New Muse - "Uprising"

thubmnail icon: New Muse - "Uprising"

There was a literal uprising when Muse fans got a listen to the undeniably Queen-y "United States Of Eurasia," which to be fair, successfully distracted people from the song's name. The collection's opener and first single (and protest song) "Uprising" is a darker synth-lined track with stadium-sized "hey hey" group chants. Fans will be fans again. In Matthew Bellamy's words, it resembles "a heavy-rock take on Goldfrapp." Also in Bellamy's words, "they will not control us." OK! Try and resist The Resistance's album art while you take a listen.

Those occasional high-pitched guitar/vocal squeals have something very much like this about them.

The Resistance is out 9/14 via Warner Bros.

Is it just me or are these guys joking with the lyrics? I always thought they were like a Ween version of Stadium rock but I guess these guys are serious, go figure.

Yeah I'm just hoping the rest of the album is more MUSE and less "we love Dr Who and Queen"...it's good to have influences, but no need to have them to in your face. I also wish the lyrics were pushed back a bit...I'm afraid they are taking themselves too seriously...too preachy. I have higher hopes for the remaining tracks.

NME made a good observation regarding the opening/closing theremin melody, it's very Dr. Who, which really doesn't do the song any favours.
I thought the only redeeming thing about this album would be it's artwork, since they had Storm Thorgerson design their last two covers, but that too is laughable.

This song and the other song suck. Muse is one of those bands that has always left me wondering if they're on the brink of an innovative breakthrough that would see them carving out their own sound after relying heavily on equally innovative influences, or just a band that would fall victim to the cliches of those influences. The answer is apparent: They've chosen the former.

I like it (Uprising). I am a huge Muse fan and but also understand the harsh criticism. Love the album artwork. Was not big on USOE(+C D). Everyone has said that a "rock opera" was inevitable for Muse, and now we are going to get it. I think it is different but good at the same time. I bet money they return to their "Origin" roots next album. I mean come on, how bout a little credit for this three-piece? They are better than any EMO crap out there, and more listenable than most of these generic indie bands that are indecipherable from one to the next.

Not a Muse fan,
but I mean this song does know what's going on. It's really "wound up" and the production has placed the instruments and vocals in the right places to make the song, which could potentially be grating (like Origin of symmetry perhaps) into kind of a psychotic quilt. For now, I say thumbs up.

I laughed out loud to this.

As someone who has recently gone through Muse's entire discography I can agree with pretty much everything that is said in this thread. Muse's lyrics are god awful which they are 90% of the time. 90% of their music is stadium anthem ready. "Uprising", predictably, commits both of these sentiments, with a dash of annoying political-ness. It really isn't so bad when you ignore the lyrics but then again there are bands that produce songs that you don't have to do that to.

Either way, I'm exited. Matt doesn't seem to be taking himself seriously on the lyrics or subject matter. I mean, he bursts out in laughter every interview where he's asked about United States of Eurasia. And he's always making fun of himself for being so interested in all that conspiracy theory crap. The problem is, 90% of Muse fans take that shit seriously and that's where it gets annoying. So as long as I can avoid those people, I think I'll enjoy the album just fine.

Far better than United States of Eurasia, I actually feel like this is a Muse track rather than a "Muse as Queen" or "Muse as Millionaire" etc track. As for the lyrics, I feel Muse as entered that territory "I don't care how ridiculous your politcal sentiment is, as long as you rock" RATM and Refused both espouse debunked socialist ideologies, but they absolutely are tight and are great bands. So what Matt Bellamy is wearing a tinfoil hat way too tightly, they still deliver the goods sonically.

if you read the article in nme muse says that they have just taken the events going on (mainly in england) and overstated them in a way in their songs. and they do laugh at their own lyrics and songs on the resistance so i dont think that they are totally serious.

Some harsh words here! A lot of new music is pure crap, you really have to wade through it to find the halfway decent stuff, but Muse has real talent. The music, the guitar riffs, the vocals, all unique and of high quality, and the lyrics definitely aren't as bad as some make them out to be. Frankly, we should all be happy with rock stars who are aware of some of the shit that's going on in our society today, even happier that they are willing to make a social commentary of it through their music! Very very happy with "Uprising" as the first single off "The Resistance". As per usual in the industry, the first single will be more market and air-wave worthy, but once we get our hands on the whole album we will find the hidden treasures and gems that we know Muse will deliver.

