We’ve been through this already, but it bears repeating because it keeps happening: In 2009 Iggy Pop somehow became the king of oddball duets (often with younger ladies). He’s also the best part of this campy video for Jemina Pearl’s Break It Up lead “I Hate People” even though he doesn’t physically show up for the shoot. The clip — situated in a very hip diner employing both a nervous, bespeckled Thurston Moore and a burnt-out Pearl — follows a she-works-hard-for-the-money storyline to its conclusion. Jemina can take it from there.

The Jemina album is pretty good. Nothing groundbreaking, but it has more fine moments than mediocre ones. I don’t understand why there’s really been no buzz about it actually being released, though? I just realized it came out last week, haven’t seen any promos for it aside from blog posts like these and I would have expected Ryan Schreiber to ejaculate out a review the day after it came out where the word “promising” is used about 12 times and finally gives it a 7.1
I agree. The album is actually pretty good, and it sucks no one is talking about it. Jemina can’t really do anything wrong, she is such an indie cutie! :)

Terrible terrible terrible. A shame two old dudes like Thurston and Iggy care to back up something so dull. More mediocre verse-chorus-verse-chorus music from the “indie pop” treadmill is just what I don’t need. Hope the rest of her album is a bit more daring!

Would anybody listen to this for fun? The video is one thing, but the song alone blows and so did Be Your Own Pet.
God, this sucks. Retro pop kitsch + post-everything cynicism. How obvious and predictable. Very boring. I can not imagine writing, practicing and recording this song and then making a video for it all without realizing the many ways in which it sucks.

It’s too bad that people forget that being a critic doesn’t mean you’re negative about everything. These comments do more to make their writers seem like jerks than to tear down the song.

I actually really love this song. I agree she is trying too hard to capture the snotty badassness of Be Your Own Pet but at least she gets it somewhat right. Her vocals are kinda annoying but this video is funny and cute (I knoew for someone that John would walk into the diner). Very campy and pretentious but who isnt doing that these days. She just needs time to find her musical footing.
And of course Iggy has a “youth fetish”. He dueted with Peaches (which was awesome), Ida Maria (which sucked) and dated Sable Starr back in the day (she had green pubes?).

i like how people complain about songs like every song they hear is suppose to be some kind of religious experience. I’m sure when she was writing this song she didnt sit down and go”Oh man this song is going to be my Stairway to Heaven”. The people that complain are probably the same people that go to concerts and watch with their arms crossed and take into account every little thing (my god what are they wearing, that solo was off a note, the timing is all wrong on this song etc.)
