New Rilo Kiley - "Silver Lining" (And Under The Blacklight Album Art) - Stereogum Premiere

Still weeks off from getting the full Under The Blacklight platter from Rilo, but there's a "Silver Lining" to ease the anticipation. Considerably less porno-funky than "The Moneymaker" -- in fact it's a slice of sugary '60s soul by comparison -- the hook's got Jenny in love and cheering like a metaphorical metallurgist: "Hooray hooray ... I'm your silver lining/Hooray hooray ... but now I'm gold." Cue the old school synths, the drums-and-vocal breakdown, the triangle?! Yep it's a throwback sugar-pop confection, recasting Jenny as the girl you're dying to bring home to mama.

Rilo Kiley - "Silver Lining"

Under The Blacklight is out 8/21 on Warner. Below, the Rilo cover.

Wow, it appears to me more and more over time that this record is going to suck so much.

What we need is another Elected album.

i'm pretty sure that jenny/blake diverting their country tendencies to side projects was the worst thing that could've possibly happened to rilo kiley.

Wow, way to base an opinion off of two songs. And for the record, "The Moneymaker" is a kick-ass song. I will admit that it sounds nothing like the Rilo Kiley stuff of past records, but it is still a great song. "Silver Lining" didn't make me turn my head or anything, but neither did the first run through of Kings of Leon's album, Because of The Times, and now I cannot stop listening to it.

And the last thing we need is another Elected album. Blake and Jenny sound best writing and singing in the same band.

With my love for RK, The Moneymaker left me depressed that this album wouldn't remotely measure up. Glad to hear this one, gives me hope again.

I have no real issues with this song. Doesn't exactly blow me away (only one or two on every RK album do), but it's solid. Pretty soulful, too (although it may or may not be painfully obvious that I don't listen to soul music either).

soul? uhhhh....?

if anything, this ENTIRE album lends itself to 60s pop comparisons -- it's poppy as hell.

but honestly, i think the kiley's have just abandoned any sort of seriousness on this album. it almost sounds like one big joke to me -- jenny sings one song chorus in SPANISH. other songs are jangly pop numbers about "doing the smoke detector" and how she was "smoking" some guy in bed. "breaking up" is as pop/dance-produced as anything i've heard come out of Scandinavia - the chorus is "ooooh, it feels good to be free". and that sums up this whole album for me. they're not rilo kiley -- they're a bunch of people who have solo projects who got together to record one last album (i honestly swear this HAS to be it -- did anyone else get that vibe from the Filter article?)

anyway, somehow this is turning into my own blog entry...

While this song sounds nothing like their old stuff, that doesn't make it bad. I quite like this song and "The Moneymaker", and I am a huge fan of all of Rilo Kiley's music, from Initial Friend to More Adventurous. Just because they're exploring new ways to express themselves and new sounds doesn't mean that it sounds worse - in fact, I think it's great that they are all willing to do something different with their music. There's nothing wrong with Rilo adopting a more poppy sound.

What really annoys me is when fans cannot accept when their favorite bands continue to evolve and experiment as artists. None of Rilo Kiley's albums have been like any of the others. Rilo Kiley was and still is an extremely talented group, and their willingness to try new things attests to their versatility.

This song rocks, and Rilo Kiley is still amazing. Every band deserves a chance to experiment with their sound. Yes, this and the other song are different from the music on their previous albums, but it isn't as if they are trying to fit in to what is currently popular.

No. I have seen them 3 times. I love almost everything else they have done, regardless of the artisitic leaps and shifting genres. This is one of my fav bands. Both these songs just plain suck. She sounds bored, and uninspired. I think it is classic crossover from indie spirit to real-world drudgery. Marketing, sales figures, tour dates, bottom line, videos, mtv. It happens to the best of them, if they cross over to the other side. Think about it, U2 and Green Day were both great bands.... once. I have tickets to the Orlando show. I hope the other songs are worth the $50 for two tickets I paid. A night of this would depress the hell out of me...

There are a few people who need to get a life. Only an absolute prat, or a studio executive, can listen to song once or twice and make a judgement. And we all know how good those studios executives are! Wilco's yankee hotel foxtrot was released to critical acclaim only after Warner dropped it.

Really looking forward to the Aussie release!

I honestly like this song. Clearly, I'm in the minority. For me, this is simply a catchy little pop tune, and that's good enough. Lord knows they've always been good at that.

If you don't like the song because of how it sounds or what it's expressing, that's fine. But if the reason you don't like it is because it's not living up to your idea of what RK or Jenny should be, then fuck you. They're not going to do More Adventurous, Part 2. That was 3 years ago. Move the fuck on. Like the sensible people on here have said, RK has evolved with every album. I'm just enjoying the ride.

