The Killers' Sawdust Album Art

Haven't done one of these in awhile, and since everybody loved their take on Joy Division so much, we thought we'd letcha at another cover by the Killers: the album art for Sawdust (tricky us). This is a step-up, actually, if we may continue the apples-and-boleros comparison; while Brandon's vocals on "Shadowplay" were a little hammy for these tastes, the forthcoming b-sides collection's cover to which it belongs is autumnally classy, save the green alarm clock font sitting dead center.

Sawdust is out 11/13 on Island.

The Killers "Shadowplay" cover sucks! Bands shouldn't cover Joy Division unless they can improve on the songs! This is weak!

I am a big fan of the Killers band font, but man, that font for "Sawdust" just doesn't fit. I like the cover image as well....they were so close with this one....

It's alright- but the cover of their album should not matter as much as the talent of the band. The Killers are the best band of our time! Everything they do is golden... those that think otherwise have no taste.

Brooke, surely you jest.

Anyway, "Shadowplay" was absolute bullshit slaughtering of the original. Ian Curtis is still on the spin cycle, from that one.

Kinda rubbish front cover.
I think i get why they have chosen 'Sawdust'
Well me and my brother talked about it.
After you've sawed a piece of wood..what do you get afterwards? Sawdust.
After albums? B-sides.
Put it together.
You've got a B-side album.

Yeah i'm a complete idiot.

I was watchin' Live From Abbey Road on the Sundance Channel yesterday and The Killers covered Dire Straits' Romeo and Juliet beautifully.

And for all you holier-than-thou fuckheads, Brandon Flowers (who I do not worship, merely enjoy listening to) explicitly said that he was really worried about covering it because they might not do it justice, but that, if anything, it'll expose their younger fans to good older music.

Cover's pretty. I rather like the alarm clock font- it's a nice play on how it's nearly impossible to separate nature and technology these days. Though it would work better in all white, not green.

Hmmmmm...I'm thinking of a pattern?

Nirvana:
1989: Bleach
1991: Nevermind
1992: Incesticide

The Killers:
2004: Hot Fuss
2006: Sam's Town
2007: Sawdust

I enjoyed Incesticide as much as any other troubled Midwestern teenager, so I'm looking forward to Sawdust even though it's fifteen years down the road, because...music has no boundaries. Another thing, when we talk about The Killers...are we really talking about the people in the band or their ultimate boss, Universal Music Group. I found out today UMG either owns or has a joint share in Geffen, coincidence maybe? Man, Radiohead really makes learning about Record Labels fun!

To all the haters: for once, you might want to try objectively listening to a band's music and not judging them by their mainstream-ness. I know it's hard, but just try. It will do you good.

"On the plus side, Wes, we can look forward to a Brandon Flowers suicide sometime in 2009."

This is probably the most awful thing I've never heard in my whole life ! The Killers have a lot to do with the evolution of rock music in the 00's. And Brandon Flowers is also one of the most talented and brilliant composer of all time. He knows how to express everything with so much of beauty and poetry. Just think about My List or even Smile Like You Mean It... He also gave the Americans a way to be proud of who they are and show the world their great values... Instead of every things we often hear about their government and all that.

We haven't stop the hear about this fantastic band. Just keep going, Brandon ! You're such an inspiration for every young musicians (and I'm also one of your biggest fan !)

The future of rock music will no doubt involve The Killers. These guys are able of everything. They made an impressive "music makeover" from Hot Fuss to Sam's Town. I guess they would try some other style during their career, which I wish to be long!

And for people who think it's too fast to do an album as Sawdust after only two CDs, they don't know how much INCREDIBLE songs they made wich are not on Sam's Town or Hot Fuss.

Howewer, if you desagree with this your such a looser who listen to some kind of shit. I would be really curious to know who is your actual favorite band.

The Killers are an amazing band. Joy division sucks, the cover is much better. Romeo and Juliet is the only possible failure to outperform the original because Dire Straits was actually a phenominal band as well. If you don't like this album before you have even heard it, then just kill yourself.

I'm not the biggest fan of stadium rock, it irritates me. Which was the majority of Sam's Town. Amazing, but not for me. Whereas these B-sides [I hope] will be a little less U2esque.

The Killers guitar player (I don't know his name and don't really care) showed up at my venue with his pregnant girlfriend to pick up their Oasis tickets five minutes before the show ended. She did all the talking and come to find out they didn't want to see the show they just wanted to hang out with Oasis. She was a piece of work to say the least.

Oh, and Sam's Town sucked. Sorry to disappoint ya'll but Brandon Flowers is not Christ returned.

