Radiohead's In Rainbows Album Art: Name That Blob

Some were upset that In Rainbows didn't come with a little .jpg love, while others emailed asking if what we've had until now in Heavy Rotation was the legit cover. So this one's for you: the proper front and back to In Rainbows, for your PMPleasure. Once again, the band's turned to longtime collaborator/Thom's soulmate in dystopian, post-apocalyptic visual art, Stanley Donwood (né Dan Rickwood). (Btw, highly recommend Dead Children Playing, his picture book with Dr. Tchock [aka Yorke] featuring the pair's paintings from OK Computer through to the Hail To The Thief era; your coffee table will thank you. And then fear for our future.)

Anyway, as you'd guess the In Rainbows cover features most of Roygbiv (about as much as "All I Need" does of "Roygbiv" -- gotta love that Rainbow connection). Let's play "name the orange blob in the middle"...

From the front...

...to the back.

Thanks to green plastic radiohead.

Oh about that blob: very fetal...

Cool...like I said before it's "Friend Opportunity" on the front and "Person Pitch" on the back

The front cover was on wikipedia briefly the morning the album was released. I grabbed it and it was taken down about an hour later. Glad to see what I found was legit.

The blob is obviously a volcano. Unless the posters above me were being sarcastic, which doesn't translate well on the Internet.

It is a close-up of James Blunt's career.

The blob's name is Shawn. I met him at a Mark Ronson gig last month.

Weird fishes."

it reminds me of something out of an old chemistry textbook..

although i kinda wish it was really james blunt's career.

Again, this is a fake. Look at the picture on Radiohead's website. There's a white blob in the upper left corner, and a blue streak going up the left, also. The font is different, too... The spacing on this doesn't even match.

By using type and typesetting in a way that looks to some of us (myself speaking as a designer) as unfashionable, or ugly, they are simply pushing boundaries of what's considered 'acceptable'. They can do whatever they want. They are not crippled by a need to be 'safe'. I love them for that.

something i've been wondering. why do you think they decided to have the first half of the album (side a) listed in color and the second half (side b) in white?

or in terms stereogum can understand: as you know we've all been going treefingers for the new 'head, but how comes the track listing starts off all spectral-roygbiv and then takes a left turn at track six into neon bible b&w territory. kelly clarkson. and i hate interpol...no wait...maybe...

sorry. it is a valid question though. any thoughts?

The blob featured in this graphic is not the same blob featured on inrainbows.com (look closely). Also, the fonts are different (look closer). Also also, there appears to be a blue arch in the upper left hand side of the cover, which is missing from this art. I suspect that these images are recreated versions of what is on inrainbows.com

This isn't legit. It's a recreation of the vinyl cover that a person at the atease forums made. They made it as album art for their iTunes. It's pretty close to the actual vinyl cover but it's not the same. But in any case, i'm using this for now.

I figured when the band released the album, part of the genius would be for each fan to find a picture/graphic to use as album art, just like we interpret and give meaning to music in our way (there are exceptions as with most things). Guess I jumped the gun on that one!

In the Navy we have a saying when someone puts way too much thought into something that shouldn't require that much effort "Don't Nuke this", that's the thing I like about this website, it seems like almost everything gets "Nuked", it makes for some great reading and laughter!

Rainbows...Lava, maybe they're taking a trip out here to Hawaii for the Winter! HAHAHA!

These are definitely fake. The fonts used in these are different from the one used in both the official diskbox photo and the front page of the In Rainbows site. The real font, in case anyone cares, is ClearviewHwy, a typeface designed for improved legibility on road signs in the US.

The blob is clearly a new galaxy being formed. A galaxy full of rainbow colored Raidohead fans. Alternately, it is the golden load that the collective indie music world blew over the release of the album.

that typography is atrocious. there's no way they would release an album cover using Arial on the front cover and some squashed, anonymous sans serif on the back. it's fake. and a bad replication at that.
