The Drum’ “I Felt Stupid” is a really catchy song … wait for that chorus. As I mentioned last time:
On their MySpace they list the Smiths, the Legends, the Shangri-Las, the Tough Alliance, the Embassy, Orange Juice, and Joy Division as influences. Also, you might feel like standing on a beach with the Cure after listening to the immediately infectious “I Felt Stupid.”
Turns out they don’t know how to surf, so they stay in shape in other ways: The Chris Moukarbel and Valerie Veatch-directed video finds the Brooklyn-via-Florida crew going for a run in McCarren Park before a couple Drums muss up their white workout gear wrestling in the dirt. No hard feelings: All four get together to tear through the song, complete with energetic cymbal tambourine spinning that approximates (and makes up for) an earlier sad sad sad discus.
One more rep:
It’s getting dark before 5PM, so here’s “Let’s Go Surfing,” one of the 20 Queerest Indie Songs of 2009, to cheer you up:
“I Felt Stupid” b/w “Down By The Water” is out via Moshi Moshi.

I don’t care how many videos they film in McCarren, this group has absolutely no credibility.
Exhibit A: The singer’s and guitarist’s previous band…

Here’s what I know about the Drums: Super hot band members who used to be in Elkland. I, for one, loved Elkland! Also, these songs are super fun. I would love if they got popular on the radio; wouldn’t that be better than everything else right now? Also, they’re hot; did I mention that?
More reminded of Modern English than anything else. And holy shit, I know we’ve had an ’80s fetish this decade but these guys even went out and got the bad ’80s haircuts to match their sound. This looks like something out of the mid ’80s.
You mean energetic tambourine? And discuss, not shot put. Geez. But I love the Drums!
You mean discus, not discuss. Idiot. But I still love the Drums!
the drums are a good example of how marketing and fashion are becoming more influencial than musical content in the indie world these days…these guys are posers.
On their MySpace they list bands they’re going to RIP OFF such as the Smiths, the Legends, the Shangri-Las, the Tough Alliance, the Embassy, Orange Juice, and Joy Division. And note, this whole black and white track thing was completely done by THE LEGENDS from their Facts And Figures album… even the way he dances seem almost identical to a certain someone from another band…
I wish I saw them taping this at McCarren Park, I probably would’ve thrown rotten vegetables at them.
“Let’s Go Surfing” is a great track, but this one is horrible. Very disappointing after such a promising first single.
They used their American Apparel Ad payoff to shoot this video. Let’s Go Surfing is tremendous. This song is pure shit.
