There’s a progression at play here. There was Sigur Rós filming hairless young things frolicking in the woods for “Gobbledigook,” surpassed many months later by Girls’ XXX “Lust For Life” video featuring Hunx’s junk, which itself was trumped by the Flaming Lips’ “Watching The Planets” which was a showcase for Wayne’s coyne. The untapped avenue for flesh-tones? Interactivity, no doi. Enter Yeasayer.

The band released a great single with two great remixes so I think we can all agree it’s time to take all your clothes off. Over at amblingalp.com there’s a smeary sample of “Ambling Alp” that’s a hypnotic soundtrack to an excuse for you to interact with bare bodies running and sitting and generally being naked in a trippy way. Pan the cam, rotate, etc. It’s not the full song so not a proper video per se — maybe it’s the precursor to one. Or maybe it’s just a way to raise awareness for their 12″. (Rule: nudity is a good way to raise awareness for all sorts of 12″s). So, click.

Pro tip: You’re not supposed to watch this at work.

I was checking this out from work yesterday and I totally had to shut it of before a coworker saw.

  3. Some bodies are just better not having been seen. Boobies on the other hand…

all these pseudo hippy dippy indie bands are getting old. edward sharpe, mGmt, yeasayer, amazing baby etc-etc – all bullshit. showing tits and ass with 8MM cameras. the music is what matters, not all the other fluff. go tune your guitars, and wipe off the facepaint

  6. After the profanity in band names well has been bled dry…

Their twitter says is a teaser for the video.

  7. I dig this whole embracing of our bodies thing. Our bodies are so politicied via discussions of health care, abortion, etc that I think its wise to portray people reclaiming their bodies for other purposes. I actually liked the girls video least because it perpetuates the idea that nudity is still about sex and seems to have a political agenda, albeit a just one. While I think it does great work to unearth sex from the shadows by portraying it as public (in the sense that its in a video that is public) and yet still explicit and joyous, I like how the other three don’t even call attention to the nudity. They present bodeis as entirely natural and social. Which is how they (we) should be portrayed instead of through historically Puritan prudishness. Really what this all boils down to is that I don’t want nudity to be rebellious. I just want it to be ok. Fuck clothes!

i think its funny i was watching current vanguard and it was about porn, one of the women explain how every time there is a new technology we try to have sex with it. i’m not sure this counts a sex lol but i can see some truth in her statement.

I don’t find it interesting to talk about what I liked or disliked in these videos. But I’ve been thinking about what Silas said. Sure, we are born naked, but the village is important too. Our society’s values and rituals have meaning. Being naked means something. It means something different in every culture, but it still communicates something. Silas calls for an end to this meaning. They question our cultures sexual values, but fail to present any evidence that these values are misplaced. We all want nudity to be okay, and you say you don’t want this effort to be rebellious. It is inherently rebellious because it contradicts widely accepted social values and definitions. If you want attempt to redefine your society’s values, that is perhaps one of the most radical forms of rebellion. This is all regardless as to whether society’s values are what you think are right or wrong.

  10. The village is important, sure. Our society’s values and rituals have meaning, sure. I certainly need to clarify what motivates my fantasy. I know that the means in which I (we) would acheive my desire (to be naked) is inherently rebellious. But what videos like Sigur Ros’, The Flaming Lips’ and now, Yeasayer’s imagine is a world (or at least a scene, a setting) in which nudity is not rebellious but simply a choice to be unencombered by clothes when one chooses. That is what I want. I suppose I am just dreaming of a future reality (post rebellion, perhaps) in which nudity is seen as a non-issue like, for example, Women’s suffrage is today.

Which brings me to my ultimate motivation for my original comment. You are correct that I failed “to present any evidence that [our current sexual] values are misplaced,” so let me present that evidence. I think our obsession with censorship is inherently sexist. I observed this in high school when one of my friends was reprimended heavily for a ‘dress code’ violation. Her shirt was apparently too revealing. Upon looking at the dress code, every rule except for those pertaining to profanity/vulgarity on clothing was directed towards girls dress. Any guy was (is) allowed to wear a tank top that shows most of his (sometimes hairy, obese) chest and which fully displayed his nipples when he bent over. And yet somehow cleavage is a terrible transgression of visual peace and normalcy. Some counterargument suggests that men will inevitably get turned on when they see cleavage and thus it disrupts the workplace/school. This would be a good argument if it wasn’t entirely sexist and phallocentric. This logic basically claims women’s actions need to be controled (via these rules) so that men can function BECAUSE that is what is important.

You need to look no further than the third comment on this very thread, wherin one SubSickAlien perfectly displays this logic: “bodies are gross, boobs are not.” Alien doesn’t even comment on the women, just boobs. Is this not the objectification that comes out of censorship that panders to masculin centered power?

Or, Ahab, is your world view centered on a huge white Dick?

Great. now the NSFW has been decreed the new ironic trend? great. we’ll get to see more and more less than attractive and less than talented bands baring it all to make sure they get the “NSFW” tag and people will pay attention to it. great. mustache = out. nudity = in.

Um….. exactly how does seeing wayne coyne’s balls trump one guy singing into another guy’s erection?

Also – never forget that Danzig video where a guy puts a nail through his penis or that horrible horrible Ramstein vid.

  13. No clothes = cheaper video? yesh

I’m late to this thread, but the nude has been subject of art for thousands of years. Nothing new or edgy with using the human form. I don’t how or why a nude would be NSFW in this context.

This video feels forced and derivative. The nudes reminds me of Ryan McGinley’s hipster nude photography/videography. The band covered in goo, the desert location and general psychedelic mushroom eating bend reminds me of Grizzly Bear’s video for the Knife except not done as well.

The song sounds like it could have just as easily come from Animal Collective.

I enjoyed most of Yeasayer’s first album, but what I have seen so far feels like borrowed trendiness.
