websites. Nobody had any when they hit.)

Here’s “Heckler Spray/In The Mouth A Desert” live 1994. Treat it like an oil well.

In an interview with RS, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg says, “We’ll do some rehearsing in the new year. The Central Park shows, we’ll probably end up doing one or two of those. There’s festivals and stuff that we’re talking to, like Coachella. After that, anything that happens in the future is in the future.”

Matador also notes that there’ll be a “details-to-be-determined compilation album planned for release sometime in 2010.”

If I hear one more Kanye interrupting something joke, I am gonna blow my brains out. And no, I don’t want to hear about some other suicide being the best suicide of all time. He interrupts things. I get it.

Alright, so is the pre-sale tomorrow for Central Park only? Or for the whole tour?

A year away? This must be some kind of record. Are these guys in some kind of trouble and need money or are they trying to see if many people even care to see them? I sat down last night and listened to their 1st 3 cd’s and a couple of live shows I have. I then decided I could care less. Yeah they were cool back in the day but now? Maybe the day of the show if I can get a cheap ticket.

“Yeah they were cool back in the day but now?” Seriously: fuck you. The internet has seemingly bred an entire generation of high bitrate brats who are so interested in moving onto the next big thing that they feel it necessary to leave a continual ass trail of “that band is so yesterday” diarrhea.

this band is so yesterday, today, and a bit of tomorrow…I’m pretty excited.
hopefully, no one chucks a mud-covered rock at SM’s chest…

  8. Nobody gives a f*ck if you don’t like Pavement. Pavement > Animal Collective

Why do people hate? Pavement perpetuated themselves in a time long before “the internet” and gained popularity/success based upon actual word of mouth and the fact that at the time, they put out some of the best, original music. There are VERY few bands I would ever stick up for, in fact, I think this may be the first time I’ve ever “posted a comment” in a public forum, ever. “So suck on that, white stains.” (sorry, just watched the season premire of Its Always Sunny).

?I sat down last night and listened to their 1st 3 CD’s and a couple of live shows I have. I then decided I could care less?

translated: ?I downloaded their first three albums off a torrent, listened to thirty seconds of ?Summer Babe?, and I now believe I have a sufficiently all-encompassing knowledge of every facet of their music to be able to make ridiculous comments like this?.

oh, and getting a paper cut on my eyeball > Animal Collective.

  11. It’s going to be a while before the Kanye West meme gets old, huh?

    haha, quality thread.

    Just for the record; Pavement=awesome.

To people who could care less: I could care less. That leaves more tickets for people with taste.

I must be getting old though – it doesn’t seem like 10 years since Pavement split up! But that could be because we’ve had the also awesome SM & Jicks to tide us over.