Whether you love it or hate it or something in between, the group's music is always changing. If you don't like the two songs that have been posted on Stereogum, maybe some of the other songs will do it for you. This album is shaping up to be fairly incoherent, which could be either a good or a bad thing. Or you'll just have to wait until the next album, when the group has moved on to other styles.

To whomever said we need a new album by The Elected, you obviously don't need instructions to know how to rock.

Just because Rilo Kiley is changing their sound doesn't mean that they suck all of a sudden. It means that they are talented musicians that are versatile and ever changing. Why would we want the same sound every album? I'm happy to hear a new side of RK. This song beautifully showcases Jenny's luscious voice.

this sounds more like a song off of Jenny's album with the Watson twins. I love that album but I guess not all Rilo Kiley fans are familiar with it nor like that sound. But like someone else said in an earlier post, sometimes when you listen to the album later on you find that you like the music much more than when you first heard it.

Originally by Andrew: "Just because Rilo Kiley is changing their sound doesn't mean that they suck all of a sudden."

no, it sucks that they changed their sound to mediocre VH1-drivel bullshit.

"It means that they are talented musicians that are versatile and ever changing."

however, this song does NOT display their full potential and talent they displayed in their past albums.

"Why would we want the same sound every album?"

nobody was suggesting having all their albums sounding the same. however, nobody was suggesting having their new album sounding like shit.

"I'm happy to hear a new side of RK. This song beautifully showcases Jenny's luscious voice."

too bad Jenny sound too much like jewel on this song.

i keep saying this. i'm all for every artist i like trying to grow and evolve to bigger and better places, even if it means that they take their sound in a completely different direction. but in order for the products of this change to be well-executed, the product must be good. in my opinion, the songs we've heard so far are not good because things such as lyrics, music, writing, delivery, and production i simply find to be poor. kudos to rilo kiley for trying to spread thier wings. it's too bad it appears they can't/didn't pull it off.

and why are people so offended when others compare this effort to previous works? of course people are going to do that. it's not necessarily an "i only want rilo to sound alt-country or twee poppy," statement. maybe it's just, "with this previous album rilo kiley's efforts produced a great work, and i feel this new album does not live up to what they are clearly capable of."

ditto deebag & claire. i love RK and i definitely don't mind them changing their sound. i've stuck with their side projects even though i don't think it's necessarily as great. i just don't think they changed for the better in this case.

it would suck if they decided to go their separate ways and have this be their exit (granted the other 8 songs could be fantastic, but so far it doesn't look promising).

i actually like this song, and the direction the album seems to be going. i think people think that a band to stick to a certain type of theme, and yes rilo kiley uses a lot of dark humor i suppose. sometimes its the things that happen in life that changes people's outlook. or sometimes its just time for a change, and i think people fear that, and dislike it. i like it all around. and i love jenny lewis and blake sennet.

lol @ anyone thinking The Moneymaker is a good song. That song is so bad it literally blew me away. it is one of the worst singles by a band I really like ever. What does it have, 8 total words in the entire song? It's so so so awful.

You can claim you don't like the band's new direction or you do, but the fact remains these two songs simply aren't that good. Silver Lining is ten times better than The Moneymaker, but 10 times negative 8 million still isn't that good. It's a pretty average uninteresting song. And the backup singers during the chorus are pretty awful too. Still better than that awful, awful Moneymaker song though.

Oh, I'm sure most of the people complaining about "Silver Lining" about pissed themselves with excitement when Jenny and the Watsons stood around one mic and sang "I Met Him On Sunday."

Come now. "I never felt so wicked as when I willed our love to die." That's so very Jenny.

I wish she dug into the vocals earlier though, because the end is leaning towards awesome but the rest is a little dry.

i'm totally agreeing with keenan up there. if you listen to any of the rilo albums, they are ALL different. no one album sounds like the next, and any artist with talent should be evolving constantly. if this state of evolution in their growth as artists doesn't appeal to you, then onto the next one.
i remember when jenny's solo album first came out and i got some leaked songs before the release. my initial reaction was, WTF. but it totally became one of my favorite albums. i know a lot of us love rilo, the elected, and jenny solo because of the alt country slant or the amazing lyrics, which i will admit (thus far) i haven't heard on this new album. but i am betting it will grow on a lot of us, mainly because they're so talented something has to be good! on the downside, i knew that WB signing would kick in at some point, and you know what, they deserve to earn a little money after all their hard work, so i'll give them this one!
in other news, which Filter article are you guys referring to? i can't imagine them breaking up because they have such amazing history, but it must also be weird to be back after going it alone on the part of blake and jenny for a while. but hey, the other members toured with them too, so they weren't really alone. i have faith that they are talented enough to handle both the solo and group efforts into the future. though, i do find it funny that when they exhaust their folk tendencies solo, they come back together and do a complete 180. gotta love rilo, ever evolving. that's worth something huh?
in conclusion, to you naysayers i say "give it a chance." it's hard when you want more of a great thing (past albums) but trust them, they're RILO! jenny, blake, de reeder, boesel (now bloom?)... they wouldn't let us down. they're just opening our eyes. and i do sense a bit of comic irony/social commentary in their album... think about it.

