Wilco (The Album Art)

thubmnail icon: Wilco (The Album Art)

Remember when Wilco album covers used to look like this? Even this? Well if Wilco's Wilco (The Album) album title didn't totally deconstruct any lingering whiff of pomo self-seriousness, welcome to the camel party. Via P4K, you are looking at the cover to Wilco's new album: six empty chairs, two humps, one orange cake, and one big LOL. We first heard "Wilco (The Song)" on The Colbert Report. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if they premiered an album stream on colbertnation.com. It's out 6/30 via Nonesuch. Here's a tracklist:

01 "Wilco (The Song)"
02 "Deeper Down"
03 "One Wing"
04 "Bull Black Nova"
05 "You And I"
06 "You Never Know"
07 "Country Disappeared"
08 "Solitaire"
09 "I'll Fight"
10 "Sonny Feeling"
11 "Everlasting Everything"

OhI Does that camel have on a Birthday Party Hat!? I get it now. Oh that's so clever. Those Wilco guys -- they are genius, aren't they?

Wilco (the album) is pretty weak, I'm very disappointed thus far. For those who think that YHF was Wilco's last stand you're all morons. You seriously don't think A Ghost is Born and Sky Blue Sky were any good? Please, those albums were great, but I agree that this new one sucks

Hey, you guys who worked this photo shoot for Wilco—can you tell me the location? I lived in Chicago for years, and this reallllly looks to me like it was shot in Lincoln Square near that Brauhaus restaurant, but I'm not sure. Muchas gracias!

Per the cover, I have a feeling that this album is going to be as bad as "Ishtar." Wilco have slid into mediocrity faster than any band this decade not named The White Stripes. Sad to say, but Jeff Tweedy needs Jay Bennett like Michael Jackson needs Quincy Jones.

How so? Wilco was once a great band... and since YHF they've slipped a bit. All Wilco fans, myself included, hope Wilco (The Album) is their return to AAA material, but given the quality of their last two albums, I think it was a fair statement. I just don't understand why the commentors on this site continue to give Wilco a free pass and act like they haven't tarnished their legacy and disappointed their hardcore fans with sub-standard albums like AGiB and SBS. You're defending a band that simply put never lived up to the expectations. Like so many great bands before them, they only had 2 or 3 great albums in them, instead of the 4 or 5 we thought were possible after the release of YHF. But again, here's hoping Wilco (The Album) kicks a$$!

No, please don't listen to it again. It sounds as bad the next time as it did the first time. And the second time, and the third, and the . . . Don't know why he started trying to channel a cheesy 70's Mellow-Gold vocalist on top of sonic mish-mash. His vocal style changed so dramatcally after YHF. YHF is one of the greatest albums of all time--definitely a tragic and sudden fall from greatness. Don't even get me going on the yawn-fest called SkyBlueSky.

I will say that I did enjoy the last Loose Fur album (from 2006), though I'm sure Jim O'Rourke deserves more of the credit on that than Tweedy does. (It also features one of the coolest booklets I've ever seen. Check it out.)

Doesn't look like a Wilco album..maybe a Beirut cover?? Camels..and gypsy tambourines. I like it. Still, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot has to be one of the finer looking vinyls.

The album cover rocks. It's silly but there's something else going on too. Very much like a 70's classic rock album cover. Think "Morrison Hotel". And Sky Blue Sky rocks you f**kin punks. It doesn't have to experiment to be masterful. If they'd released Sky Blue Sky right after Summerteeth you all would've shot your shorts. I mean, if you were born yet. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is brilliant but if I'm not in the mood it's fucking noisy (which doesn't happen with OK Computer, which says something).

I think that anyone who is critical of the most recent wilco albums, doesnt know much about playing music. the last two wilco albums may not of had the same structures as foxtrot but foxtrot was different tham summerteeth and both were different than being there. plus this was a disjointed band on ghost and technically you could say that both ghost and sky blue sky were "first albums" due to the inconsistancies in the line up. so watch out for this configuration of wilco because when this set of musicians hits their stride, the stars will explode.

I've been a Tweedy fan since the UT days, and I don't think they have slipped at all. Sky Blue Sky is actually my favorite WILCO album now.

and have you seen the new DVD? It is fantastic. And Nels Cline is f'ing amazing.

P.S.-I thought their name is WILCO (all caps) not Wilco. Why is it in lowercase on the album?

and i have no idea how anyone can talk sh*t about a ghost is born...it's beyond comprehension...

the reason you're all complaining about SBS and this is b/c jeff doesn't have issues anymore, and his music reflects that...you want the darker side of tweedy that we saw on summerteeth, YHFT and GIB...but face it, unless he gets hooked on pills again or gets a divorce, he's just going to write you some good songs and call it a day...just stop complaining, it is what it is...how many songs have you written?

Dang, the comments have set a new high for RADICAL! Keep up the good work. I thoroughly enjoyed what each and every one of you think. And now I will forget what I was going to say, and not be able to think any longer without a comment so profound. Thank you once again. It is the beginning of a wonderful new world with comments such as the ones I just read in reference to the new Wilco album 'Wilco (the album)'. I am very much in the debt of people who have such wonderful opinions and comments. I hope one day to be a first, or at least a second that thought I was first but ended up being second, or even third. It would be an accomplishment indeed. Anyway, thank you all once again for giving me a new reason to carry on. These comments were truly inspiring. Im going to go to sleep early and wake up and try to leave a good comment on a message board or a few, or a lot. Maybe I could be first or second, but I hope to at least be in the top 20 so I can hope to have my comment read and, possibly, affect someone the way you all have affected me today. Before I wrote this, I was horribly depressed and very bored and lethargic, but now I feel I have a new lease on life. Thank you commenters, thank you whole heartedly. Really... Really... Bored. Thank you.

In a sea of mind-numbingly dull and unimaginative "musicians", Wilco stands as a band that always takes an interesting step in a new direction each time they head into the studio. There is no one Wilco album that recalls another, they each have their own unique quality. If you attempt to make some new and meaningful music each time you record, you're bound to let down a few fans of previous work. There's no way around it. But they also gain a few new ones along the way, and that's exactly why Tweedy is still relevant and has people anxious to hear his stuff 20 years after "No Depression". If he kept pumping out "Foxtrot" every two years, interest would have peaked and fallen well before now.

WIlco (The Album) may be their weakest record (except for A.M., possibly), but part of its problem is that Wilco fans come to it with so much baggage. There are a fair amount of decent songs on the record; people who aren't familiar with the band might in some ways appreciate those songs more. I wrote an article about this (sort of) on my site.
