I’d suggested you dust-off your copy of Novelty for D.C. post-hardcore quartet (and recent Death Cab collaborators?) Jawbox’s Jimmy Fallon-facilitated reunion, but since the group just reissued For Your Own Special Sweatheart, it makes sense they focused on that album last night. They did the collection’s “Savory” on air and rehearsed For Your opener “FF=66″ along with “Desert Sea” from the self-titled fourth album and “68″ which backed the initial “Savory” single and can be found on My Scrapbook Of Fatal Accidents, etc. We have three of the four tracks for your viewing pleasure/nostalgia crash. J. Robbins sported a “Fight Spinal Muscular Atrophy” as homage to his son, Cal. And Trenchmouth and Sleater-Kinney members (see stage right during “Savory”) were in the house. According to Jimmy, this is a one-off in the truest sense: there are no secret gigs planned, no reunion tour — just yesterday afternoon’s dress rehearsal, and last night’s televised performance. That increases the stakes on these embeds a little.
“FF=66″
“68″
As Fallon mentioned, the reissued and remastered For Your Own Special Sweetheart is out via DeSoto/Dischord. “68″‘s included as one of the three bonus tracks.

Thanks for posting this. I got to see them twice on the tour for this album and I’d since forgotten how fun it is to watch Kim Coletta play. She has a great barely-containable joy that’s refreshing compared to a lot of other musicians. It’s also nice to see a show where it didn’t look like the drummer wanted to hurt the rest of the band.
If Jimmy Fallon is responsible for this reunion, then I really think he should reformat his show to be the American equivalent of Jools Holland. He and The Roots could make that happen.
I DONT see that happening, the Jools Holland thing. Fallon just doesn’t have the juice for that like THE Jools Holland did/does. ALTHOUGH, it’s still a good idea, and they could try, and they should. Cause theres no way that show will last in it’s now-state, Fallon is just not good at interviewing. Once he starts laughing he starts slurring his words, he can’t even understand him, like him n all but, not gonna work. SO YEAH, try to copy Carson Daily and go for the music, worth a shot. He could try to takeover for that VH1 guy who did Bands Reunited, that’d create a solid buzz.
I’ve never heard/seen Jawbox before. It looks like they got someone’s mom to fill in on bass (at least in the video for 68).
She is the original bassist and not filling in, they have been around since 1990 so yeah, she is old enough to be a mom. I’m a dad myself and i’m sure most of their fans are parents by now, LOL!
She is a mom. Duh.
Sorry, but this is terrible. Barely any memorable melodies in this song, this guy does not have the voice to pull off this kind of singing / shouting style. I do not understand how some people think they are underrated, these guys simply could not write great songs, they have a few decent ones, but they were/are mostly mediocre.
thank you!!!
some things just don’t hold up and are better off left un-reunited.
“these guys simply could not write great songs,”
wow. actually not a surprise because everyone’s either trying to a fuckin comedian or attempt to evaluate a band’s potential by the few songs they streamed/stolen.
i’d recommend anyone to follow j. robbins discography (from jawbox to burning airlines to channels), come back, and still tell me he can’t accomplish what your indie gods are doing.
apparently, ignorance is empowering on the internetz.
I have listened to “For Your Own Special Sweetheart” and “Novelty” a couple of times and gave them enough chances. I like similar bands like Drive Like Jehu and Unwound but these guys sound really crappy and boring to my ears.
Drive Like Jehu have always sounded similar but inferior to my ears, although they might be equal in intensity their musical talent is lacking. Sorry.
Try listening to Chinese Fork Tie off JAWBOX’s final self-titled album and try tell me i’m incorrect.
I’m only stating this because you said they were CRAPPY and boring, not just boring.
To each their own, I suppose. Personally I thought they sounded great. The complete opposite of boring to me.
I’ll admit it took me a while to LOVE them but then I got into them backwards, starting with the self titled record (which needs to be re-released on vinyl ASAP). But once it clicked, I saw them for the geniuses that they are.
