Beastie Boys Go Instrumental For The Mix-Up

Adrock, Mike D, and MCA are releasing lucky LP number seven on June 26th via Capitol, but there won't be any White Castle references, Brooklyn love, or Tibetan chanting -- in fact, no vocalized sentiments at all. This time out the trio are sticking solely to their instruments, with some help from unofficial fourth B Boy Money Mark and percussionist Alfredo Ortiz.

Mike D told P4K that it'll be nothing like The In Sounds From Way Out!, instead drawing on the likes of PiL, the Killing Joke, the Slits, and Gang Of Four for inspiration. So who wants to be the one to tell the Beasties that copping Gang Of Four was an '05 thing? Here's what they've cooked up for a cover...

The Mix-Up tracklist after the jump.

01 "B For My Name"
02 "14th St. Break"
03 "Suco De Tangerina"
04 "The Gala Event"
05 "Electric Worm"
06 "Freaky Hijiki"
07 "Off The Grid"
08 "The Rat Cage"
09 "The Melee"
10 "Dramastically Different" *
11 "The Cousin Of Death"
12 "The Kangaroo Rat"

* Yes "Dramastically" is intentional.

They've always had top notch musical taste outside of hip-hop; will be interested to hear how they employ these other influences.

I can't find where to listen to this stuff... I looked on YouTube and all I see is their older stuff. Is it on their own site? I mean, they're not my favorite, but they're totally worth checking out.

Look, credit where it is due for trying new things, but I'll be mighty p.o.ed if I hear the album and realize it should have been called "The Ring-Tone!"

Looking forward to it.
Seen lots of videos in the past of them playing their instruments live, and always enjoyed those, so I can see this being pretty decent.

Song for Junior, one of their instrumental songs, is probably one of their best songs. Take that!

Thanks... I appreciate your enthusiasm. So sorry you think my website is crap. Some people who have found it here actually like it and have told me so. What have I got to gain, anyway? It's anything but making me money. I enjoy doing it, and even more people enjoy watching the videos, even if I'm not the best "reviewer" of music and you think the posts are junk.

I've been a fan since LTI and as much as I love their mc styling... I'm still excited to see what they created this time around. Plus, I only had to wait a couple years for a new album instead of six.

I like the cover art - the first thing that came to mind was Monty Python, then a little Yellow Submarine. I like the cheese wedge for the letterA.

My god, can someone please ban Rochelle now? She hijacks every damn thread . . .

Rina, the Beatles jumped right up in my head when I saw that cover, too. I guess it's the collagey factor?

I'm more excited for this album than their past two -- they always have excellent taste in music, and their instrumentals are funky as all get out, e.g., In 3s and Ricky's Theme.

Technically there were vocalizations on the In Sound From The Way Out...but anyways, I'M GEEKED AS HELL! DROP THAT SHIT ALREADY!

lets not forget that the Beasties got a jump on the whole post-punk thing when they re-released Liquid Liquid on their Grand Royale label back in 1997, way before DFA got hold of The Rapture and Rough Trade released that excellent post punk comp. In my eyes, they started the renewed interest in the New York Punk-Funk/No wave thing... got me going on it at least!

If any track is at least 10% as good as transitions then bring it on!

I've had a chance to listen to the album, and I think it's great. Very "Paul's Boutique" I dig it.

I have heard the album and I just want to say Trent what the F are you talking about?

Very Paul's Boutique?

In this day of top dollar royalties for samples there will never be another Pauls Boutique. I guess the new album not having any words makes it just like PB too.....if anything In Sound from Way Out, but that was more fusion jazz and this is more rock.

Its a great album people. Just wait.
