I would have missed them too, cause they suck balls.

It was great because all the extras at the Death Cab concert on the show were just listlessly standing around, not sure how to react. Exactly like a real D.Cab show.
Score = 0
the swoopy "band cam" cinematography for the death cab parts were so silly. i hate them too.
Score = 0
There is nothing wrong with the whole deathcab/postal service/bright eyes music scene.
I can get why ppl might not like them, but 'hate' them?!?
It's all good stuff and a shitload better than a lot of the music out there today.
*fully expects this thread to turn into an indie-yuppie-emo-geek-hate-a-thon*

to this day, I have only ever heard one Death Cab song. It sounded like Foreigner to me.

ya i dont hate them they are just boring to me...

Foreigner on the other hand...

I'm angry about how expensive Lollapalooza tickets are. So part of me is angry at Death Cab for Cutie. ROWR.

It's just all so...mediocre. How can you champion mediocre?
I hate mediocre.
Score = 0
the funniest thing about that show is that the "cool jocks" are on the water polo team. OC high doesn't have a football, soccer, or baseball team... just water polo.
Score = 0
They do have soccer... Ryan tried out for the team when he first came to Harbor and then got kicked off for doing and illegal slide-tackle on Marissa's ex-boyfriend Luke.
Wait... I mean... Yeah, it's weird that they only have a water-polo team... huh.

Love Summer. She is fab.
I had never actually seen the Death Cab boys before last night. Didn't realize how dorky they were, and not in a good way.
Score = 0
I just loved all the Silverlake hipster references in last nights episdode. Damn wine drinking board game playing hipster types.

Thank you for leaving that first comment, Seymour. That's the hardest I've laughed all goddamn day.

Death Cab is for poseurs. The OC as well for that matter.

Calling people poseurs is for poseurs.

I am so pissed I missed the O.C. last night! Can someone give me a synopsis?
Score = 0
It's simple, Death Cab is completely boring, which is why they suck. I've been to a show, and I still cannot understand what everyone sees in them. I find their music to be so unbelievably tepid and bland, certainly nothing to get excited over. It's like they are too "emo" and "sensitive" to just pull their balls out and rock, so instead they write these wordy "no one understands me so I wear ironic glasses" songs that strangely appeal to 17 year old pussies that write 'zines.
Score = 0
"Wordy 'no one understands me so I wear ironic glasses'" songs are sometimes well-written and never inscrutable...which is kind of a nice change of pace after hearing "I'm gonna use my teeth and my breasts..." too much. And good drums, I like Death Cab's drums.
Score = 0
there is nothing boring about deathcab. im not a big fan of that genre but i recently bought their album and was blown away.

you people are anyoing. ben gibbard ( the lead singer of d. cab, postal service, all-time quarterback, and home volume 5) is amazing. do you really hate d. cab? c'mon lets be fair here.
Score = 0
you know, it is so easy for people to say what they hate. Especially when noisy dancy attitude music is so "in" and it is so vogue to bash anything that isn't that. like death cab. well why don't one of you "i hate death cab" or "i hate bright eyes" people let us know what you do like. Or are you just to cool for that.
p.s. this isn't in defense of death cab i am just pointing out an annoying trend.
p.p.s. bloc party fucking blows...there i said it...it is about time somebody did
Score = 0
you know what, while i am on the bloc party thing let me say my piece and be done....
does anyone remember the rapture? if bloc party were a school paper, the kids (or in this case 4 kids) that wrote it would get F's for looking up dance punk in the dictionary and simply rearranging the passage that followed
hey at least i didn't take the easy way out and just say "i hate bloc party"
now everyone feel free to go back to talking about death cab or whatever
Score = 0
I liked the double Seattle shout out -- the super annoying comics marketing guy was from Fantagraphics. But, I guess that wasn't necessarily a good reference.
Best line of the episode: "I mean where other than the Bait Shop are tickets always plentiful and the band never too loud to talk over? Cohen is missing it!" (Summer)

Does anybody here even know where "Death Cab" got their name? I'm guessing no. I do.

Billy K, how did they get their name?
I actually like the band and am legitamately curious.

death cab for cutie got their name from a song in the movie Yellow Submarine. it was the only song in the movie not done by the Beatles.
Score = 0
no, it was magical mystery tour. and it was the beatles in diguise.
in orange county, the water polo guys ARE the cool jocks.
death cab is so summer 2000. seth cohen should have already seen them at least ONCE.
Score = 0
didn't they already see death cab before when anna (oh-so cute samarie armstrong!!) was a character in season 1? i recall her & seth having a keen adoration for them and stating that they both saw them (on separate occasions.)
Score = 0
actually their name came from a hard days night. in a joking sentence paul says the words "death cab for cutie"
Score = 0
it is hilarious to me that the same people who want to call out "indie-yuppies" are having this lame argument about deathcab, the oc and water-polo. seth totally should've already seen them years ago and your hating on the band in 2005 when they are so over is gay.
Score = 0
adam brody is right, bloc party does not blow, and everyone knows zack is trying to fuck seth's shit up, royally...just love what you love and hate on what you hate out loud, so we can get in online arguments that spill over into some gangsta shit.

must be behind on the oc...when do death cab play the bait shop???
death cab for cutie...by far the weirdest band name ive heard...

