A New Low
The new Low album is all kinds of fantastic. Superproducer David Fridmann co-produced ... perhaps we have him to thank for this more aggressive sound from the king and queen of Duluth slowcore?
Buy The Great Destroyer here.
Previously: Low @ Mercury Lounge during CMJ.
Unfun fact: Years ago (before I knew of Low) I bought this at a used record store 'cause I liked the cover. Has anyone else ever done that?

Yay! Low!
I've done the cover thing with Ani DiFranco's Little Plastic Castle and The Ataris' So Long, Astoria. Ani ended up being wonderful, of course, but The Ataris - not so much. (Which reminds me, I still have it. Anyone want to swap? :D)

i still buy things by their covers all the time out of the bargain bin...found a lot of good things that way, and plenty of crap as well. i'm probably more likely to buy based on the label that puts it out now, though, if it's a cold buy.
and the new low is pretty great and keeps getting better with each listen. "california" and "step" are real stand-outs.

I used to do it all the time...but my list of wants is much to long to indulge...some of my favorite bands were discovered this way.

some of my favourite albums were bought simply because of the album cover: the masters of the hemisphere album, hymie's basement, and saves the day's "stay what you are".
not to hijack the comments here, but which Low album should i get first?

This is embarrasing but I once bought fIREHOSE instead of Firehouse (yea yea, I was young). Gotta say it fostered a respect for Mike Watt that continues to this day.

In the same vein, I suppose: I originally checked out Low because "Things We Lost in the Fire" is such a fucking cool name for a CD.

I did that once at Reckless Records with The Pandoras, who I had never heard of. It's a great album, so I don't regret it.

That Low record is indeed mighty nice. I think I'm still hooked on Secret Name, but with cuts like "Silver Rider" [possibly my favorite Low song right now], "Monkey", "Broadway (So Many People)", and "Pissing" [yeah, I know... not the best title in the world, but the melodies are classically brilliant Alan and Mim], this record's up there in the top five. [Who am I kidding? There's not a Low record I don't love.]

I bought a Beulah record simply because of the song title "If We Can Land A Man On The Moon, Surely I Can Win Your Heart."

low recommendation - my top 3 would be:
1. the curtain hits the cast
2. long division
3. things we lost in the fire
