Contenders were revealed in a primetime concert tonight hosted by LL Cool J and featuring the comedy of Smokey Robinson (“Don’t worry Taylor, Kanye’s not here.”). As expected, Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Swift, and Beyoncé made out well (they’re all up for Album Of The Year along with Dave Matthews Band for their worst album to date). Also expected: most categories’ nominations are equal parts Lolz and Zzzz. But a few bright spots: Good luck MGMT and Silversun Pickups on your Best New Artist nods! (MGMT’s “Kids” is also up for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals, competing with a live version of a 33-year-old Hall & Oates hit.) And Best Rap/Sung Collaboration recognizing “I’m On A Boat”?! You crazy for this one, NARAS. Check the full list here. The 52nd annual event airs 1/31 on CBS and I gotta feeling that there will be a Michael Jackson tribute.

Whoa, the Grammys are not even trying anymore. Can’t they use Google to figure out if a “new” band had already released an album THREE years ago? And not even a self-released/only my closest friends heard this type of album. Ugh.
My granddaughter just told me about this “Google” people seem to be surfing the web on. After checking that particular internet out, I concur it is easily one of the best new websites around.
BEST ROCK ALBUM
* AC/DC – Black Ice
* Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood – Live From Madison Square Garden
* Green Day – 21st Century Breakdown
* Dave Matthews Band – Big Whiskey And The Groogrux King
* U2 – No Line On The Horizon
ur doin it wrong
Other notable “indie” entries:
Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals ?
MGMT – Kids
Best Alternative Music Album
Death Cab For Cutie – The Open Door?
Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix?
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – It’s Blitz!?
Best Recording Package
Neko Case – Middle Cyclone
I’m hoping YYYs win for “It’s Blitz” but something tells me that they’ll give it to DCFC, which is unfortunate because they’ll be winning for an EP I forgot even came out and and not even a proper full length album.
But wait, that Death Cab ‘album’ as an EP x.x
Just up there because of Twilight or somethig, le sigh.
Other entries I missed:
Best Contemporary Folk Album
Neko Case – Middle Cyclone
Best Americana Album
Wilco – Wilco (The Album)
All us elitist pricks know the Grammys haven’t matter for several years but this is ridiculous. They basically pick whatevers been popular on the Billboard charts that year.I’m positive Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift will win. Taylor is talented enough but Jesus Christ give it a rest already. Also any award show that even acknowledges LMFAO’s existence dosen’t deserve anyones respect.
Patton Oswalt’s up for Best Comedy Album, but will probably lose to George Lopez.
i thought nickelback was up for best comedy album
I have to agree on MGMT as ‘new’. Electric Feel won a Grammy last year for best remix from Justice.
Yeah, and it seems odd to me that they were nominated before but still up for Best New Artist while the Grammys snubbed Gaga for Best New Artist because she’s been nominated before…
The Grammys = No sense.
JUSTICE isssssssssssssssss the shit.
I don’t get why Silversun Pickups are getting a Best New Artist nomination when “Carnavas” was just as or if not more popular than “Swoon” commercially, on the radio and was released on the same label. I know this is the same institution that gave Feist a Best New Artist nod after her iTunes breakthrough, but not much has changed between Silversun’s public visibility back then and right now.
fall be kind is a better then the open door.
why hasn’t animal collective won a grammy yet?
because republicans own the Big Four labels? because the good music is never the face of Wal-Mart clothing lines and marketing ploys?
Anyone catch the broadcast? I could be wrong, but was Ringo wearing a shirt with Michael Jackson’s mug shot on it?
didn’t the mgmt album come out in ’07? silversun have been really famous for a couple years also.
I think MGMT came out ‘officially’ in Jan ’08. I remember reading somewhere that you’re eligible for Best New Artist through your first three releases as long as you haven’t been nominated before – not sure how accurate that is though.
Oh, and Ringo was wearing a shirt with Frank Sinatra’s mugshot on it
yeah something like that. i’m not 100% sure if there’s a set number for how many releases the breakthrough must occur in (i feel there should be, and three makes sense).
oracular specatular definitely came out in jan of 2008, which technically would’ve made it eligible for these awards last year (the eligibility period for these batch of nominations is 10/1/08 – 8/31/09), but i guess the thing with best new artist is based on the single released during the eligibility period that makes them a “public” breakthrough artist. and “kids” was released in mid oct, apparently, and that’s clearly the track that’s getting nominated. even though i thought i was hallucinating and had gone back in time when i saw mgmt and silversun pickups nominated for best new artist now.
and i was just hallucinating when i saw the ting tings get nominated period.
