We’ve heard the stylistically diverse “81” pastoral and jazzy “Good Intentions Paving Company” outing. Now, after adding the gorgeous 9-minute madrigal/short story “Kingfisher” to the Have One On Me tracklist, the only thing to be sure of is that the 3-CD collection won’t be following one specific path. But color me impressed. You can hear the new song, per usual, at dragcity.com (via GvsB). And, speaking of tracklists, Drag City’s made that available, too:
01 “Easy” (6:04)
02 “Have One On Me” (11:02)
03 “’81″ (3:52)
04 “Good Intentions Paving Company” (7:02)
05 “No Provenance” (6:25)
06 “Baby Birch” (9:30)
07 “On A Good Day” (1:49)
08 “You and Me, Bess” (7:13)
09 “In California” (8:42)
10 “Jackrabbits” (4:23)
11 “Go Long” (8:03)
12 “Occident” (5:31)
13 “Soft As Chalk” (6:29)
14 “Esme” (7:56)
15 “Autumn” (8:02)
16 “Ribbon Bows” (6:11)
17 “Kingfisher” (9:11)
18 “Does Not Suffice” (6:45)
Have One On Me is out 2/23.

So if this pattern continues, we should get another new song next Tuesday around 12:30. Also, this song is absolutely beautiful.
Not feeling this. WAY too long and doesn’t do that much. Man as much as I lover her, not sure I can sit through over 2 hours of this.
someone please have mercy and put it on youtube already! dragcity just refuses to work for me.
Very reminiscent of Kate Bush
I am SICK of people comparing her to Kate Bush.
It’s like comparing a rower to a kayaker. Sure they involve boats and paddles, but they are completely and utterly different sports. Sure, they both have a strange voice, and Bush and Newsom have that add odd twang, but that’s about as deep as the similarities run.

Boy, you’re really there my friend…
Absolutely painfully boring. The album is going to be bursting at the seams with filler.
right, because my guess is newsom got to about 2 hours worth of music and thought “eh… i need some filler here…” filler is only important to bands pumping out 3 minute pop songs looking for something between the exchange of highs and lows, which newsom is clearly not attempting. and thank god for that.
Jesus, give these songs some time. I remember thinking Ys was boring the first time I listened to it. It seems pretty harsh to pass such quick judgment on these songs.
drag city isn’t offering mp3 download with vinyl -> i’m not getting it. i went through a long exchange with one their salespeople about it last week. obviously the margins aren’t good enough on vinyl for them to give a shit about those customers.
i can not believe this. ever since they posted the mp3 for “’81″, i haven’t been able to access the drag city website. “haven’t been able”, as in NEVER, at no point during the past weeks, while constantly trying to. not via the main page, the album page or the direct link to any of the mp3s. is this somehow dependent on your browser, or system, or region (i’m from germany)? or am i always just minutes late after that website has crashed???
I’ve had troubles in the past, but I can access it right now with Firefox. I’m in ‘merica though.
it’s because vagina
10.0
def. the weakest track of the bunch so far
Dear Joanna,
I am so excited about the the new album!!! I love the songs so far: especially Kingfisher and 81!!!
I love the song but can you please invent a player with a pause button Drag City? It’s a nine minute song and I need to pee.
Thanks
“Good Intentions Paving Company” had me a bit spooked, but this is more like it. Joanna sounds much more in her element here. I love the minstrel-esque quality. Simply exquisite. The last three minutes damn near knock me out.
For those of you calling this one boring, I just don’t see it. There’s plenty going on in this song. It changes and blossoms constantly and is right up there with anything off Ys IMO.
Even though I’m not too fond of “Good Intentions,” I’m actually glad there will be material like that on the album. This album will be long and full of variety, and I think that’s a good and highly strategic move. So far we’ve heard “81,” which is a trinkety, short song hearkening back to Milk-Eyed Mender. “Good Intentions” represents her new live band direction, which is a sound that will bring LOTS of new people to Joanna’s music. “Kingfisher” is long and epic. It’s for the Ys heads. There will be something to please everyone.
My guess is that Have One on Me will have maybe an album’s worth of songs more like “Good Intentions.” The rest will be echoing her previous albums. All in all, I think it’s a brilliant idea. It may not be a definitive masterpiece like Ys, but it will be chockfull of amazing standalone pieces.
This didn’t intrigue me that much at first..but after like six (yes, six..) minutes I quite liked it. “Good Intentions” is still my favorite thus far though…good lyrics, beautiful transitions…yes, this album is surprisingly sure to be one of my favorites this year.
I like it when, after multiple songs, everyone has a different favourite. Makes me think I’m going to love the album.
Have One On Me is now on the Wikipedia page for “double album”, under the section on Triple Albums. In good company too – Sandinista! and All Things Must Pass.
i’m listening to this for the first time right now, haven’t heard any other new songs.
i like what i’m hearing
joanna, i want to fuck you
when did joanna newsom become so gorgeous
I’ve been playing “Good Intentions Paving Company” on repeat, but I’m definitely loving “81″ and “Kingfisher” as well. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the album!