Ok look, what is wrong with you people? Muse are by far the best band in the world today, and I challenge you to show me someone better. A criticism of Muse for not being original is ridiculous; they have such a diverse and original sound. 'Muse's lyrics are awful'? Please tell me why you think they are so awful. And how many other artists can you name whose lyrics are better? Maybe these lyrics aren't the pretentious, 'deep and meaningful' ramblings of other artists that you enjoy. They are simple, straightforward and yet intelligent. And Muse are simply the best band today.

I'm sorry, but last time I checked, the concept of Eurasia dated back to ancient times. And, Eurasia has a population of 4.8 billion, and makes up 71% of the entire world population, so if Muse are to be considered the best band in the world by 71% of everyone, then that's fine by me.

"OMG!1! LOL! MUSE COPIED THIS, AND THIS, AND THIS!". Being human, you can find familiar patterns in everything. Yes, that is everything.

I'm going to make this simple and short. All you 'music critic know-it-alls' should be thankful that there exists at least one band today that doesn't fucking suck in the mainstream.

And for all you people saying 'they were once good,' welcome change. If not, go fuck off, this isn't the band for you. Muse write shit lyrics? HAHA. Could you not be any more of a newer fan? Three words, Origin of Symmetry; Screenager is the most sophisticated song I've heard from any band.

The best part is that if they just continued in the same exact style as on OoS or Absolution, or any of their other albums, everybody would be on them for being "unoriginal" and just doing the same thing over and over.

Each successive album represents a step in the evolution of the band. Listen to them in order and the progression is clear and beautiful.

The world needs more stadium anthems. There's plenty of other stuff you can listen to by yourself on your headphones in the corner of your depressed room.

Well I think I like it. It's very different from "old muse"; personally I like Showbiz and OoS but there you go.

I can hear "Call Me" by Blondie, I can hear Goldfrapp (yes) and also "My Own Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode.

None of these influences are bad, they're all actually very good artists.

You can't knock the production of this record though, it genuinely is perfect; even if not to my taste. I prefer the screaming vocals and shredding guitar.

MUSE - Great musicians, talented song-writers, definitely trying to push boundaries.... BUT I am a little suspcious of what I have heard from Resistance so far. I must wait for album and maybe they'll grow on me.

Good point here, but I honestly feel they had found their own unique sound and carved a true niche from them selves from an early point. This and certain tracks on the last album though seem to be massive steps backwards, pouring out other peoples sounds. It's the nature of art to tribute and homage other work, but I feel like they are over doing it here and are going to loose alot of fans.

Personally I also think they need to step back from the political message for a little while as it seems to be lacking passion. 'Take a bow' is the type of message I want to hear from these guys not contrived rambling. It just seems a little rushed for them

I will however stick with this band for a long time and happily listen to their lesser appreciated tracks as I know they have some serious gems to come and I am sure this album has some truely great tracks on it.

SOmeone mentioned Radiohead as a better band....I can respect them but their music to me is ok. It really doesn't do anything for me.

Muse on the other hand does and for that I feel they are a better band. It is all about taste and preference. Right? A good steak or bad steak can be different to different people but we can all enjoy the party right? Enjoy this track that is better than all the stupid pop on radio and tv!

I used to listen quite a lot to Muse and I appreciate dearly their reach for the sky melodramatics, because they've made it work countless times, but this is not very good. Granted it's better than USoE.

Like Stereogum pointed out, it's a bit of a rip-off, which makes this even worse. Another frowning moment for me. I may give The Uprising a listen anyways. Will be a decisive album for me: is there something enjoyable left or have they completely lost it?

the radiohead comparisons are so 1999.
as a muse fan and a radiohead fan, the bands are so different i just dont think people should pass judgement until theyve heard the bands entire catalogue of work. if you dont like it, just say I DONT LIKE IT..not "this is bullshit this is crap, the lyrics are shit" stating as fact... its all subjective

its like saying i think all Muse haters on here are ugly fat people....as fact.