(forget about my feelings for LMFAO, seeing black eyed peas everywhere, following seeing them share a stage with mick jagger and u2 at rock and roll hall of fame, and my sheer joy upon the I’m On A Boat nom)
NEEDS MORE ANIMAL COLLECTIVE
seriously though, the grammys are the worst.
I first assumed you were kidding, but I’m not certain, so…..
What in god’s name would Animal Collective have ever been nominated for a Grammy award for? Pitchfork Lifetime Achievement Award? Most blog mentions? I like ‘em okay, but, man, is the ratio of music site praise to decent records about 900:1?
was Michael Jackson nominated for anything??
What? No love for “I’m On A Boat” getting nominated for “Best Rap/Sung Collaboration,” a category which I swear I’m not making up?
The Grammys are super-awesome!
ron artest got snubbed for “michael michael”…
most depressing stereogum post in a while..
Well then… music journalist has officially become synonymous with alcoholic for me now, hasn’t it?
The DMB album is their best album (and only good one) in a decade. Real talk.
I’m a fan, but did not dig this LP at all. Maybe one or two decent songs.
The Black Eyed Peas shouldn’t have earned nominations for any categories as they are not musicians, they are clowns. They know they’re just joking, the audience knows they’re just joking (right?). Grammys might as well give the nod to Giggles or Jellybean, real, true clowns.
looks like the nominations for the mtv music awards
After last year’s “U.K. Invasion,” they said f*** the U.K. and f*** any artists who hasn’t broken multiple Billboard charts. I mean usually they will have at least one or two artists from different genres in the running for Album of the Year. The artists this year basically have the same fan base. They rarely compare/nominate jazz, americana, folk, blues, reggae and world albums to/over pop albums. If Welcome to Mali was eligible for a Contemporary World nod this year, I feel like it should have been up for an Album of the Year nod, as well. I would have even liked to see Maxwell up for Album of the Year instead of the embarrassing Black Eyed Peas. I guess since the music industry is “struggling” it makes sense for the Grammys to show praise to their most loyal brethren (all AotY albums are platinum certified). As the RZA says on the new Blakroc record, “If it don’t make dollaz, then it don’t make sense.”
Linkin Park getting nominated for ANY award is an epic fail.
Nothing says topical and with the times like Judas Priest and AC/DC nominations in 2009. Where the fuck is Mastodon? They could’ve been in either best hard rock or metal. It’s not like “Oblivion” was some obscure track; it was on mainstream rock radio. I mean, they threw fucking Lamb of God on there. Come on.
And at what point is there going to be an alternative to the alternative rock award? DCFC and Depeche Mode aren’t exactly “alternative” music anymore. But yeah, Byrne and Eno have that shit locked up. They’re probably the only name the voters will even recognize.
Every year, there’s a Ministry song and a Slayer song up for Best Metal Grammy. Every year. I can’t believe Metallica wasn’t throw in there, too. I mean, I know it’s just metal, right? But you have to wonder with such a lack of insight and knowledge in this category, how bad are the other ones?
*Yawn*. Good morning, everyone. I was apparently dreaming of a Wilco nom, you?
Hold the Taylor Swift, Gaga, Beyonce and BEP. I take my coffee black. I like sugar sometimes, just not in my coffee.
Congrats to Phoenix on the alt album nom. That’s pretty cool for them.
Wilco got a nom for Best Americana Album. Costello’s there too.
For all the late night work, I was kinda hoping for a Grizzly sighting in the Alternative Album. Some year I will learn to stop being so optimistic.
Who is LMFAO? What are The Grammy’s?
Jamie Foxx – Blame It video FTMFW
Does anyone know if any artists from Warp or Domino records (besides the Arctic Monkeys) have ever been nominated for a Grammy? This could be an absurd assumption, but maybe these labels don’t submit work without the consent of their artists. That would explain a lot. Offense intended, it is a shame that a Death Cab for Cutie EP holds a slot in the Best Alternative Album category. It isn’t the fact that it is by Death Cab for Cutie; it is a f***ing EP!!! Oh well, I guess fans of AC, GB, and DP can look forward to end of the year lists for their deserved recognition.
