Band Of Horses' Cease To Begin Album Art

Rev up the reverb and put away the digicams: Band Of Horses are back this fall with Sub Pop LP2 Cease To Begin. Returning for production duty is the mighty Phil Ek, who will guide the relocated-to-South-Carolina rockers through the new. Zach Galifianakis hosted the boys recently at Hiro Ballroom (complete with art auction appetizer), where BoH unleashed some relatively straight ahead, punchy tunes to the delight of the Velvet Elvis cocktail-fed crowd. Cease's being billed as the band's "southeast record," though by the artwork, it looks more like it's their midnight at the waterfront album: same font, crescent moon, majestically dark 'n' broody. Graphic designers may enjoy analyzing, though we're more interested in yer psycho-symbolic assessment.

Cease To Begin is out 10/9 on Sub Pop.

It's an adaptation of the South Carolina state flag, which consists of a crescent moon and palmetto tree on indigo cloth, as can be seen here:

Right - the cloud represents the palmetto fronds and the reflection in the water is the trunk.

Here's a pic of a real palmetto:

The band now lives in the 'burbs of Charleston, SC . . .

I see a cross, vaguely. Although the Palmetto thing seems fair.

It looks to me like Jimmy Buffet went to his "dark place" and took a picture with his sunglasses over the viewfinder, bro.

I remember reading in their Pitchfork interview they planned on adapting the SC flag for the next album's cover.

This adaptation isn't at all what I was expecting; it's really impressive and subtle. Great going guys! As a SC native, I'm so glad these dudes are living in and loving on my state.

I thought the South Carolina State Flag also had a rebel flag in it.

This looks like the cover to a Nightwish record.

The question is whether there will be 1 good song on this record that people might like, try to take pictures or sing along to during the song, and then really upset their douchebag singer. Poor guy, I doubt he'll have to worry about it.

This also reminds me of the cover for the Bouncing Souls album Ancors Aweigh:

I lived in Savannah, GA for the last year and considered Everything All the Time my Savannah album. The cover was basically how my street looked with the overhanging trees and such and then they namedrop Savannah and Carolina in a song, but this next one is going to be the "southeast record"?

And as a UGA alum, I am glad to know these boys are Dawg fans. Oh college...
