Two years ago Damon Albarn told NME that Gorillaz wouldn’t make any more pop records. But you know better than to take Damon’s word on the future of his endeavors. In a recent interview with the Guardian he says his cartoon band’s next LP has a title (Plastic Beach, because “the idea that plastic, we see it as being against nature but it’s come out of nature. We didn’t create plastic, nature created plastic.”) is “going really well.” He also confirmed a bunch of other details, like the guest list (Lou Reed, Mos Def, Barry Gibb, and Bobby Womack), and that it features seagulls, and that not only is it a pop record, but it’s the “most pop record he has ever made.” OK! Additionally Albarn is working on a Royal Opera House-commissioned “proper” opera with Alan Moore (Watchmen), and a trio project with Flea and Tony Allen (last seen with Damon on The Good, The Band & The Queen). And while Blur has decided to let Pavement soak up all that good U.S.-reunion-tour money, at least we’ll get this:

A new Blur doc titled No Distance Left To Run hitting theaters in January. There’s an abstract…

Filmed throughout the band’s 2009 rehearsals and acclaimed summer tour, No Distance Left To Run finds all four members of blur together for the first time in nine years. With previously unseen archive material alongside new interviews and reportage, the film recounts the highs and lows of a very British band from the late 80′s to their headline return at Glastonbury and Hyde Park. The result is a musing on Englishness and identity and a portrait of friendship and resolution.

…and a trailer:

Feel as good as possible given Blur isn’t touring the States, Inc.

Damon , Flea and Tony Allen sounds neat!

  4. This new doc makes me miss Blur even more.

    :(

  5. I’d kill to see Blur make a few US stops too, but any news about Damon making/releasing music in general is good news to me. He’s a brilliant musician and I love the vast majority of everything he’s done thus far.

And there seriously needs to be more excitement over a new Gorillaz album in the comments here. Last time I checked their s/t and Demon Days are still pretty awesome, so I’m definitely looking forward to it.

Has there ever been a more stirring, movie trailer-ready horn line (pre-Sufjan at least) than the one from The Universal? Blur in the States? It really really really could happen.