As long as Bellamy keeps singing like a dark angel prince I dont' care what the hell they do. If they go towards musical theater land all the better! The fact that some people think he's crazy or loony based on what he's saying just shows the typical mindset of Americans who clique together and make fun of the "weirdos". Isn't this why people love musicals and music and rock? Someone else gives us that overly dramatic voice of human power! woo hoo! I hope they still have some raunchy rock on here too, much as I adore my musicals.

And of course, carriemosshart, the early accusations that Muse had copied Radiohead were completely ridiculous. Muse did not steal their sound, their lyrics or any other musical content from Radiohead, the only similarity is that both bands' music has an incredible diversity and spanning of genres, and is brilliant.

And I just love it how Stereogum shamelessly influence bloggers by lending their opinion to their opening news story. And still no-one who attacked my opinions has replied after I attacked them back. Cowards...

I think Matt Bellamy is talking about the New World Order, The Reptilians and The Shapeshifters.
In 2006, he accepted that he is a David Icke fan. The artwork of the album seems like reptilian skin & alien invasion. This song is rare, only for the voice of Matt is obvious that is Muse, the rest does not seem like Muse. But is a great band, and they are big musicians. Matt is the best songwriter, pianist, guitarist and vocalist of the moment. I feel the best parts of this new album they will be the orchestral final movements. Once he said in a magazine, that the queen is a shapeshifter and he wants to start a revolution... (Beggining whit youngest minds?)
Muse is getting old and loosing freshness? Grettings from this hologramic world !!!

The good news: people won't accuse them of ripping off Queen with this song.
The bad news: now people will accuse them of ripping off Depeche Mode with this song.

No, in all seriousness though, I love Muse and I'm looking forward to their new album, but I'm a little disappointed with this song. It lacks the "oomph" that their songs usually have. And it sounds like a leftover track that didn't make the cut of BH&R. Supermassive Black Hole was more exciting than this. I like US of E, though. And I hope Resistance kicks ass. Muse is the best band currently around. They're kinda like a modern-day Queen. I'm not saying they're as good as Queen, no band will ever be, but compared to the talentless idiots making the drivel that is polluting the airwaves right now, Matt Bellamy is the only one worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence as Freddie Mercury. I hope they hit it out of the ballpark at the VMAs. Since the late 90s, music has been the same derivative crap, this probably the worst slump the music industry has ever seen, and I hope Muse takes us out of that slump and leads us into a new musical revolution.

I'm keeping my hopes up. :)

For everyone out there crying about the fact that Muse has influences, (which happens to put them in league with every other band in the history of music) try this one on for size. Matt Bellamy's father George Bellamy was the rhythm guitarist for the band, The Tornadoes. This might sound familiar to some stuff Muse has done. I don't know, I dont know if thats ok.. with all you folks, even being influenced by your own fathers music might be a crime. What a joke.

The truth is worth less all the time, it's nice to see a few people with media following not trying to cover everything up.

About Muse I find something very "amusing": it's not clear which is their best album or their best song, because that depends very much on individual tastes. They have to be original if you recognize a song being theirs even before hearing Bellamy's voice, and I bet you would suspect "Uprising" to be a Muse track by listening to it first time on a radio station. You can like it or not, you can criticize their influences or not, but it kinda sounds "different".

With each Muse album I've been reading things like "this is their best, terrific", and things like "so unoriginal, pretentious, overrated", or "their previous albums were better". To people that say they are going mainstream and that they preferred their previous style: tell me if "Bliss", "Hysteria" or "Time is running" didn't sound mainstream (last having Michael Jackson influences, goodness). To people that say they are unoriginal: tell me if you've ever listened to a mix between Queen, Chopin, Arabia and Petrouchka before (=United States of Eurasia). To people that say their lyrics are bad: tell me if "we are the champions my friend, we are the champions again, we are the champions, we are the champions..." or "I can't get no satisfaction I can't get no satisfaction 'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try I can't get no, I can't get no" are better. Just so you know, lyrics can be simple but meaningful.

You love them or you hate them, it seems. But watch a Muse concert and tell me Matt doesn't have "something different". He must have, when this post has so many comments.

