New Massive Attack - "Splitting The Atom"
Moody broody UK trip-hop icons Massive Attack are on their way back with a four-song EP this October, featuring some highly promising vocal cameos including turns from TVOTR's Tunde Adibempe, Elbow dude Guy Garvey, and Martina Topley Bird. It's called Splitting The Atom, that's its artwork, and this is its title track, which premiered last night on Zane Lowe BBC show. "Splitting" features some guest singing from Horace Andy on a sinister, chilly tune that sounds like Gorillaz gone creepy as fuck.
The Splitting The Atom EP is out 10/5 via Virgin. Here's the tracklist:

To be clear, those remixes are new songs as well; their original instances are expected to appear on the forthcoming Massive Attack full-length(!) expected in February. Speaking of Gorillaz, Damon Albarn's reportedly on it, and you can be sure there'll be a slew more notable cameos. Keep you posted.

Interesting song, though. Feels like I'm back in the early 00's. And the new Gorillaz songs are brilliant... Are we seeing a trip-hop (but not trip-hop because they hate being referred to as) comeback, anyone?

I remember reading that Massive Attack did some sort of tribute to the UNKLE artwork, which makes me think that this may not actually be the artwork. Either that or they chose the tribute for their own artwork too.

And no they're not "trying to sound like tom waits." Dumbest shit I've ever heard. That's Daddy G singing and that's his natural voice. It's very deep and rough. He's always sounded that way.
How can anyone be so ignorant of such a legendary group? "Mezzanine" is essential listening for pretty much any music fan, and definetely one of the greatest albums of the 90s. If you had heard it, you would know Daddy G's voice. If you haven't heard it, well...you had better fix that. That's like not knowing "Loveless" or "OK Computer" of "Endtroducing" or "The Chronic." It's a fucking classic.
Their last album was pretty average (especially held up next to Mezzanine), but this next one is starting to sound quite amazing. It might be a big return, not unlike Portishead's last year.

Some years ago, between mezzanine and 100th window, Tom Waits was going to collaborate in the new Massive Attack album, in fact it was defined as a Massive Attack/Tom Waits new album, but things didn't turned out finally. Daddy G went on hiatus and, as you will know by now, 3D created a 100th window mostly on his own.
So it's not that weird that this song sounds like Tom Waits, not only the voice, but the vibe.

Oddly enough, I have been just naturally listening to a lot of trip hop lately, it's great for so many moods/vibes...I even found myself craving to hear Tricky's Blow Back album the other day. I would say Bat For Lashes is even a little trip-hoppy, and that's a great album too...bring it on' back y'all---

Portishead is one of my favorite bands. But even I have to admit their last release blew. They struggled to make that album. Funny how so many folks like to pretend how much they love esoteric albums. All these critics/fans talking about how great it was. What horseshit. You know they never listened to that album more than once. (Oh, by the way, this Massive Attack track is sweet.)

My vote for the WORST thing I've ever heard out of Massive Attack! A one-note riff that wears out it's welcome after two minutes - but unfortunately, there's almost 5 minutes to go! This is all they could come up with in SIX YEARS?! No wonder the album has taken so long to complete. What a disappointment!

more like leonard cohen than tom waits imho. but less interesting. loved the new songs on the 08 tour with yolanda quartey and stephanie dosen, but last night at brixton it was really dull, new songs didnt inspire at all sadly. the bar only emptied when unfinished sympathy came on. how can they take so long to just loop one sequence for 5 mins and put some lame vocals on top. big shame. they should stop looking for 'name' talents like albarn and stick with people who are hungry and who have energy to bring to the table. oh well..
