R.I.P. June Pointer, Diamond Dave's Career

I have a vivid memory of this, but I bet StereoDad and StereoSis have no recollection. When I was around six, dad offered to buy me and my sister a 7" of our choice with the promise he'd bring 'em home from work the following night. I requested "Jump"; my sister: "Solid (As A Rock)." I was expecting Van Halen, but was presented instead with with the Pointer Sisters' hit of the same name. Disappointing. But I probably played the shit out of it.

June Pointer, the youngest of the four siblings died of cancer today.

In her honor MP3 blog Spark*Pop presents five of the R&B hitmakers' most famous tunes. Elsewhere Lil' Mike has an in-depth profile and even more MP3s.

Stereogum's guessing you'll delete those by week end, so here's a rad cover in case you missed it last time we posted.
Le Tigre - "I'm So Excited" (MP3 Link Expired)

Oh, and as for David Lee Roth? He's apparently a "dead man talking."

Wow!! Indeed, I am so excited! What a grand cover - thanks for reposting for us slowpokes who didn't catch it first time around.

I feel for you Scott, I have a shockingly similar tale of parental disappointment involving a mix-up between Jesus & Mary Chain and Jesus Jones. Worst. Birthday. Ever.

My mom once bought me The Band's greatest hits and I looked at the list I gave her. At the top it said, "Band - Album" and below it listed the ones I wanted.

Did your dad REALLY call it a "seven inch?"

(Cue "seven-inch" related jokes, probably which will include the word "StereoMom.")

No, he probably just said "song." But at that time it's not like I had my own audio setup. I just remember we got 7"s. I guess it was before the time of the cassingle.

I still think "He's So Shy" contains one of the funkiest grooves ever laid down. R.I.P. June and condolences to Bonnie, Ruth, and Anita.

Jonathan Ross is dubbed "risque" by Ofcom but not in breach of rules over an interview with David Cameron...
