On “Mild Confusion” downcast San Francisco/New York group Tamaryn make like Siouxie Sioux singing over a heavily warped, all-consuming Dead Can Dance (or non-warped My Bloody Valentine) backing track. The quartet stick to the dark, thickly atmospheric feel across any number of songs, but the sounds collide most daringly (and less Jarboe-ly) on this one. I’m hoping they continue twisting things into this frigid aural syrup. (Note: With Wild Nothing, Glasser, and Bat For Lashes on the mind, 2009 is definitely going out on a Kate Bush push.)

such a pretty cover!
The fact that there’s a rare reference to my favorite band, Dead Can Dance, made me download this.
Love u Tamaryn, Love u Stereogum
Saw Tamaryn open for Secret Machines last year in SF. Had never heard them before but they blew me away. Looking forward to the full length.
I love Tamaryn. She has guts, integrity, a real sense of poetry and a beautiful voice. For the record, I also think that it’s unfair to constantly compare female artists to Kate Bush (or the other usual suspects – Björk, PJ Harvey and Tori Amos). These ladies have a lot going on in their own right. They also have plenty of other influences, many of them not even female.
For a minute there, I thought it was a cover of Tom Petty…