Kerosene 454…
Who else is waiting for a Shiner reunion.Totally stoked for knee ripped jeans to play on Jimmy Fallon.
Oh yeah, I heard bowl cuts were on next week.
YES….I’m waiting for the SHINER reunion too!!! How bout a Jawbox/Shiner mini-tour. Yeah dude above saying J. Robbins can’t write good songs is — well — wrong. He is one of the most prolific songwriters in the last 20 years.
Surprised he likes Drive Like Jehu, but not Jawbox?!?! weird.
Burning Airlines have 2 amazing albums. and Channels are just as good as Jawbox in many ways. oh well……..
Don’t know if you’re aware of this but Allen Epley of Shiner has a band called THE LIFE AND TIMES and their new album TRAGIC BOOGIE is the best album of 2009 in my opinion. Check them out here http://www.myspace.com/thelifeandtimes
What we really need is for my favorite band of all time HUM to make a new album and not just reunite every couple years to play a show.
frankly this was very boring. this music sounds incredibly dated.
To add my own two cents: If you’re looking at the D.C. stuff from that period (give or take) I was always much more a fan of Lungfish, Shudder To Think, and Fugazi, etc. And that’s just a quick sampling of the tighter circle… Those bands all seemed (and seem) much more unique/weird/compelling/etc to me. Jawbox always struck me as sort of meat-and-potatoes and fun to see live — my friend loved them, so I’ve seen them live like 14 times — but nothing that blew my mind. And, as far as “jaw” bands go, I’d rather see a Jawbreaker reunion. Again, the music has always struck me as more personal and idiosyncratic, or whatever.
I realize Jawbreaker is random to the above constellation, so if you want to stick in D.C. and hit a younger band, how about Hoover?
speaking of bands like Fugazi and Jawbox- does anyone remember Skiploader? They toured with Shudder to Think and had that joint “N2O”…good stuff.
I remember seeing the “N2O” video soon after Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees” on MTV’s 120 Minutes back in ’95…ya know, back when there was a point to ever putting MTV on…
if you don’t like the band: A. why did you watch any of these videos? B. why waste time posting on a message board that you don’t like the band? nobody cares that you don’t like jawbox.
I’ve never loved Jawbox enough to go out and buy a whole record (Channels and Burning Airlines were more my bag), but they wrote some cool songs and it certainly interested me that they were on television, considering that I never got to see them.
But to start calling music “dated” is about the dumbest thing I can expect to read on a website that features such a wide variety of music. I’ve always felt that ALL music is dated (from its release date); and therefore, none of it is more dated than anything else. To be a great music fan is to understand context, and that entire early-90′s DC scene was truly remarkable in context.
Jawbox is a phenomenal group of musicians and prolly one of the more polished outfits to come out of the Dischord archives. Sometimes just takes a few spins to acquire a taste for the music. They are the perfect definition of a progressive band. Every album got better. J is also a great engineer. One great example of his work in that field would be the debut full length from The Life and Times. Anyone like Pink Floyd? lol The band formed after the break up of Jawbox was named Burning Airlines. This group was extremely polished live. I recall seeing them on the opening night of there tour in Nashville and to this day that show was a top five on my list of all time great shows. The current band J is in is named Channels and compared to Jawbox and B- Airlines it is almost as if a new expansion of sound has been opened up with the current project. Not alot of live stuff from the group but they are current I believe. Love the drummer from K454.
With that being said. Jawbox is in my opinion one of the all time top indie/post punk/prog outfits ever. If anyone can get a hold of the Jawbox cover issue of Magnet magazine, read the article and understand how the band went about creating the music. It is an extremely interesting article that sets Jawbox apart from the “typical” band. Not to mention the lyrics and unusual chord progressions . I was a tad bit disappointed when they did not reunite for the debut of the Burn to Shine D.C. volume…… DVD If you do not care for the music you may just not “get it”. Play on mighty Jawbox. Love it!