I really like the killers, so i suppose i am biased and think everyone should listen to them, but really, if you don't like it, just listen to something else and agree that it's not your thing. no need to bring down the people who do like the killers. and there's no way their album cover can make any sense until we hear the album in its entirety, so just check it out and realize that, whether you like it or not, it is an art form that somebody put a lot of thought into, and respect it for that and that alone. I heard the original "Shadowplay" by Joy Division and I must say... I find it quite bland. I like the cover much more. And I agree with bassboy up there... not everyone will love The Killers. Who cares if you think they suck or if they rule the world. Either way, they are out there doing what they love, despite what you haters say. And honestly, if they were so bad, why would they still have millions of fans? They really are one of the best of these times. Long live The Killers.

OH AND P.S.
For all you people talking crap, lemme ask you...

1.) Are you out there doing what you love in front of sold out audiences?
2.) Do any of you have ANY talent like that band, whatsoever?

I definitely will not waist my time mindlessly bashing an artist I don’t like. So wipe your tear smeared emo eyeliner eyes and move the fuck on.
The Title and album art are amazing. It is a great concept for a B-Side record.
From a musicians view The Killers are a breath of fresh air. Yes you can say they sound like Duran Duran, Joy Division Etc... But is that such a bad thing? It is so much more interesting than the majority of bands out there right now that all sound the exactly the same! I thank the Killers for giving us something so great and different.
Tranquilize W/ Lou Reed is one of the most epic tracks I've heard this year.
Their version of Shadowplay is amazing as well. I am a huge Joy Division fan. The Killers give the cover more than justice.
If you think The Killers do not have a fan base you must live in a hole. Every show I've seen has been sold out with some of the most ecstatic fans at a concert since I saw U2 a couple of years ago. They are amazing live. I'd put them in my top five live acts any day.
I look forward to the next studio release form them and thank them for giving us Sawdust while we wait.

I like this album alot. But I'm a little perplexed by why Flowers decided to redo the Vocals on some songs, but not others. Under the Gun and Move Away, I think were perfect the way they were, and went and make Under the Gun flat, and his voice actually cracks in Move Away at 2:38, and THEY LEFT IT IN. I love the killers but this is strange to me. The album is fantastic though, it's already grown on me after one day. Sweet Talk is fantastic.

The Killers are an amazing band! They are so much better than the current bands which do sound EXACTLY alike! The Killers are probably the only band out there who is not afraid to try new things. All those bands(I'm sure you all know who i mean) would never have the balls to try anything close to Sam's Town because they would sell ZERO records. With Sam's Town, The Killers proved that it's the music that matters!! Yes, they have a B-sides album already because they are that good!!

i agree with many of you on this thread in that i too thought sam's town was a large disappointment & something that was 'pop-ified' to the point of making me sick.

the latest album cover i think is interesting simply because as someone above has stated

"a b-sides collection after two albums?

Posted by: richard at October 11, 2007 11:50 AM"

is rather odd & almost a ploy in order to look for un tapped cash flow...

but as i discussed this with one of the guys here in my office, he made a good point that maybe 'the killers' are contemplating leaving there label or that quite possibly there have already been discussions regarding this & that the label may have pushed this out simply to make as much profit as possible.

and if this is the case one could possibly look at the album as 'cutting of the hand that fed you' & more along the lines of a statement rather then just some visual abstraction.

just a thought

This album is fantastic. I'm a huge Killers fan and seen them three times in the past year. The band have really matured over the past few years and tranquilize is a great song despite taking a bit of time to grow on me. This record completes my collection of Killers songs. The order of the tracks does not strike me as making sense but all the tracks are brilliant. People who spend their time slating other bands obviously have got nothing better to spend their time doing. Perhaps they should spend more time supporting bands they like. Flowers is a genious and the cover tracks are truly amazing. Romeo & Juliet does the original justice and more, flowers vocals are sublime on this track. The Killers are a truly great band who im certain will have a long successful career.

Releasing the B-sides in a single collection was a great way to get the songs to the fans who haven't the opportunities to purchase all of the singles individually. Tranqualize is another one that highlights Brandon's song-writing talent and the Abbey Road Sam's Town version also shows his awesome talent on the keyboard. Life and Spirit were given to Shadowplay. Sweet Talk has inspiring lyrics and great depth. Sawdust is dedicated to their fans and their fans are grateful.

Anyone who says Joy Division sucks is invalid. That band gave a look into the psyche of a man who suffered way more inside than most of us ever will. Their music is like stepping into his mind. It's just as epic as it is claustrophobic. And it just might make you kill yourself.

Now the Killers, on the other hand, have lyrics which don't really seem to mean anything. And I find their music rather annoying. I pretty much hate modern radio rock. Grunge is still where it's at IMHO. But then I grew up on that stuff so I guess I'm just like everybody else.

The Killers are an awesome band! They're my favorite band by far! Anyone who doesn't like them and goes around saying "The Killers fucking suck!" needs to go crawl in a hole and die.

yeah :)
