New Wolfmother - "New Moon Rising"

thubmnail icon: New Wolfmother - "New Moon Rising"

The fluffy Australian quartet's about to release their second album Cosmic Egg, which comes packaged in very literal album art (some poor little kid stuck taking in the egg by his lonesome). Wolfmother's sporting a different lineup -- only Andrew Stockdale remains from the original pack -- so the collection's puffed-up and psyched-out first single "New Moon Rising" also feels kind of literal. (And that main guitar riff kind of feels like it belongs to Lenny Kravitz, if he's ever actually owned anything, natch.)

Cosmic Egg is out 10/13 via Interscope.

How much you wanna bet that egg is filled with acid...

WAS filled with acid. Wolfmother found it and made this album... now it's empty.

I feel similarly about Wolfmother and Jet. Both bands play really good impressions of older music, and I like them both for it. But how long can it last? Jet just had another album out, I hardly noticed. Let's hope Wolfmother can evolve enough to stay interesting.

Any story about Wolfmother is a good excuse to link to this:

These comments are bogus. This band is and has always has been a complete joke. Thus site is partially owned by Interscope with in turn is owned by universal. Every day there is at least one or two pieces about a universal band on Stereogum. If you don't believe me, do your research and you'll find out for yourself. It's the new digital payolla. Wolfmother is on Modular recordings which is a joint venture of universal and emi. Nobody gives a shit about that pathetic band. The music industry is a fucking sham.

this site seems to pan universal's biggest acts (u2, the killers) so your conspiracy theory doesn't make sense.

That is true, and they're not exactly kind to Wolfmother here (unless you consider music being compared to Lenny Kravitz' a compliment). However, the obligation may simply be to report on the artists (which they do), they may not have to be nice about them; any publicity is good publicity, right?

We have no obligation to write about anything! Jeez people. The only people who decide what goes on this site are me, Amrit, and Brandon. (No, not BuzzMedia either!)
Re: Wolfmother, it is newsworthy. And that this is the 3rd most commented post from Friday shows you guys are interested. (That isn't the only factor determining coverage, obviously, but it is a factor.) Don't worry, we won't be covering this release in depth. Probably the first video, though. And Mike Patton's response if he has one.

best avatar choice ever, i think. "ohhh! I seeee! ahhh!"

also, yeah. wolfmother's vaguely cool. covering something and declaring an undying love for it are, surprisingly, not the same thing.

I never really liked them myself... but accidently saw three of them play an unadvertised gig at 2am at White Trash in Berlin last Saturday. They rock live.

I don't know how far the retro thing will go, but I've got to say they do a damned good job of it. Jet is pretty one-dimensional, but this dude knows how to write some good songs. New or retro, it's cool.

Check out this video, where Andrew is discussing the new album. He seems a bit stoned: http://www.soundvenue.com/play/videoer/2009/08/15/beatday-2009-wolfmother

Good song. I was wondering when these Aussies where going to put out a new album. Too bad it will receive poor reviews by Stereogum, since it's not by Grizzly Bear.

Longer version has him saying his about to do a record of 60s Italian music about 10 seconds before he says "excuse me, but what year are we in???!!!??". It's an alright point, but I don't really see why *he* thinks it is. Maybe you're only allowed to revive genres that don't have mainstream appeal?

This is better than their initial stuff. Sounds less like they stole all their riffs and less generic.

i preferred the debut album to 'new moon rising' and 'back round'. new moon in particular feels overly simplistic, and the absence of a guitar solo kind of irks me. hope this doesn't reflect the whole album's sound!! (also, what's up with that? stockdale said it was supposed to be a double album, but i only see 12 tracks on the official tracklisting. i feel let down)

ouch. andrew stockdale should probably not be allowed to speak in public. however, i've really liked this band for a long time. they put on a fantastic live show. music doesn't have to be complex or obscure to be enjoyable. there are worse things than a band that's riffy and slightly predictable.

How epic, the only thing more intense than wolfmother's fans, are it's critics. QQ very sad. you don't like Wolfmother and I'm still ok with that.