I am... not sure what to think. On the one hand, Rilo Kiley is one of my favourite bands ever and I want to stick by their sides and defend them because I really do have a lot of respect for them. But on the other hand, I do miss the lack of good lyrics (cf. "The Moneymaker") and sarcasm and just... feelings. So far what I've heard won't make me cry like "Picture of Success" or "All the good" do when I'm feeling down. And if this is one of the reasons why I love RK so much - I *feel* their music.

Still, being more of a Paul than a John most of the time, I do like the poppy tune of "Silver Lining". :)

The songs aren't bad, but they're not very original either. The lyrics are lagging, too, and there's no heart in when she sings. I think Jenny and Blake can and have written much better than this.

Quite disapointing.... It's a real shame.

I've been raving about the band for ages to all my friends, and if they hear the newer Rilo stuff I'm just going to be embarrassed!

haha... all of our comments are cracking me up, and i totally agree with all of you, good and bad. i think the coolest thing about rilo is that they have such dedicated fans... we all love them, are slightly thrown off my the moneymaker, find hope in the silver lining, and are just reminiscent of a time past when their lyrics and sound touched all of us. overall though, we love them so much and will totally stick by them, even if we're sad with the new stuff. i think that says a lot of the band, and the power they have. i'd follow them anywhere... i guess they can stand to rest on their laurels for a bit.

Between reading the recent Filter magazine interview with Blake and Jenny, and listening to the two first releases I have come to this conclusion: Rilo Kiley phoned this album in. Your money might be used elsewhere. If you're really intent on giving your money to Rilo Kiley, buy a friend a copy of a prior album or solo project, or donate your money to a charity in Rilo Kiley's name.

I agree with the "phoned in" above. "New Direction" and Loyalists aside, can or does this music stand on its own creatively or commercially? The answer is obviously no. Regardless of the direction they were trying to go, they failed at both.

"Phoned it in"?

let's see you pick up a guitar and record an album that sounds 10% as good. If you don't like their music go listen to the white stripes or something.

all that "phoned it in" is suggesting is that they really could have tried a little harder than it sounds like they did. I'm sure he couldn't win a thumb twiddling contest to save his life, but yes, I have to agree that it does sound like RK lacked any real creative inspiration here. I'll wait to hear the full album and decide then, but at the moment, i don't think i'm going to be surprised.

It's love hate for me.

On the one hand, these songs don't carry the lyrical weight or relevance of any previous Rilo Kiley efforts - and I'm disappointed about it. Plus, like one other commenter said, where's the cynicism? Where's all the complicated bittersweet emotion?

On the other hand, I can't get either of these songs out of my head, and Jenny can really really sing now. I guess I wouldn't have wanted them to make another album exactly like More Adventurous...I just hope there's at least one song on Blacklight that evokes the same feelings in me as nearly the entire previous album did.

At first I didn't like this song very much at all. I still think it could easily be a Jenny Lewis solo song.

HOWEVER. On first listen, I didn't even like More Adventurous because it was too different from Takeoffs and Landings, or Execution of All Things. Now More Adventurous is right up there in my favourites - and I keep listening to Silver Lining over and over. It's growing on me and I officially like it a lot.

Try not to be so upset by the new direction Rilo Kiley the band is going in, and if you can, simply enjoy the songs for exactly what they are.

Quit your bitching, Rilo Kiley is an amazing band with amazing work. If you're on this page you obviously are a big fan, so how about fucking supporting them. They want to experiment with new stuff, more power to them. They're artists, that's what they're supposed to do. This song and 'The Moneymaker' are great, and I'm sure the rest of the new album will be too.

Stop insulting them, they're amazing...always have, always will be.

Great song? Did someone actually call The Moneymaker a GREAT song? Jenny can write better lyrics while dropping a deuce-- it's as if they either didn't try, or tried really, really hard to write the worst and slickest song in the Rilo Kiley catalog. In which case, they succeeded.

