Weezer Offer A Taste Of "Pork And Beans"

Recently we've spotted Rivers playing soccer and otherwise Alone, but a new Weezer LP's on the horizon, starting with a serving of "Pork And Beans." The snippet portion over at Amazon is small, but it gives you an idea -- crunchy, bouncy, classic-sounding Weezer. And, judging from the single's cover art, album six just might end up being called the Red Album (not to step on your toes, Baroness)...

Weezer.com updated the news section over the weekend, too, offering up some facts we haven't already covered:

3. The Album's theme (color). This has been reported as "The Red Album." This is a strong possibility but it is not for sure. As I understand things, many competing visual ideas are being played off against each other (none of which would affect the self titled aspect), and some are "Red" in style or concept. But whether this ends up as the final theme remains to be seen.
4. First single. Confirmed as being "Pork And Beans". Could this change? Maybe a tiny chance of that. But it is definitely a song on the album (and it is unrelated to the demo song "Pig" that made it onto the internet in '06). As for the release date of this single, this information is TBD, likewise the potential (if any) for "physical" single format(s).
5. Other songs on the album. Many song titles have been kicked around the 'net, including "Everybody Get Dangerous", "Automatic", "Ms. Sweeney", "?" (a '12 letter word starting with T and ending with R'), "I'm the Greatest Man That Ever Lived", "Daydreamer". All are real weezer songs, but none are 100% confirmed as actually being on the album as of this writing.
6. Producer/Mixer. The album was made in 3 phases, produced by Rick Rubin (Malibu, spring '07), Weezer (mostly) (Malibu, summer/fall '07), and Jacknife Lee and Weezer (Santa Monica, early '08), and was mixed by Rich Costey.

The "Pork And Beans" single's out 4/22 and the full-length should arrive 6/17 on Geffen. That's the same day as the new, still-untitled Wolf Parade, for those keeping track. If people still waited for actual release days to listen to music, that'd be a fairly great music Tuesday. Instead, it'll just be another Tuesday.

I remember "Pork and Beans" being a catch phrase from a skit that Jim Carrey used to do on In Living Color, any ties?? He played an old man who would yell "Pooooorrrrrk and beans" and then would eat them out of the can. The phrase has long survived in my family.

This actually sounds kinda good. At least better than anything they've released in the past decade. Production and Rivers vocals sound good for once in a long time.

Buzznet now owns Stereogum? Is this true? Scott do you own any part of Stereogum anymore?

I'm not proud that I did this, but... I almost cried. This sounds like old Weezer. GOOD Weezer, the one I grew up with. Rivers' voice, the driving guitars, the Pixies-ish guitars at the end... Beautiful. Stupid song name, but I'm really excited for this. I doubt it'll surpass Pinkerton or Blue, but I bet it'll blow the last three out of the water.

I don't think this is the album cover. If you look closely at the e's in weezer, you'll notice that the ends are not the tapered ones that the band uses from the century gothic font.

look at the green album...no tapered e's....this is good

Is it safe to say that Jacknife Lee is the worst producer on Earth? He ruined what would be the best R.E.M. album since 1992, he turned The Hives into a shiny, slippery little American rock band, he made everyone hate Bloc Party, he turned Snow Patrol into Coldplay-wannabes, and he obliterated the only good songs on the last U2 album. I am scared what he will do to Weezer, who by the sounds of their new single, are desperately trying to be likable again.

Jacknife Lee only produced two songs on the album -- "Pork and Beans" and something else. In other words, his presence will not be all over this album.

Ah, Weezer, making good music again. I mean, I kinda liked some of Make Believe, but I'm such a Weezer fanatic there was no way I wouldn't like at least part of the album. I've been looking forward to this album for a long time, glad to finally have a date for it.

That isn't the album cover. The name of the album is Weezer not Pork and Beans. I believe that is just the single cover. Anyway I'm very excited for this release... can't wait.

I'm hoping this will be the album of the summer. Come on, Weezer... I know you've still got it in you.

Is it me or has every Weezer album since green been heralded as a "return to the band's roots" quickly followed by a backlash about a month after its release? Personally I've liked tracks from all of their albums to date (ok, Maladroit just barely meets that goal), although I know that's not a popular opinion. Lookin forward to hearing this one, but forgive me for not getting all hot and bothered by this 30 second clip.

I can't believe that after being bamboozled by Maladroit and Make Believe that this clip would move anyone to tears. Shit, "We Are All On Drugs" had crunch. Crunch does not a good Weezer song make.

That said, Teh Varz seems to be wearing his heart on his sleeve again. Let's hope those Harvard brains follow.

It has little to do with "crunch." It's about the whole package. Maybe it's even something intangible in this sort of song. "WAAOD" may have had crunch, but it sounded nothing like good, old school Weezer. (Though I do like the song.) It sounded like modern-era, radio-friendly "pop-metal" Weezer.

"Pork and Beans" has Rivers' voice right back where it was, years ago. The guitars have the same tone and- well, fuck, I'm not going to pretend to know anything about guitars, but they have the same general sound to them. The lyrics seem quirky, without being pop-radio stupid.

Bottom line, I'm just happy to see Rivers putting out really decent material again. Well, in theory. I also enjoyed the brief clip of the remix of "Automatic," so my hopes are officially up.

maladroit is nowhere near the same level of awful as make believe. there wasn't one part of maladroit that was cringe worthy. in fact, it was a fine album. it just didn't please many long-time weezer fans but there's about as many really good songs on it as green and a handful of decent, forgettable songs like green. make believe was embarrassing.

Make Believe made me lose my faith in humanity. Everything else I love. I chalk up Make Believe to a Rick Rubin release slate that absolutely underwhelmed: Audioslave's second album, Red Hot Chili Peppers' "By The Way", and Make Believe.

I swear this isn't a shameless plug, but i have it on good authority that weezer fans would enjoy my latest musical project.

the blue album group plays said album from start to finish including all the harmonies, rippin' solos and cardigan sweaters intact (or should we say undone?)

I always thought Maladroit was underrated. At least they were trying something different. Although The Green Album was terrible and Make Believe was the low point of their career. Whatever they come up with next, it has to be better than their last album.

Maladroit was good. That is their third best album behind Pinkerton and the Blue Album. Make Believe was absolute shit. I am excited to hear this record. You gotta think that Cuomo has one more good record in him.

Why in the hell does everyone hate Make Believe so much? It was GREAT, so much better than Maladroit, and especially the Green Album (which was absolutely horrid; did you ever notice that the guitar solos are all the same melody as the vocals?).

I am looking forward to this.

Pardon Me, by the way, 'sounds like old weezer'.
