i thought music was universal…bridges a gap? people can take a song for what it means to them, personally/emotionally and express themselves freely with it. that’s the gift of an artist or artists. no one is allowed that anymore?
You miss the point (or didn’t listen to the audio). Beck, as is his wont, was making Muse out to be ideologically aligned with him.
If he had discussed the band purely on musical terms, I’m sure it wouldn’t have been so much of a problem, but Beck has to make everything political, offending the band by suggesting they agree with his brand of crazy.
i understand your point, michael, but the Muse song itself is overtly political. Beck didn’t specifically say the band had anything towards agreeing with “his brand of crazy”. He stated they are Libertarians, explained the structure and lyrics of the song…his sound manager who became very familiar with the band was the one suggesting that Beck sounded alot like Muse. Beck’s specific reference was that the expression and lyrics of the song parallels with the book 1984.

Yeah, “Keith” sounds all genius-like and stuff. These libkids can rarely articulate any sort of intelligent discourse – there just aren’t enough bumper stickers out there to assist them when the debate gets tough – or even, elementary. Beck’s comments on the concepts MUSE include in their music are completely accurate – anyone can see, that lyrically, that’s exactly what’s going on. Saying they’re ahead of their time, great musicians, etc. is an awesome endorsement to, what is it now? about 3 million listeners everyday?! Their “representative” definitely didn’t do them any favors with that fax/e-mail/call. They probably stood to sell anywhere from 10k to 150k more albums just from this single endorsement. You can’t buy that kind of advertising. What morons. They’ll regret that down the road.
The fact that we’re arguing the merits of anything Glenn Beck says is ridiculous. Beck doesn’t articulate intelligent discourse; he tosses off mostly crazy conspiracy theories like all art in Rockefeller Center being fascist and/or socialist. He’s either batshit crazy or he’s an even better parody of the conservative pundit than Stephen Colbert. It’s quite possible he could be both.
Additionally, no one seems to realize that Muse isn’t serious with most of their lyrics and performance? The sci-fi totalitarian shtick is mostly kitsch. The over-the-top Queen-aping to add to the pomp and seriousness adds to it.
The problem here is that Beck is attracted to it in the same way an earnest 15 year old is; he takes everything he’s hearing literally, not recognizing the intended humor in a lot of it. He’s like an angry teenager that just discovered Rage Against the Machine. He’s pissed off and frustrated but doesn’t have an outlet for it, and probably isn’t even entirely sure what he’s angry at. Suddenly, he hears this rage-filled firebrand articulating anger at fairly vague groups: inept government, racist white people, and so on. So the kid suddenly believes all of this and becomes political transforming into a douchebag left-wing nutcase.
Fortunately, most kids grow out of that phase because they’re angry due to the hormonal imbalance of being a teenager. Beck is a 40-something grown man, attaching himself to a rock band that makes semi-ironic references to Orwell because he’s a step or two away from being Howard Beale. He’s mad as hell and he only has a vague clue as to why. And it usually involves Obama in devil horns gobbling up people in his sharp fangs so he can further his agenda of socializing the end of the world.
Probably why Muse wants to disassociate themselves from him. Only two groups of people follow Beck regularly enough to hear the endorsement: crazies that wanna tear apart every last word he says or crazies that wanna hang off every last word he says. I wouldn’t want either of those two groups showing up at my concerts if I was a band.
It’s no wonder our country is in the shape it’s in, when common sense isn’t so common anymore. What happened to using/sharing reasonable discussion with logic about each topic presented, to discover what is based upon factual truth and what’s been fabricated? No need for slighting one another with language intended to slam anothers opinions, instead of presenting sound and balanced connecting of the dots to show what is or isn’t a truism.
Are you serious? don’t you guys know when you are being put on? Beck always slams himself like that. It was a joke. Do you really think muse representatives were sitting around listening to Beck to see if he would mention the band so that they could demand a retraction. Do you think they could get an email to Beck with in minute of his mentioning the group?
If you don’t believe what Glenn Beck says, why don’t you do some research and find out for yourself? It is easy to do. Or do you even know how to do research. I did some, as I wanted to be sure Beck was telling it like it is. HE IS. DO THE RESEARCH.
