Album Of The Year, Grammy Stizz

This year's Grammys (Sunday @ 8pm on CBS) are sure to be another major yawn, but I'll watch it anyway. Maybe Gretchen Wilson will have a nip slip.

As I've written before, the only Grammy win I ever remember is Album Of The Year. Here are the current standings at bettwwts.com...

GRAMMY ODDS TO WIN
Alicia Keys Diary Of Alicia Keys +200
Usher Confessions +120
Ray Charles & Various Artists Genius Loves Company -110
Green Day American Idiot +550
Kanye West The College Dropout +1000
I like dead blind dudes as much as the next blogger, but Ray's album is hardly genius. I'd like to see the statue in Green Day's hands, but I won't hold my geek stink breath. In the meantime, check out the comeback trio's grand plans as revealed in last week's Entertainment Weekly:
BILLIE JOE: Punk sometimes has this defeatist attitude where you can't expand. I look at a band like U2 that started out more or less as a punk band but kept expanding and wound up being one of the biggest bands in the world. And I think it's okay to want that.
MIKE: We saw the Rolling Stones a year and a half ago ... and it was a fuckin' great show. It was awesome. You could tell they were jelling, it just clicked. When I saw that, I was just like, "That's where I want to be."
TRE: That's how long we wanna take this shit.
Green Day, the next U2? Just spare us the giant lemon.

The Green Day album proves that the easiest way to get critical acclaim is to put out an album that agrees with the political viewpoint of 99.9 percent of rock critics...

A decade later, all of the singles and even some album tracks from "Dookie" still get airplay. Somehow I doubt that we'll be hearing "American Idiot" on the radio in 2015.

yeah, was he laughing uncontrollably after he said that U2 was a punk band and the Stones still rock?

I admit that I can't help but like the songs on American Idiot but most of the songs "borrow" heavily from other songs. While you listen to Green day you find your brain tweaking trying to figure out where you heard that melody line... "Oh yeah!!!! All the Young Dudes by Mott the Hoople"... things like that (and at least they take from the classics). It happens repeatedly and it may not be a bad thing but almost every song on American Idiot has you thinking how familiar it sounds. And you can argue that familiarity is the hallmark of a great pop song but a lot of the time you just end up wanting to hear the song they borrowed from. Awww, what the hell, almost every lyric and melody has already been written. In the end, Green Day will always write really catchy songs. We will leave the innovation to other artists.

AMERICAN IDIOT is far from the best album of the year, but Usher's and Alicia's aren't amazing either. I wouldn't be mad if Kanye won. The Grammys are a joke, but you can't deny the sales impact of winning Album Of The Year.

I just don't get the Grammies. Awards are consistently awarded to mediocre albums. Usher album was GOOD, Kanye's was OK. The rest I never even really listened to. The Grammies should just be real with themselves and change the best album category to the most commercial accessible album category, cause no matter who wins their album cannot be regarded as best. Also I'd like to just say fuck Ray Charles, he's dead and he wore ugly glasses.

All these albums SUCKED they might have had 1 or 2 hits under them. It's so easy I will name them
1.A Keys: you don't know my name and Aint got you
2.Green Day: American Idiot and Blvd of dreams
3.Kanye: Jesus and Through the Wire
4.Usher: YEAH
5.Ray Charles: Georgia

So again they all Suck this is all commerical shit I just want to tune in for The Killers, Franz Ferdaline, and the Scissor Sisters.
P.s. That Ray Charles comment was super Harsh the man was very talented and in case you forgot DUMB FUCK his glasses sucked b/c he was blind. That comment is sure to get you a VIP pass into Hell!!
If anything lets get rid of Jamie Foxx the man swears he is Oh just thinking about it makes me want to BARF. Guess I will be you guest!!

ATTN: Haters.
MEMO: The grammys put on a good show this year. Good performances by U2, Usher/James Brown, The Allman Brothers Jam, Alicia Keys, Franz Ferdinand, and yes, even Green Day. And a show-stopping Kanye. No Britney or Back Street Boys bullshit. Okay, so John Mayer wins for song of the year -- the awards are still crap, but the music was good.

i happen to disagree with most of you people - 'american idiot', imho is going to stand alone as one of the best mainstream rock albums of the decade when it comes down to it. it's very hard to make a political album that doesn't have an expiration date, and it was great to see them win ultramainstream accolades from their peers.

ben loves music

Kayne West is headed into ego overkill with the likes of Pee Diddy, and Gusher..err Usher. Thats all I have to say about that.

Loretta Lynn and Jack White won, and for me that was the highlight!

after watching the obligatory goodness that is Arrested Development and Carnivale, i had to switch over to the Grammys inna rubbernecking-car accident-kinda-way to see that total abomination of a cover version of Across The Universe.was it just me or did that menagerie of performers look like an episode of the Simpsons?they've all become horrible caricatures of themselves.utter toss.

hey I cant beleive that Ray Charles never won it in his lifetime reeks of a set up.No way is it one of those life changing albums. This aint no James Brown, Bob Dylan or Stone Roses. I hated the Nora Jones warbling on it ..it was this album..as far as I remember. Anyway very pedestrian and I guess all those awards are just tokenistic. Did i hear that Rod Stewart has won a gong...get a life...all this looking back to jurrasic park. This is a bit of a ramble but hey U2 the best band no way this is a conspiracy definately

i dunno how any of u guys can say bad stuff about green day. there music is unbelievable. Not to mention that they are probably one of the best live bands and have the best stage presence of almost any band right now and even ever. Billie Joe is an amazing song writer and YES THEY ARE BETTER THEN U2.

I dont see the resemblense of Green Day and U2. For fucks sake, my grandma listens to U2. They arent even in the same league. Bono is overated, and Green Day pretty much sold out a long long long time ago.

I'm a huge Green Day fan, I probably like them more than u2 right now. But people's opinions here are so out there if you have knowledge about rock music history.

If you've been reading any Green Day articles, Billy Joe mentions u2 in almost every one nowadays. He said this new album is a cross between "the Sex Pistols and U2." And guess what, it's their strongest record to date.

I'm not saying Green Day fans have to love u2, but respect their music. That chiming guitar from "Blvd. of Broken Dreams?" Yes, the Edge of u2 pioneered that guitar sound. Listen to the drum riff from u2's "Bullet the Blue Sky" and then play "Give me Novacaine". Absolutely Identical!!!

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, cause there isn't. u2 have an original sound but they still borrowed ideas from the Clash and the Who in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with the younger generation doing the same.

Green Day are probably my favorite band, but to say I think they are on u2's level on the grand scheme of things is ridiculous...right now. They still got a long career ahead of them, so who knows? GD is a brilliant live act as well, I've seen them countless times. But I'm sorry, they aren't as strong as u2 and Bono has more stage prescence than Billy Joe.

Maybe I am lucky and see the brilliant in both bands.

U2 = original musical genius
Greenday = Unoriginal, everysong is the same old boring crap, simple to play music.
