Jack Black Says: "Don't Be A Douche"

Scouring the Internets for the new Shins? Maybe you oughta watch this PSA first. Rocket Sauce doesn't just make itself, ya know. Remember when he was funny? (via BB)

That's put me right off DL'ing his new movie.

Or going to see it.

Uh. Great comedy is played straight. But this was almost too straight, the line between satire and sincerity was hard to detect. Or it just wasn't very funny.

I don't have high hopes for the Tenacious D movie. (And for the record, I am a Jack Black fan.)

I thought it was funny for about five seconds.. then iI realized that Jack Black is just a shill for the industry. Hey Hollywood, quit turning out crap like the Tenacious D movie, then maybe I will come back to the theater.

Sarcasm aside, it still isn't funny. Jack Black is a douche anyways.... the only time he was ever funny was in High Fidelity, and only for parts of that. Oh, and when he kicked baxter off the bridge.

this wasn't that bad... this is just basic tenacious D humor. i don't see why people diss things that they don't like because you'll already be against it. and jacks being sarcastic so calm down, and don't worry there'll still be a new Shins album.

i disagree dead_red_eyes...i think that jack black is a total industry shill, and that the irony in the psa is the same irony that pervades pop culture in general. the message in the psa is pretty clear..."piracy is wrong." fuck jack black. the argument that piracy stifles creativity is ridiculous (see: girl talk, hip-hop in general, wm burroughs, brion gysin, the dada movement, etc). i think that most of us support the bands we love by buying their merch; however, i seriously could care less if fucking metallica go broke over kids downloading music. digital rights in 07!

Jack Black was pretty awesome in Orange County.

This "stifles creativity" debate is interesting. Take a band like the Go Team or Girl Talk. They may thrive creatively off piracy, but that doesn't make it possible for theme to make a living off their work. Chances are those guys will be victims of the same shit.

By the way, sampling and downloading are worlds apart. One is a form of production, and the other consumption. Totally different.

Jack Black was good in one movie. Cable Guy. Don't knock him because he is making money. I don't give a fuck if he is an industry whatever.... This movie might blow. Get over it. It might rock, it might not. Never saw Nachos Liberation. Funny how The D was hot when playing 500 people arenas and now are kind of ghey when selling out for thousands. Sometimes people only give a shit when it's not popular to do so.

"i seriously could care less if fucking metallica go broke over kids downloading music. digital rights in 07!"

one of the weakest statements i've heard in a while.

look bud, no one cares about lars ulrich anymore, period. but there's a huge difference between "digital rights" and piracy. you have no "rights" if you fucking "DL" something off torrentspy. but If you legally purchased a copy, that's a different story.

I'm no saint, I download - moderately. iTunes also takes a good chunk of money from me, as well as record stores and movie theatres....not to mention all the concert tickets.

i'm not saying this necessarily justifies what i download, but there's a difference between downloading a few things because you think you may be interested in it, and just downloading and sharing shit for the fuck of it.

And what's with all the hating on the D?? i've seen them live and when i left my face hurt because i was laughing so fucking hard.

Downloading is stealing, yes. But stealing from whom? Mostly the labels, the disributors, and the studios who are taking all of the money. Stealing from some poor, talented indy rockers is a pretty fucking lame thing to do, but we're in a dilemma- as long as artisis are making only a few pennies off a record, the system is broken. Managers and labels are stealing MUCH MORE from the artists and doing MUCH MORE damage to the industry than pirates. Give me a working system, where artists get the money they should; where there aren't hundred-millionaires from overproduced pop schlock, but smaller bands can actually eek out a somewhat decent living with a smaller fanbase and a bigger cut.

Give me a way to buy music that I can use on mixes and give to my friends, and I will pay full price. Charge me $10 to download an album I can't share and can't play freely, and for which the artists are getting screwed, and I am going to steal.

Spoof aside, the argument about piracy is a valid one.

Pninny, I agree with you to an extent, but how are you affecting a change within the industry you loathe? Or for that matter, how is anyone here doing anything about "high ticket prices" and "the industry" fucking you over.

How about this, everyone: instead of whining on a hipster blog try DOING SOMETHING about it that goes beyond "I'm downloading this instead of buying it, yeah, fuck the system!" Real rebellious. That level of conviction is like having a Livestrong bracelet and saying you're fighting cancer.

At the end of the day, if no one buys an indie record, sure the labels get hurt more than the artists, but the artists don't make any money either. Bootleg live shows until the sky falls, test out music before you buy it, but if you enjoy a record, BUY IT. Bitches.

Did I miss something? This is an advertisment right? Not a PSA. "Super-mega rock'n roll stars are just regular dudes." This line clued anyone with a sense of humor into the fact this is a promo. But the humorless should have clued in when the logo for the film appeared at the end of the clip. And for the really dumb the New Line copywright at the end should have been the sledgehammer of clarity.

I'm not sure. I saw Tenacious D live a couple years ago in Dublin, just after the album was released.

Doors opened @ 7.30. There was no support act. We stood waiting, unentertained until 9.30. But when they started they were great!

Jack asked how many people had the album - there were cheers.

Jack asked how many people downloaded the album - there were (slightly less) cheers.

Jack spent 30 seconds declaring those who downloaded the album as fucking thieves.

He wasn't joking.

"The Official Tenacious D Policy on the Filming and Photographing of our Shows:
Have fun, go ahead tape our shows, but be cool and don't sell our stuff."

Doesn't sound like the kinda band that mind a bit of downloading.

It was obviously a joke/satire on the idea that piracy is killing the artist.

3. - he is making a living by doing this. you dont like what he does? then dont watch it. dont tell a man how to do his job! i dont go to the shopping centre and tell your dad how to clean puke off the floor for minimum wage, do i?
4. - did you not see some jack black fan coming in here and retaliating like this?

Now when are we going to get a PSA for the music industry that tells them to stop being a douche and actually pay the bands a decent portion of record sales? Who knows, if the bands got paid rather than the RIAA stealing all their money to sue people we might actually get some decent music for a change. I've been buying from Magnatune and the like because they treat their artists properly, I won't even think of buying a CD if the label is on my list of RIAA labels, so a lot of the big name bands are out for me but I'm doing a better job of supporting musicians than the people who ail about piracy but then support the real thieves every time they go to the record store.
