Years ago, watching this U.K. ad for an insurance company called Swiftcover would have been as shocking as the Stooges very presence was in the ’60s. These days, it shouldn’t really surprise anyone how easily Iggy Pop’s allowed himself to become a dummy. If he’s not hawking sweet premium rates in a convertible with a puppet version of himself, he’s up to something about as silly (see: this). That jpg says it all. “I wanna be your flog” – Iggy Pop circa 2010. The weirdness:

Props to Pop for showing a little self-awareness at the end there. And for covering his torso, sorta.

I dunno, it doesn’t bother me too much. It’s an eye-roller, but he’s never tried to place himself above money or commercialism. At least it’s not a goddamn butter commercial.

  2. This ad caused quite a stir, cos apparently Iggy (despite vouching for the company) wouldn’t actually be able to take out a policy with this company, because their contracts exclude high-risk people like artists!

    Nice said of blue…

  5. why is he driving as if he was in britain but is also surrounded by palm trees?

  6. whatever, its Iggy Pop. Let him do what he wants.

  7. People are always so quick to judge once a personality ‘sells out’ to an advert. Yes, it’s lame, I’m sure he’s well aware that it’s embarrassing, I’m also sure he’s feeling the benefit of the huge amounts of money advertising pays. It doesn’t really compromise him as an artist does it — but anyone is free to turn their nose whilst being flown around in the huge huge spaceship he can afford.

  8. Who cares? He’s old, he’s famous, and he’s making money. Good for him. Unless, wait, was Iggy Pop ever in Fugazi? Hmmm. No. I don’t think he probably was. Then yeah, who gives a hot god damn? Jeezus.

  9. No offense, I love this site, but that’s Iggy Pop. Let’s check the tone.

Iggy Pop is a legend but I do roll my eyes each time this plays …

  11. I tell you who is really winning on this thing: Jeff Dunham…. ‘Cause that’s one of this puppets, right?

  12. This scares me.

I’ve loved him for 35 years – I can’t see any change in his routine. I don’t understand the phrase, ‘sell-out’? It’s work.

Gotta get me one of those puppets:-)
