The fact that neither of us have heard any of RS's top fitty is really telling. What is going on in this industry? Oh yeah, RS sold out to the man years ago. But I feel bad for music lovers who read it and are looking for RS to turn them onto good new music. RS is truly an embarassment. Of course the rolling stones and prince albums are going to be amazing and I love them as much as the next guy... but there is nothing new about any of the albums on that list and that should definately have been a large factor for consideration.

Colin Meloy of the Decemberists probably emailed stereogum about it. Colin wote about it at the decemberists message board.

The brandy disc is her best ever - thought it sticks to her formula - Brandy's disaffected voice singing confessional lyrics over ice cold Timbaland beats. Then there's one killer Kanye-produced track.
So so bummed I missed the Decemberists mp3s. wah!

Astonishing that they would choose Clapton's uninspired and uninteresting record of Robert Johnson covers. Clapton's renditions of the old Delta bluesman's tunes were lifeless - even when compared to other group's covers of the same songs. I can't imagine why they selected that record. I suppose the editors have to remind everyone that they know who Robert Johnson is.

Wait a minute -- is this list from one of those readers' polls they do? (Readers' polls are never a good idea, since only idiots ever vote on them; taking the results as a serious reflection of what their readers like -- and then pandering to that -- is probably what ruined RS.)

"does anybody know of a decent music mag?"

MOJO is pretty much what Rolling Stone always should have been.

"I think the Brandy record is totally solid."

Here's the thing: Isn't Rolling Stone supposed to be a rock & roll magazine? What does it say about their credibility when the only album on their list that is even remotely worth hearing isn't even a rock album?

I just barfed a little more.

Rolling Stone WAS a music magazine, from what I gathered by reading my parents' old RS back issues from the 80's. You look through an issue now, and for the most part, it's 'Teen Beat' with swear words.
So yes, Q, Mojo, and Classic Rock are the best music mags. And to a (much) lesser extent: Blender.

The Mrs Springsteen album actually isn't a bad album at all as is the Prince album.

Maybe Eric Clapton's 28 year old wife is sucking the creativity out of him!? Clapton hasn't done anything exciting since Cream, IMHO. Add him to one of the artists that can release an album of themselves farting and it still would wow the critics and be nominated for many grammies!

K, its offical Rolling Stone has lost what little relevance and credibility that it had....I just was on the website and I noticed that they named Paris Hilton one of the people of the year, she's one of the people of the year along side of Howard Dean and Barack Obama!!???

This is the copy that starts off the article...
Let's be frank. 2004 wasn't America's finest year, what with the war in Iraq and Britney's marital woes. Thankfully, a few stars shone through. There's the action hero turned governor, the producer turned chart topper and a pair of pop-tart party girls. A real news anchor and a fake news anchor. New kids on the block and legends who've been with us for decades but manage to keep us guessing.

News flash to Jann Wenner and to quote an episode of South Park.....People like Paris Hilton shouldn't be admired they should be despised and look down upon.

    Seriously WTF?!

music mags: i like 'under the radar': tons of reviews of good and interesting bands that stereogum readers esp might dig . . .

and if you're feeling pretentious/eggheadish, then you can't lose with 'wire.'

in my opinion, Q teeters into RS territory rather often. some of my british friends say it's what their dad reads, which is why they dont. though it's not nearly as bad as RS, of course . . . not so much focus on pop culture bullshit. and it's funnier. but still not the best. NME is alright, but i hate how they pick a patron saint of the moment and bombard you with pics, no-news news snippets about them . . . very teenbeat really.

"NME is alright, but i hate how they pick a patron saint of the moment and bombard you with pics, no-news news snippets about them"

And then like a month later, they decide same patron saint is the devil incarnate and tear 'em down. NME is like a catty cheerleader that way.

I always liked CMJ, the monthly CD is always a treat. But now that I'm old, I don't have the time to get through all that density. MOJO is totally the New Yorker of music mags. If you like the cover subject, definitely buy and read it. Even if you aren't that interested, you'll get sucked into reading about Led Zeppelin's obsession with the occult or the "Exile on Main Street" recording sessions or whatever. Good reviews section; a mix of genres, plus reissues. I should really pony up for a subscription.

While I'm very surprised to see Phish's album "Undermind" on the list of top albums, I will say that “Undermind” is one of the best Phish studio albums. It is defiantly their most accessible and “commercially friendly” albums, featuring one of their most “radio friendly” songs, “The Connection”. Unlike many, I prefer Phish studio albums like this. (i.e. “Farmhouse”). Phish realized that they can never replicate what they do on stage in the studio, so they started just concentrating on making solid albums with improved song writing. Most fans have frowned on the last few Phish albums, but I think they were just starting to get it right.

Of course, I'm sure the real reason “Undermind” made the list because Phish broke up this year, just weeks before this album was released.

Both the Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson albums are good. Not everybody can listen to poseur crybaby britrock and enjoy it. I for one am glad RS covers a broader range of music in their top whatever list than what you're apparently looking for, namely the top 10 eurotrash albums of the year.

this is not to say that I read or enjoy RS. I just think its fucking bullshit to expect them to only cover one genre of music.

The Journal of Domestic Violence & Nascar Afficianos also named the Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson Albums among their years' favorites. RS can sure pick em.'

I like some of the British Music Mags, but it seems that every month they are proclaiming some new "best band of the last 10 years" or "The Next Nirvana" and hyping up these new rock revivalists that really aren't worth the hype. (see the Vines, The Music, etc...) I tend to read those mags, (Q, Mojo) Strictly for the articles. I also like No Depression, although it tends to lean towards alt-country/ Americana. As far as reviews, I really rely on the web for those. The only ones I really take seriously are pitchfork, Buddyhead, Vice, and this site, as well as reccomendations from friends.

nme is worse than rolling stone. their entire collective taste and decision about who to hype up is based on some fickle fashion trends they've made up for themselves. not to mention that the writing itself is mostly incredibly inane and unfunny hyperbolic crap.

yeah, so rolling stone hype up people like clapton and velvet revolver no matter what they release. but nme mostly just hype up equally bad (but trendier) assbackwards retrotarded fools who all look, dress and sound the same. dull as dishwater shit like razorlight and jet that rolling stone covers anyway but with slightly more restraint and sanity. and rolling stone does not have nme's diabolically irritating penchant for corny novelty acts with extremely short shelf lives like andrew wk and so solid crew.

    Velvet Revolver Contraband
which, shamefully, i purchased but what about the 50 others they didn't even bring to light.

they need to stop the lists!1!! Top 100 albums of all time!?!? according to who? some white bearded all smoked out hippie in the mountains of No. Cal chillin with his macrame owls hangin in his log shack cabin
