Three years ago, Midlake released The Trials Of Van Occupanther, a sweetly harmonized, intimately rocking sophomore album that took them far away from their native Denton, TX, placing them on big tours and year-end lists and the like. This third album’s taken time, by design. As they told Jessica in their Progress Report, “We didn’t know exactly what we wanted, but we know we didn’t want to make the same album as last time. We could have made 10 albums with the amount of time we’ve spent, but that doesn’t mean they’d be saying anything great.” Instead they committed to 40-hour work weeks in order to move away from the last record’s “Fleetwood Mac-y America” with a shift toward, at least in part, “British folk scene of late ’60s stuff.” The set finally has a release date — 2/2 via Bella Union in the States, and the day before in the UK — and an official title in The Courage Of Others. That’s its art above, here’s a tracklist and the first few dates of a tour that will take the quintet well through 2010:
01 “Acts Of Man”
02 “Winter Dies”
03 “Small Mountain”
04 “Core Of Nature”

06 “Rulers, Ruling All Things”

Super excited to hear the new material – although I can’t help but worry that I’m going to feel slightly let down because I loved Van Occupanther SO MUCH.
agreed – though if this is half as good as Van Occupanther, it will still be pretty damn good
RyGuy – yeah I feel the same way. It would be very hard for them to match Van Occupanther, so my hope is that they just don’t shit the bed like so many bands do after a great release.
Well, it’s about time!
Thrilled!
I’m having a hard time coping with so many awesome bands deciding they want to come to Louisiana. This makes me super happy.
well this is just fantastic news.
FANTASTICO!
i saw this article and the cover art was so cool i had to listen to something from them! listened to van occupanther and it ruled
i like midlake, but god, their cover are horrible!!
Looking forward to the new album, but it’s a little annoying that a band just an hour away from me isn’t playing a show in Texas.
Midlake is one of the greatest band that came to life this decade, their strength is that they don’t want to repeat themselves, every album (and it’s especially clear since VAN OCCUPANTHER) got his beauties buried and it takes at least a month listening to one of their album to catch all the intensity of the emotions present. the point is not to know if this album will be better, that is so childish, it’s an evidence that they will deliver pure gold because they don’t accept t give anything else than their best. LONG LIVE MIDLAKE, they have so much to give, you’ll see…
Downloads for “Acts of Man” and “Rulers, Ruling all Things” can be found on Pitchfork.com. Awesome tracks!