Silver Lining isn't great, but at least it sounds like they put more than 3 minutes into writing it.

Neither of the songs I've heard feel as charming as the last Rilo Kiley stuff. I like those quirky moments/songs/lyrics much more than than this. The songs seem easy to listen to but don't feel as heartfelt or as genuine. I absolutely hate the bridge in Moneymaker, though it is short, and really dislike the chorus of this one. I think it's fine that Blake wanted to Robert Palmer it up for Moneymaker, but there's not really any denying that these two songs are atrocious. The fact that the best anyone is saying on their behalf is "they may grow on you" bodes oh-so hideously unwell. This new one is just bad Rabbit Fur Coat with a cool guitar lick.

And I have to agree with whoever said that the recent string of letdown follow-ups most definitely continued with Bjork's piece of shit latest.

All that said, RK already gave us the official requisite amount of brilliant songs to be worthy of being let off without much disappointment. Nothing lasts forever.

Saying nothing about this "direction" of the band, on the most basic and fundamental level, The Moneymaker is a very, very bad/uninteresting song. I don't care if RK turns into a Dirty South Crunk band, but if they release a song like the Moneymaker, I'm going to say it sucks. It doesn't matter the style. I like all styles. I like good music. I don't like bad music. That is bad music.

Silver lining is better, but still really hokey. It's ok, not that great though. I hope the rest of the album is better, but it isn't looking that way. Some of you diehard people need to take off your blinders and accept the two songs for what they are.

Rilo Kiley may be one of many bands who put out a lot of good records and then boom, they fall flat. I've heard a few songs and again, I am totally unimpressed. This is a band with real talent and it seems like they are just pissing it away. Anything that sounds so overproduced makes me think they got poor direction, are bored with writing music, or maybe they want to go off and do other projects.

The whole point of a blog is for all of us to speak up and say what we think. Clearly we are big fans of RK and music in general or we would not be here.

Wow. This is truly mediocre. How disappointing. I think the worst part is the production on this song--Jenny sounds like Jewel on it. I do love this band, but if this is a sample of the sound of the next album, I'll probably skip it. I like the rawness of their other records, and this is kind of the opposite of that. (I will still see them live though.)

I don't even see how Moneymaker isn't their 'sound'. The first thing I thought of was how 'them' it was, and then about how great it would be to be in a porn with jenny lewis. Silverlining is perfect, dreamworld reminds me of when Blake used to sing, and that is exciting! Get happy, hipsters.

Honestly, If they are making music you don't like, don't buy their albums. But don't knock someone's art, just because it doesn't meet YOUR standards. I personally enjoy Jenny Lewis's solo stuff and Blakes, and like to see them working together as well. I think it is pretty shitty that people can call themselves a fan of a certian band and trash them in the same breath. People are pissed bc Rilo Kiley moved to a major record lable like WB. So what. That doesnt influence the words or style of the music. Jenny and Blake are going to sing/play what they feel reguardless of side projects or a new record lable. And most of you people have only heard two songs from "Under the Black Light". Give them a chance. People need to accept change and stop trashing a band that they supposedly love. And on the song. I think it's beautifull, Jenny could sing a song about a piece of shit lieing on the side walk and make it beautiful. Can't wait to hear more!

"People are pissed bc Rilo Kiley moved to a major record lable like WB. So what. That doesnt influence the words or style of the music."

aside from a couple of posters, so far most of the comments don't even mention the major label shift. most of the fans should already be familiar with the fact that RK are no longer on an indie label, since they made the jump during More Adventurous. if anyone was mad at them for that, they're probably aren't really fans to begin with. but judging from the comments, much of the issue seems to be how it's changed rather than the fact that they've changed. not all change is for the better.

if you like the new sound, good for you. but just cause you're an RK fan doesn't mean you have to like and agree with everything they do. you can still love them and dislike a bunch of songs. that's what makes them a band and not...um a cult? but i guess the numerous comments and my own multiple ones show how strongly the fans feel for RK, even if we don't always agree.

I'd be ecstatic if my Mom listened to this song instead of Christian music, but it ISN'T interesting or genius. It's the kind of song you accept if you've had kids and you want your favorite musical acts to mellow out with you. It's a totally solid disposable soul-pop song, it's just by a band who's done way better. I'd dance to this at my wedding since it would make the older attendees feel comfy. That's just about the best review it could ever get.

2. only like stuff that sounds like their first CD and the stuff when they were "indie."
3. think these people commenting are retarded.

fans are allowed to have opinions. and artists have the right to express themselves however they like. and there are times when people won't like that expression.
i think it's fine - and one thing - to just not like a song or a sound.
and it's a totally different thing to think that they've sold out.

i wouldn't go far enough to say that these new songs are horrible - and not even that different.