I think Muse are one of the better bands around (not the best - that accolade goes to The Mars Volta in my humble opinion) even though knights of cydonia was a bit embarrassing. I'm not sure about this one (hand claps?). I like Bellamy's lyrics. There not brilliantly written but at least he sings about other things rather than the usual 'I iove you baby' teen tripe. They have an original sound. So what if there are traces of Queen, Radiohead and Bach (that's no bad thing). All musicians are inspired by those who went before as Muse will inspire those that will come later. Good on 'em!

i am all for supporting muse... but I'm definitely not for blind fanaticism. I know the band has been criticized for sounding like radiohead and having shallow lyrics sometimes, but the overall delivery has been so amazing it didn't even matter. Personally I didn't believe that they sounded at all like radiohead, you could say they were in the same genre but muse had its own distinct sound. The thing that upset me the most was Matthew saying they were laughing at the lyrics while they were writing it - and then they coupled it with the most trite music ever. At some point I feel like my ipod threw up new age Green Day and Goldfrapp and then shat some Queen on top. I am, of course, talking about their new songs. When I heard United States of Eurasia on the radio for the first time, my reaction was they sound like Queen. This was before I was exposed to the mass criticism that exactly paralleled what I said. If you have this kind of unanimous comparison... it's kind of hard to deny my allegations. A radio disc jockey said about the same thing a minute after I thought it.
For muse this time around, it's not about being innovative and getting criticized for it. I don't even know what they're doing. I just know every time I hear Uprising I feel this wave of nausea. Synthetic clapping. 'Come on's? How many songs is that shit in??? Even if they just took out that crap, the song would be infinitely better.
I have certain standards for muse, I'm not going to excuse their poor performance just because i loved them in the past. Knights of Cydonia should probably be slapped with this CD. I'm glad to see other people thought this song was embarrassing. I had to turn down the volume when they started screaming no one's going to take me alive blah blah blah repetitively . I never feel embarrassed for other people... except for that song. It sounds good live though. I don't quite understand that phenomenon.
Their b-sides sound better. It sounds more like my twisted and deranged muse.

yeah the hand claps were even cheesy when the Beatles did it in their early stuff but it was still the bloody Beatles! I am in no way trying to compare Muse to the Beatles here (that would be sacrilege) I'm just saying i think artistic license warrants the claps and "heys" in the "Uprising" song due to the underlying theme of revolution. It's a little studio trick used to give the song more of a "radio friendly" mass appeal vibe, a kind infiltration technique to further market the ideals expressed in the lyrics. Oh and BTW the hand claps (like those of the Beatles) aren't synthetic, just watch the YouTube video of the making of Uprising and you'll see all the blokes gathered round the microphone clapping their lilly white arses off. You'll also hear the lead singer himself say "this is ridiculous" to his mates. Cheerio!

"this song sounds like all these other bands."
name one band that isn't influenced by other great music.

"this is so different from their old stuff."
name one band that doesn't grow.

"muse lyrics suck."
matt writes about stuff thats controversial but relevant to today's world. its also what he is interested in. name one band that isn't influenced by the world around them.

"the album art looks like a 1st grade color by number art project."
oh my god. i can't believe people are judging the band by their cover art. muse has won awards for its cover art. try to find the deeper meaning behind it and you may just learn something.

"this song sucks"
its the first single off the album. give the rest of the album a chance.

bottom line, muse isn't afraid to take risks. and whether they turn out for the better or for the worse, at least they're doing more than most other mainstream bands are today. they aren't afraid to bring attention to deeper topics than your average fluffy love song crap. and as for all the people who say that muse is ripping off all of those other bands, i happen to be a big fan of muse as well as most of the other bands that were mentioned. and as a big fan this style of music, i don't have a problem with it. bands with similar styles are going to sounds similar. get over it and move on.

(Coldplay, keane , Razorlight etc).Every band nowadays are influenced by other bands past and present. They are clearly influeced by bands like Queen, Pink Floyd,Radiohead.bellamy even sings in similar style to Thom Yorke. They are daft, have some silly lyrics but they can produce some excellent music.Muse and arcade fire are two of the best bands around. P.S. Definitely can hear Blondie's 'Call me' in this song

Muse has been my favorite band for a couple years now. My previous fave was RHCP so I can't be too upset about anything lyrically... Any band that can pull off anything along the lines of queen's sound gets credit, they were kind of a big deal. Matt didn't over do it so its all good. Uprising is good but I feel like they could have done a little more with it instrumentally... Maps of the problematic is a better song in that regard. Still a lot of great energy though and Matt is an absolute genius at composing a universe of new sound that rocks and gets ur foot/head grooving. I hope to hear some more instrumental excellence on the primaries (drums + guitars) in the rest of the album but experimenting is good for an album... just hope to hear some more origin of symmetry jam based stuff in the future with transcendent piano riffs like in bliss, sunburn, butterflies and hurricanes, and space dementia.

