Built To Spill's There Is No Enemy Album Info

thubmnail icon: Built To Spill's There Is No Enemy Album Info

Built To Spill's seventh full-length There Is No Enemy is out this October. When Doug Martsch spoke with Jessica in June for a detailed Progress Report he mentioned the collection was fairly collaborative:

While he wrote all the songs on his own, he says the rest of Built to Spill helped the tracks evolve over the recording sessions. Members traded off parts seamlessly, meaning that, if you followed Martsch as well as related Built To Spill bands like Caustic Resin, you might be able to pick out guitar players. At other times, Martsch says he couldn't tell you who was on each guitar. And because BTS edited via ProTools for the first time, Martsch had unlimited tracks and takes to use, making it even harder to pick out individual takes or players.

As far as those other players go, in addition to Martsch & his usual Co., There Is No Enemy includes guest spots from Sam Coomes, ex-Treepeople co-guitarist/vocalist Scott Schmaljohn, Butthole Surfer Paul Leary, Roger Manning, etc. Take a look at the kind of blue album art and downcast-seeming tracklist and try to imagine what this is going to sound like.

The tracklist:

01 "Aisle 13"
02 "Hindsight"
03 "Nowhere Lullaby"
04 "Good Ol' Boredom"
05 "Life's A Dream"
06 "Oh Yeah"
07 "Pat"
08 "Done"
09 "Planting Seeds"
10 "Things Fall Apart"
11 "Tomorrow"

That is pretty poetic that no stereogum readers are interested in Built to Spill.

17 comments for Raditude and 2 for this? Why is our culture so obsessed with bad music?

Are you kidding, I love Built to Spill and I'm 51. I work at a University and I've turned college kids on to them.

I wish there was a preview track.
I've never been let down by a Built to Spill album, though, so it's not like I'm worried about it or anything.
And those shows with Dinosaur Jr. -- Wish I was somewhere near TX or OK

Yeah, I absolutely love Built To Spill and have no doubt that this album will kick ass, but that cover looks like a late 90's nu-metal album. It's giving me Korn flashbacks.

I have had the pleasure of hearing them play Oh Yeah, and I liked it as much as anything on Perfect From Now On. This could be one of the year's best. Love the album cover by the way...

Soooooooooooooo fucking excited. Built to Spill are absolute legends. I've never seen them live, do you think they will tour in Australia? It does';t look like it. So sad if they don't.
Coming out in the same month as Sainthood (I think). October is going to be epic win.

Suddenly, Handsome Furs is shaking in their boots that they won't hold onto Steelydwill's top album of 2009 honors.

There are surprisingly a lot of Built to Spill fans around. Especially among the kids at my college, there seems to be a cult BTS following forming.

Built to Spill has always been true to their music, and long after bands like The Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana have given up trying to find a new image and new people to write songs for them, Built to Spill will still retain the same fan base they have had from the start. They will never die.

I must confess that I only discovered Built To Spill this year, but they are now already one of my favorite bands. 'Keep It Like A Secret' and 'There's Nothing Wrong With Love' have to be two of the best albums of the 90's.

Just doing my part to get this great band at the top of the most commented on this site. Built to Spill went into beast mode for this album.

That cover just seems off course, their previous art looked so much different and original, but the sound will overpower the look of the silly little cover anyway.. Is it just me or does this art seem to fit BTS perfectly? http://www.msieben.com

Whoah, so exited for the new album, I'm sure it'll take a few listens to sink in, as their past albums (and most anything worth a shit) did.

Does anyone know anything about the "bonus" CD from the Vinyl edition? Is it simply the album, or some additional tracks? I want this album, like, yesterday, but would prefer that beautiful art on shiny vinyl, especially if there's bonus muzak. Also, how in the world did they earn a "parental advisory: explicit content" sticker? Crazy.

Strange that many seem anti-this album art, I personally loved it on first glance, and seems like it fits the "feel" of BtS so well. Although I agree with LandonP, that art would be cool on a shirt or single...

I'm really enjoying the album, in much the same way I'm enjoying the new Yo La Tengo: it's not a departure, but I don't need to depart from guitar playing and songwriting like that.
I am among those who like the cover art. Anyone know who the artist is?