Interesting you mention it, because I was wondering about it myself. Does anyone know how this things work?
I’m pretty sure the labels have to submit it for consideration and invest money “lobbying” these releases, just like all the Movies and TV awards (Oscars, Emmys…)
I took a quick look at Wikipedia and it looks like Franz Ferdinand’s first two albums were nominated for Alternative Album of the Year, at least. I didn’t see any Warp artists at all (speaking of which, the Best Dance/Electronic Album category is appalling, for the most part, in its selections).
Also according to Wiki, you’re right – nominations have to be submitted by a record company or individual. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award#Nomination_process
Oops, upon further review, I missed a Clinic album that was also nominated for Best Alernative Album. Unfortunately, Coldplay’s A Rush of Blood To The Head was also nominated that year, so I’m sure you can guess how that ended.
And some more Grammy trivia – DCFC aren’t the first to be nominated in the Alternative category with merely an EP. Apparently Radiohead’s Airbag/How Am I Driving? EP was nominated in 1999 (and lost to the Beastie Boys’ Hello Nasty). However, the Airbag EP is awesome whereas I completely forgot that DCFC even came out with an EP this year, so yeah, that still really sucks.
RECORD OF THE YEAR
Beyonce, ?Halo?
The Black Eyed Peas, ?I Gotta Feeling?
Kings Of Leon, ?Use Somebody?
Lady Gaga, ?Poker Face?
Taylor Swift, ?You Belong With Me?
LOL
I just don’t get it.
Ugh, glad I haven’t eaten breakfast yet. I know the Grammys have never been and will likely never be “in touch,” but I thought after doing some relatively cool stuff last year (despite giving the most important award to a covers album done by two artists long past their respective primes) there might be a tiny bit of hope for years to come. But… the fucking Black Eyed fucking Peas? Seriously? Usually their shitty choices can be explained by their appeal to either old white dudes or 12 year old girls… but who even likes The E.N.D., let alone thinks it’s a “Best of” anything?
And of course most of the rest of the nominations suck too, but it’s too early in the morning for me to process that much idiocy. Congrats to MGMT, Phoenix, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and all of the other good music that somehow made it through the shitstorm.
pretty sure the public won’t recgonize good music that has came out because they are to busy listening to the likes of owl city’s “Fireflys” and Katey perry shit.
WTF no “where the wild things are” i swear if she doesn’t win an oscar for that soundtrack the world is f’d. that is the best use of music in a film i have seen in years.
Great list of the worst music of 2009 though ;)
Phoenix, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and MGMT is the exceptions, but MGMT is 2008!
The Black Eyed Peas? Are they fucking kidding?
“Sigh* I still don’t get why MGMT is still getting so much praise.
I’m on a Boat is nominated for a Grammy. And it’s not in the comedy category. Seriously, that tells you everything about the Grammys.
This is the worst Grammy Year I’ve ever seen. I can’t blame them, people would stop watching the Grammys if bands like Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear start winning instead of your Beyonces and Taylor Swifts. But come on, Black Eyed Peas? Dave Mathews Band? Lady Gaga? The Grammy voters need to stop voting for the most “Popular” albums and start voting for the “Best” albums. Because if it keeps going on like this, thrashy bubblegum pop music will continue to dominate the music industry
The Grammy nominees are essentially just like the other best-of/end-of-year lists. So when you’re reading one of the countless other lists, just remember that it isn’t the worst list you can find this year. The Grammys have had the worst “best-of” lists for over 50 years straight now, and this year is no exception.
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE/GRIZZLYBEAR/DIRTY PROJECTORS > GRAMMYS
fo sho
Seriously where the hell is Mastodon? They got nominated for Colony of Birchmen? Why not for anything on their best album to date??? The lack of AC or GB in the Alt. category is depressing, as is the inclusion of Death Cab’s EP (i really disliked that EP, not a single track worth keeping on that one). Cool that Phoenix got nominated. LOL @ Sspu nominated for “best new artist” even though Lazy Eye was more popular than anything on the new album… Just a dumb ass list overall
the grammys blow. i knew they were going to overlook most of the deserving artists for more “marketable” or “recognizable” ones like they always have. it’s not an award show, but a popularity contest to get ratings. instead of complaining about who didn’t get nominated, i hope more people ignore this clear channel endorsing mockery of the state of music
Where is Raekwon?