"silver lining" is great - in my opinion.
"moneymaker" is not so great - in my opinion.

I love it so much. I think that you "h8rz" should really give it a chance. This is obviously the direction that Rilo Kiley was already traveling during "More Adventurous," so don't sound so shocked. If they stayed the same as they were back in the day with "The Frug" or even "Take Offs and Landings" you would all probably be complaining that they suck for having everything sound the same. Get with it. This is what you call progressive. It is beautiful, and if you can't keep up well then you will probably lose touch . . . in the bad way. I see that many people are also trying to deny this single of its country elements . . . are you deaf? It clearly shows fusion which I think is exciting. I love Rilo Kiley, I adore The Elected, and I absolutely positively loved Rabbit Fur Coat and everything that included the Watson Twins.

Oh, and also, I don't feel like this is as poppy as everyone is making it out to be. Maybe that's just me . . .

And Jenny is most definitely my role model.
But I listened to some clips of the new album and I tried so hard to like it.

I LOVED their old stuff and I hope they go back to that style.
I bought two tickets to Seattle,
And regardless, I'm still going to buy Under The Blacklight.
Even if I never listen to it.
I think it's just hard for them working with their side projects, and getting back together to make this album.

I actually downloaded the album.

It's good, but it's far from their best.

It's just a little all over the place.

One song sounds like a Fleetwood Mac, the next borders on attempting hardcore rock, and then they break into a half-Spanish-"we were listening to old Gloria Estefan when we wrote this" song.

Yeah... Just a little all over the place.

If this was their best album, that simply means that most of you would turn to talk shit on their previous work, saying something like "it's about time they made something decent". This song really isn't awful at all. I enjoy the hell out of it. If it missing anything, it's the blue collared intimacy that some of RK's more folk-esque work has brilliantly delivered. So, true, it doesn't sound like Jenny's usual lonely bar blues, but it's a sexier sound that we haven't heard from her. We're talking about a singer that makes us all smile with half our mouths when she says "fuck" in a song. If your only response to this track, which as we all know is only a small piece of the album, then you're disappointed in an band for being able to grow. If you listen to all of RK's albums in chronological order, you can undoubtedly see a maturity developing, and a slow (yet steady) decent from the playful interludes of 'Take Offs and Landings'. If you're looking for the lil' indie kid of Rilo Kiley past, they've grown up. I enjoy the new sound. Just not as much as I enjoyed watching them find it. But I applaud their ability to grow.

You know, I'm really torn on this whole album. I mean, The Moneymaker has like eight words, and yet it reveals a [dare I even say this?] sulrty-er side of Jenny. I personally like Silver lining. I actually really admiire someone who'd write a song that gets stuck in your head, and you hate it. But seriously. I also admire that RK sounds a lot more...cool to me. This album is far from perfect. Very far. Then again no one is. And with the 'I wish that Rilo Kiley would go back to old awesome selves they were. They just suck now.' people, c'mon! It's part of being an artist to change up things. In short, I just like it. Freaking sue me. I don't care.

This song is, in my opinion, quite good. Granted, I am not a "long-time RK fan" or anything remotely close to that. It just shows that this band is good at whatever it attempts to do - I know that have an indie background, but doesn't this show that they can step outside the box once in a while???

Either way, Rilo Kiley will never be played on Top 40 stations...not even with this song being quite poppy. They have too much of an independent pedigree to be played alongside Avril and Nickelback. So quit whining already!

elitist and clueless if you think this new single is anything other than a retro-pop indie gem.. success really pisses you people off doesn't it.. it is heads and shoulders above anything being released by the world.. it is in your notion that anything commercial is a sellout that your nonsensical criticism falls flat. this is the best and most accessible this band has ever sounded. grow up, eventually you will understand that success is not selling out and maybe you'll be a little less bitter about your inevitable failures.

No one here's gonna change anyone else's opinion--which, by the way, is what everyone's posting, and they're well entitled to do so--so please shut up.

Personally, I think (notice, think is a personal statement--I'm not attacking anyone else's opinions) that Silver Lining is one of the catchiest songs ever. The lyrics are less cynical than older Rilo songs, which is sad. I miss the cynicism too. Moneymaker's not a good song, in my opinion.

Ok kiddies. Just heard Silver Lining on the only radio station in Chicago that would even play something like that. Quite simply, it's just more great Rilo Kiley. Get rid of your Indie agenda and just appreciate the music.
