FYI -- Eligibility "year" is 10/1/04 to 9/30/05. That's why no Ariel Pink! Mariah, Kanye, and John Legend are today's happy campers, with eight nods each. But here are the categories you might care (to argue) about:

  • Ciara

  • The Arcade Fire Funeral
  • Beck Guero
  • Death Cab For Cutie Plans
  • Franz Ferdinand You Could Have It So Much Better
  • The White Stripes Get Behind Me Satan

    Other areas of note:

  • Gorillaz "Dirty Harry" competes in Best R&B Song!

Wow. A pretty meaningless collection of nominees. Why don't they just give them out according to the number of albums sold? At least then it'll be less arbitrary.

Doing the Grammys a la the Billboard Awards wouldn't actually work, in my opinion--the Grammys have a weird trend of picking out songs that no one's heard of and nominating them with songs that get tons of airplay and sales (like that Beyonce song on Roll Bounce nominated for Best R&B Female Peformance with Fantasia, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys and Amerie--who the hell even saw that movie, anyway?)

And my God, Ciara is seriously overrated--she's the Ashanti of 2005.

I know it's hip and fun to bash Coldplay, but honestly-if they beat out U2 in any of those categories I'll manage to lose even more faith in the Grammys (including the last shred of respect I gave them for OK Computer's Best Album nom). U2 made their best work in years, a true testament to their relevance and longevity, a collection of songs that actually (and unexpectedly) moved me. Coldplay dipped into the science of their songwriting and churned out generic versions of every track from A Rush of Blood (particularly Speed of Sound/Clocks lite). I suppose these awards aren't even relevant in the first place-but I'll still be checking to see who won, and I'll still react in a way that makes no sense given I had nothing to do with creating this music. Ah, but it's fun to care...

i'm happy for them to be nominated, i guess, but funeral came out in september last year and according to your dates that makes it inelligible?

The Arcade Fire was also nominated for another Grammy: Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media for the Six Feet Under Soundtrack. The other nominees include Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Beyond the Sea (Kevin Spacey!?!) and Napoleon Dynamite. Surely Six feet Under is a great choice...do you think that Ray and Bob might split votes?

I listen to so little pop radio, and watch so little TRL, that I'm not surprised when I haven't heard all of the songs that are nominated, especially in the specialty categories. However, I do expect to have at least HEARD of the nominees in a category like Best New Artist.

This is one of the most depressing noms lists in years. My prayers go out for Nickel Creek, Beck, Killers, Keane, etc...

Things I hope happen at the Grammys:
    1. Arcade Fire wins something.
    2. Kanye West wins Album of the Year.

if 2. does not happen, then:

    3. Kanye West freaks out and does something unintentionally funny.

Kanye West is a talented artist and producer, but Late Registration isn't even the best Rap album of the year, let alone the best album of the year overall. Besides, he'll be a LOT more fun to watch if he loses than if he wins.

Also what, at this point, are The White Stripes exactly "alternative" to? They're on a major label, they fill large auditoriums and concert halls, they play relatively straightforward blues-rock music, the lead singer married a supermodel . . . surely they're actually arrived by now.

The inclusion of The Arcade Fire is good to see, but the fact that Sufjan Stevens' Illinois didn't receive a single nomination is a travesty. I know some folks have already jumped on the backlash-wagon, but I genuinely think it might be the best record of the century, so far.

    lol at "coldplay got served"...

ya, "alternative" does seem like a misnomer since all those artists are pretty mainstream...

surprised to see mimi get so many nods. i know she's had a successful p.r. year, but it never ceases to amaze me that people listen to the garbage that is her emancipation. although, she seems crazier every time i see her on the tv, so maybe if she has a big night her ego will psychically implode and she'll finally be deemed crazy, be instutionalized, and never be heard from again. though i bet diddy would do the "bad boy asylum remixes" thereby re-injecting her back into the mass media.

Mariah Carey for the sweep! If the Grammy's suck they sould wallow in their suckiness and be banned from even mentioning a band with even a thimble of talent.

Why do you people wish good acts would win such a shitty award?

hello guys. its my first time here. seems interesting. about the grammys i think mariah should sweep the R&B categories, John Legend should win R&B male voc. & new artiste, and Kanye West has a great album but deserves Rap Album, rap solo and rap song

Why is it such a shock Mariah is nominated so much? 2 songs at #1 on the hot 100-more than anyone else this year, the ablum's sales will soon pass 50 cents as the top album this year (a little over 200 thousand over 50's ablum, but there's ten days left this year, and hits daily double predicts in 7 mariah will sell 250-275, and 50- 20 thou, leading to...), she proved everyone wrong who thought her career ended with glitter! Haters can talk all the crap they want, but even they can't deny mariah is the comeback kid of the year!!! Yet she's humble, she lives for her fans, and everyone on the grammy committee loves a comeback story. Bottom line, either mariah sweeps the grammys, or she only wins 1 or 2, but either way, 2005 was her year, and I want all the haters to burn for saying she'd never come back! Guess what? She did, and 2005 was her biggest year! God Bless Mariah!!!!

Alicia Keys sucks along with her song unbreaksble. Mariah needs to retire and there is no way she should win even one award but given the industry politics within the grammys let's not hold you breathes. concerning west, he doesn't even have the best rap album so if they are trying to make up for last year don't do it on our watch. ciara is not an artist as far as am concerned her album along with her vocal ability leaves much to be desired. legend is the man, he is talented and has a beautiful voice