Even among detractors, though, there was a modicum of respect for the nominations this year, if not the presentation show. Scott Lapatine, founder and editor of the indie-rock blog Stereogum, wrote that the ceremony was ?equal parts Lolz and Zzzz.? Those lolz ? as in laugh-out-loud moments ? included a nomination of Hall & Oates?s ?Sara Smile? for best pop performance by a duo or group. Originally released in 1976, the song qualified in a live version released last year.
I totally don’t know (nor care) what this post is about. I only needed to read the word Grammys on the heading to immediately decide to comment the following:
I fucking hate the grammys. Burn in hell.
Does anyone else find it funny/sad that two of the contenders for album of the year are from last year.
I do sebastian, but thats the way their cycle is. It souldn’t be that way, since most people have already forgotten about those albums. I just wish the grammys wouldn’t put so much stock into flavors of the month/year(lady gaga). Their movie counterpart(oscars) seems to understand this, but not them.
We only have to put up with this for a handful of years. The music industry will soon begin to change before we know it. We are the children of the internet, soon what people like us say will matter. Besides, when was the last time anybody put stock in who won a grammy?
I feel ya creeptone. I feel there will come a time when the Grammys ratings will drop significantly and they will wonder what happened. They will see a world when commercial music is dead because of the internet takeover and they we will finally be able to steak that flag in the top of the mountain. Maybe someday The Gummys will be the forefront in music awards.
Why even report on the Grammys?
It saddens me to see that Regina Spektor was not recognized at all.
I like food I hope that wins
Does anybody else besides me know what Lady Gaga’s weakness is? There’s that one thing that if you do to her, she is rendered absolutely useless…Does anyone else know what you have to do to her?
poke her face.
**Given the OPTIONS (cough cough yack yack)…these are worthy of an award.
Best Pop Instrumental Performance
The Fire
Imogen Heap
Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals and Best Rock Song
Use Somebody
Kings Of Leon
Best Alternative Music Album
It’s Blitz!
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
(I do like Phoenix but HELLOOOOOO…)
Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical
Ellipse
Imogen Heap
Now, if Britney wins best dance, I think she will have deserved it. I mean, she’s been through a lot (lol) and she would have achieved the unthinkable. Go Britney!
As for you people, yes…their nominations are 99% bullshit. But if the bands we love were nominated, they would be under different management and probably start sucking ass so just be thankful you know how to turn off the damn radio.
You mentioned Britney spears, Eclipes and Kings of Leon……wow…..music fail
And why are we mentioning Britney Spears, Shes not doing ballet, shes doing the same shit she been doing for years, plus that song 3 makes me wanna blow my fucking brains out.
The Grammys really need to adapt to the digital age. Even if they read a site like Pitchfork, they might get something right.
I watch the Grammys every year and I can never really remember why. I find a lot of the more diverse awards are given out before the actual broadcast even begins, leaving a lot of lesser known but amazingly brilliant groups and artists are left forgotten in the dust of the mainstream top 40s. However, I do hope that Death Cab For Cutie, Green Day and Lady Gaga pull through with some recognition. I know that the last two are usually accepted by mainstream, but they are artists I can respect for sure so I think they deserve credit in comparison to other nominated in the categories.
Fuck the noms. After seeing that they nominated a repetitive, horribly produced, sad attempt at pop-izing Jewish phrases, party “anthem” for song of the year (I’ve got a feeling), I lost all hope in the Grammy’s and their judgement. Taylor swift? GAGA (All of her songs sound the same!)?
Fuckers on the board must be getting senile now or sumthin’.
I love LMFAO i’m so happy for them! they have remixed everyone from gaga to black eyed peas kanye even katy perry and they have made all the songs so much BETTER!!!! Lmfao are on fire look out gaga LMFAO have this one! and to all the haters that just goes with fame there are alot of haters out there cuz they have no life Lmfao for the GRAMMY WIN!!!!!!!!

Lamb of god-For Best Metal Preformance,
That is all I care about.
it would explain alot if domino didn’t subit acts this (dirty projectors, animal collective seem to be coming top at most end of year lists but aren’t nominated, they are both on domino) but there’s a franz ferdinand remix in there so I don’t know if that would be counted as domino or not.
yeah yeah yeahs for best alt. album (my favourite album of the year) and I hope karen o wins the single written for a film with ‘all is love’
I hear that the black eyed peas are going to put on a killer performance!
