Sonic Youth's The Eternal Album Art & Tracklist

thumbnail icon: Sonic Youth's The Eternal Album Art & Tracklist

We were told the new Sonic Youth album, their 16th, was going to include black metal-inspired lyrics and "heavy ass weirdo hooks" but nobody let us know about the John Fahey album art: The brilliant finger-picking guitarist and writer's (check out How Bluegrass Music Destroyed My Life) red, white, and black pigments adorn The Eternal's front cover. (Sorta black metal, at least in color scheme.) Fahey died in 2001. The collection includes a track "Leaky Lifeboat (for Gregory Corso)" -- Corso also died in 2001. I haven't heard The Eternal, so I can't tease out too many themes based on song titles and packaging, but maybe it goes back to the '01 and post-'01 explored on Murray Street. Then again, there's a song for Bobby Pyn, aka Darby Crash. Regardless, here's how it's looking:

The band's the eternal core of Kim, Lee, Steve, and Thurston with Mark Ibold. The track list:

01 "Sacred Trickster"
02 "Anti-Orgasm"
03 "Leaky Lifeboat (For Gregory Corso)"
04 "Antenna"
05 "What We Know"
06 "Calming The Snake"
07 "Poison Arrow"
08 "Malibu Gas Station"
09 "Thunderclap For Bobby Pyn"
10 "No Way"
11 "Walkin Blue"
12 "Massage The History"

The Eternal is out 6/9 via Matador.

Terrible band. They've got nothing on Coldplay. Daydream Nation = total trash.

It's Sonic Youth!!
Yeah, they have just been around FOREVER!!
Grizzly Bear can't touch them

i think comparing grizzly bear and sonic youth is possibly the worst thing I've ever seen. So entirely different. What the fuck??

Also, just to play devil's advocate, just because you are around forever and put out a shitload of albums, doesn't make you amazing. Their releases have been very spotty as of late.

You obviously haven't listened to their recent albums. Rather Ripped and Sonic Nurse were both ridiculous.

Quite possibly the greatest band ever. Sure, they're getting a little old, but they are allowed to do whatever the fuck they want. Anyone who disses them should have their record collection taken away because you fail miserably.

I will most definitely be looking foward to track number 2.

And people are so freaking annoying some times. You can't compare some newbies that have not yet proven their worth to living legends like these guys!

Let's put a hold on this stupid super freaky fandom around here. Shall we?

I think people are comparing apples to oranges here. Grizzly Bear make very atmospheric music while Sonic Youth make super guitar heavy music. The two make very great, but very different music. However Sonic Youth seem to have more going for them both because of what the style of the album seems to be and also having Mark Ibold on board as well, while we haven't heard much about what the next Grizzly Bear album will be like. Time will tell however.

oh god, let's not even start this comparison that has no absolute base whatsoever. absolute rubbish. completely different things and different timelines. the comments really get annoying, can't believe i'm doing it too... i'm happy for SY and for GB, i love music, you should too.

I clicked the tag with the intent of reading more Sonic Youth news, instead I found only Sonnic Youth news! Ho ho.

I'm very excited about this and diggin' the album cover. Their Gefen albums could have had better art so I'm thinking the move to an indie is even more so a bonus in that regard. The font kind of reminds me of Fucked Up's latest. Matador typography buddies?

This cover sux. What is that typeface? Times New Viking?

Times New Viking as the typeface? That was either a joke so sophisticated, it flew right over all our heads or you're honestly pants-on-head retarded.

Jesus Christ, you people. Not every post has to devolve into X is greater or worse than Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective.

I like both Sonic Youth and Grizzly Bear quite a lot (not so much an AC fan, BUT THAT'S JUST ME), and I am very excited for both of these albums to come out. I've really been into everything they've done since Murray Street, so I will not be displeased if it's in a similar, more accessible vein.

For fuck's sake though, stop these baseless comparisons. They were never funny, and you look like tools (regardless of whether you're being ironic or not about it) for doing it.

Never had a chance to see Sonic Youth live until they opened for Pearl Jam on their '06 tour, saw them 5x that tour, and wow. It's both rare and amazing when a venue is 80% packed for the opening band, and when the cheers are just about as loud as when the main band comes out!

That was a good bill. Rather Ripped was good...looking forward to this next one as well.

No one else wants to comment on the fact that Mark Ibold is playing on this record? Pavement's Mark Ibold?

That seems like a big deal to me...

i was going to say something about how Mark most likely played all the bass lines because kim is no good at bas but then i realized Thurston most likely plays them on the records anyways.