There are only seven notes in western music theory. Of those seven notes a limited number of various scales and modes can be constructed. Of all the scales and modes only a handful have traditionally been used in popular music. There are infinitesimal amounts of combinations possible when composing melodies and harmonies from these seven notes. If it were possible for one to listen to the entire history of popular music one would find exponential amounts of striking similarities in numerous different songs. There are also things called influences and homages. Now go fucking die already you pretentious droves of automatonic "too cool for you" hipster elitist swine. If it doesn't sound enough like one band it aint good enough but if it sounds kinda like another it's a rip off? Ever heard of Folk music? Art has always been appropriated and passed down from one generation to another. Try appreciating it for what it is instead of what it's comparable to! Funny that one of the most unique acts of our time is indicted for being unoriginal while the entertainment industry drowns in the muck of dreadful mediocrity and people eat it up. Muse has the best of both worlds: the subversive edge of "underground" music coupled with a mass appeal to rattle the minds of the youth afflicted with redundancy, besides they just fuckin rock. They stole the show at the VMA's yet all you heard about on the television was what Kanye did to Taylor Swift...in the words of Charlie Brown "good grief!" Rock and roll has always been about rebellion and Muse evokes a sense of counter culture revolt in their lyrics with a simplicity that isn't lost on the mainstream consumer. What good is preaching revolution if it's only to the quire? If you find that annoying then maybe you are just too edgy to dig anything that anyone other than your own snobby little tribe of cool cats approves of or maybe you're just getting old and starting to sound alot like your parents! Maybe you should all have heart attacks along with the fat cats. Pussies!

I'm sorry but I feel this is a cliche wanna be epic band mimicing their own influences. Is it just me or are their lyrics so one dementional? Im not going to say they suck I do listen to them and its definately far better than the endless parade of cookie cutter rock and hiphop coming out these days but they are nothing new, nothing amazing. If it wasnt for their fast, technical guitar playing which definately gets the blood pumping at the gym, I'd probably not have them on my ipod.

Pfft, Nirvana's kinda overrated if you ask me. I mean, yes they made some great music, but let's face it, their success would've never been the case if people hadn't grown so sick of 80s hair metal that a rap album from Kermit The Frog would've been a welcome change. Muse didn't become successful because they came at a time when people were desperate for a new type of music. Muse has managed to create and sustain success in the face of numerous music trends that have dominated music over the past decade: Britpop, bubblegum pop, hip-hop, nu metal, small-time indie music. And they did it all without ever giving into any of those trends. They've always insisted on marching to the beat of their own drum, and it has always worked. They did it without Rolling Stone or Time magazine kissing their asses on a daily basis like they kissed Nirvana's. As a matter of fact, they haven't even conquered America and they're huge. And Matt Bellamy is a better singer, guitarist and songwriter than Kurt Cobain. Not to mention Muse is a far more versatile band than Nirvana. So there you go.

I didn't quite understand the album at first but I took a walk in the park just now listening to it. I feel I have a grasp on it more now.

In my opinion it's a concept album about humanity. Love, power, struggle, evil, greed, hope, uprising, resistance, revolt, redemption...

The album ends with the hope of human redemption by leaving earth and starting anew from what we have become. "Spread, our codes to the stars"

"Let's start over again
Why can't we start it over again?

Just let us start it over again

And we'll be good
This time we'll get it...
We'll get it right

It's our last chance to forgive ourselves"

Or maybe it's about humanity leaving another planet and finding Earth which is kinda what the album art says to me. The figure seems to be looking towards Earth, not away.

Exogenesis - hypothesis that proposes life on Earth was transferred from elsewhere in the Universe but makes no prediction about how widespread it is

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panspermia

I thought Muse did a brilliant job with the album.