Everyone please listen to Adam Brody. He makes perfect sense.

adam brody should do a guest spot on gilmore girls... that would be nice..

Death Cab - I downloaded some of their songs once. Haven't listened to them again. No hate here; they just don't light my fire. It doesn't help that a band these days doesn't have a chance to grow. As soon as a band gets a little following, they explode, and the hype gets overblown quickly. Not false hype per se but the new kind of hype made of millions of internet people simultaneously talking something up. The hyperbole gets pretty rich.
Mostly, though, most of the bands I hear of this i.y. style are just plain mediocre. There's no spark to their stuff, and IMO if you can't rock, then you better play me some great songs. Most of these bands can get the "sound" mastered but can't come up with songs that are worth recording. Death Cab left me with that impression.
Never seen the O.C.

Joel, your point is understood and often accurate. But in the case of DCFC probably not. This band has been around for nearly 8 years, has produced 5 full albums and 4 EPs, and until 6 months ago did all of their work on Barsuk records. Barsuk is one of the very few truly independent labels; DCFC has thus enjoyed the ability to make music to their own ideals without the pressure of major label executives or the need to sell millions of units. Many people consider Gibbard to be a very talented songwriter. The band may be getting hyped right now because their 'sound' is hot at the moment but they've been honing their voice since 1997 and one of the reasons this particular sound is hot right now is due to the body of work they've produced over the last 8 years and the growing group of music lovers who appreciate it.
Not that you need to love this band, of course you don't.
BTW, you've got a pretty entertaining blog and seeing that you were touched by the Hopkins Green Frog story you're probably a pretty decent person.

thanks for the info, sparedog. Your words might inspire a second listen.

The name comes from a Gorky's Zycotic Mynci song.
I wins! Put me up for 5 points on the big Indie Cred board. Oh wait. It doesn't exist!
Chill out, DCFC aren't the greatest band to ever grace us with their presence, but they're definitley listenable, even likable. The live show can be a real bore, but I'm a proud owner of everything they've ever put out. No shame.

Ben Gibbard has a girl ass...and he depends on a slowed tempo and over-layered sounds to show how heartfelt his kitschy lyrics are. And doesn't anyone get annoyed with how much Chris Walla guest spots in "indie" music magazines (this month's Under the Radar) with his little articles and his emo-combover hair? I don't hate Death Cab, but I certainly don't promote mediocre music.

I think music taste is subjective, but I could be wrong. I think Death Cab has a problem writing compelling melodies. They sound more like a soundtrack to a lifestyle to me than to pop music that I can really get into. But that's the case with at least 75% of current music. I think the stuff that gets remembered is the stuff that least sounds like background coolness. I don't know. I'm not bitter about them because they have worked really hard and it's great that any indie rock band can make a living, and hell, I've only heard one full song and snippets a a few others, but they ain't that interesting to me, and I don't think they've got anything like a genius in the band.

Oh wait, it looks like they already do.

I bet dudes in bands are all like "EJ is the worst blog commenter ever. What an overrated douche," or "Come on dude, don't hate, Mikee is a pretty good commenter, it's not his fault he got all big."
Oh wait they're probably busy doing something with their lives. Never mind.

What are you like 12??! Wait sorry that's an insult to preteens everywhere.

ROFL, riiiiight. Dudes in bands are like, "Will you please review this CD by my band?" And I'm like, "OK sure. I'll listen to it and if I like it I will review it."
When they say, "Our main influence is Death Cab For Cutie," that's when I say, "Nevermind."

Oh, a music critic. Sorry, I didn't realize how incredibly important your opinion was. I'm sure guys in bands would kill to have their records reviewed by some mouth-breather who thinks "nevermind" is one word.

Here's my opinion....Death Cab for Cutie is a very good band. I remember thinking "what's the big deal?" after my first listen, but you've gotta do more than listen to 2 or 3 songs or you probably will write it off as pussy emo shit. And yeah, there's a lot of buzz about these guys, and yeah, they left Barsuk for major-label Atlantic, but this doesn't mean they have been donned the greatest band in the world! They still play venues with capacities of 1000. Ben Gibbard is a true talent and whether or not you like him is totally your opinion, however, saying they suck balls and Gibbard can't write songs is simply idiotic. It's time to stop worrying about what other people think or say and like music just because YOU like it. If it makes you feel good than that's all you need. Don't worry about who is popular, who is indie, or who is an Emo yuppie. Just do your own thing and don't give a fuck about what Seth Cohen listens to. He may like Death Cab, but he's not even a real guy...he's a character!

"Death Cab" sucks .... Does anyone know what the lyrics to the 'popular song' (soul meets body) are about???? I mean -- maybe the rest of their songs suck, I downloaded a couple besides that one and they seemed fairly lame. Further, I normally dislike "popular" music being an oldtime fan of the 80s goth genre and industrial (fuck I saw KMFDM when you people were likely in diapers). Anyway -- back in the days before "Lala palooza" or whatever, we had rocking shows, where like the Sisters of Mercy, Front 242, etc., played... but I digress....
Point is, that song specifically discusses gnosticism -- and if you type in "nishimta" and "ruha" into google you may discover something more profound.
Irregardless of your shallow feelings about particular bands or songs, dig a little deeper emo freaks.
Fraternally,
Nishimta
