New Regina Spektor - "Laughing With"
![]()
I never would've taken Regina Spektor for someone to revel in fart jokes, but I suppose she is the one who told us we don't know her at all (that's really bad). But over at her MySpace, in a post from yesterday titled "far(t)," she gives the update on her new album Far, along with the correct album art. It seems the wrong art the other day, which has somehow set off all this flatulence:
Sorry bout the new cover mix up. We had a million comps, ideas, and we posted the wrong ones... everything is like a kaleidoscope... i'm giving up trying to make things perfect, because they never are... i bet my record comes out called "Fart"... i kind of hope it... i've kind of wanted it to be called fart for a while... ever since i named it far, i wished it was fart...but you don't need to worry bout all that. I think the cover is right now... and i know that any day now my new song "Laughing With" will be up... We will put it in the player here, and get it out into the world... It's a new song that i never played for people at shows before...
"Laughing With" is up now, and it's no laughing matter. (Thanks for the tip, Matthew.) Take a listen then take a closer look at the album art and tracklist:
01 "The Calculation"
02 "Eet"
03 "Blue Lips"
04 "Folding Chair"
05 "Machine"
06 "Laughing With"
07 "Human Of The Year"
08 "Two Birds"
09 "Dance Anthem"
10 "Genius Next Door"
11 "Wallet"
12 "One More Time With Feeling"
13 "Man Of A Thousand Faces"
Far is out 6/23 via Sire.

You know how in your Seventh Grade English class, there was a student teacher named Sophia that you kinda bonded with? She had messy hair, wore converse high tops, and even though she was an adult, she didn't seem that much older than you. She was smart, but she didn't play by the rules like everyone else. She even rolled her eyes at some of the nuttier things Mrs. Gutierrez said. You know how, in one of your between-period conversations, you found out that she was an aspiring singer-songwriter? And that she had a show in a couple of weeks at a local cafe called "The Sipping Point"? You remember how you told your parents you were going over to Jared's house to play GoldenEye, but you really went to that cafe to Sophia play, and how she was so surprised to see you. You remember that show right? She opened with a cover of a song you'd never heard before, which you later found out was "Don't Think Twice" by Bob Dylan? You remember how, after the show, you bought one of her CDs, and how you taped the album cover to your wall, and how you took it with you on your family's summer vacation to Seattle, and how you listened to it on your discman late at night? And how amazing it was that someone you knew had a real live CD? And how amazing it was? When you got back next year of course Sophia was gone. You remember how you even asked Mrs. Gutierrez what she happened to her, and how Mrs. Gutierrez just shrugged her shoulders and said something about Sophia moving to the city? You remember how you had all those fantasies about hearing a song on the radio by Sophia that was named after you? You remember how, years later, when you were in college and had forgotten all about Sophia, on the winter break of your senior year, you were going through some stuff and you found that old CD? And you remember how, with your newfound cultural awareness, you realized how bad the music was? And how it made you doubly sad, because even though Sophia was a cherished memory, you realize that if you met her now, you would probably think nothing of her at best, at worst openly mock her, and you realized that the price you had paid for you cultural awareness was a certain degree of cynicism? And you remember how you had been so impressed by the fact that Sophia had a CD when you were a kid, but now you realized it was just a burned-CDR in plastic jewel case bought at Office Depot, and the cover was just a color photocopy of an insipid and clumsy illustration? That's kinda what this looks like to me.

My mailman made a CD, and when I was a kid I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It was called "Ready to Snap". I'm not joking.

That's hilarious. "Ready to Snap"

I'm pretty sure this album isn't on a CDR..

you remember that one time I sucker-punched you because you thought it was so cool to speak only in question form?

Laughing With is AMAZING!!!! i've been listening to it on repeat since yesterday night :)
can't wait for far(t) to come out. there'll be four (not including LW) new songs. FOUR!! i'm soooo happy right now.

Let me reiterate. The cover looks bad.

I agree that the cover kinda sucks, and that the song is really good.
Score = 1
the cover art is good and the song kinda sucks

Love the cover. The song is fine, but not nearly as interesting as some of her previous stuff and not enough to get me excited for this new album. I hope this album brings back more of the quirky Regina from 11:11 that seemed to be missing from Begin to Hope.

The tracklist on this is amazing! Anyone who hasn't already heard live recordings of "Human of the Year" and "Man of a Thousand Faces" should do so immediately.

Nothing wrong with the cover; nothing wrong with the song. But neither blow me away.
I'll take my Soviet Kitsch

Regina Spektor used to be my favourite artist in the world. I continue to hold hope that she'll ditch the horrible backing band and go back to making things like 'Lacrimosa'.

I don't know, I kinda liked that little ditty by taste. Maybe it's just me, though. Probably, it's just me.

We're gonna go listen to Tori Amos, thanks.
