YACHT Unveil Seizure-Friendly See Mystery Lights Cover Art

thumbnail icon: YACHT Unveil Seizure-Friendly See Mystery Lights Cover Art

When we were down in Austin (last year) asking terrible Texas trivia questions of any rockers who were bored enough to answer, Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans of Team YACHT went off-topic to discuss a recent conquest: bringing iconic album cover designer Boyd Elder out of retirement. Boyd composed the art for the Eagles' Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, and now his CV includes work on YACHT's DFA debut. That's just a still photo of the See Mystery Lights; the full experience involves holographic foil, which is a technical term for "epileptics might want to look elsewhere." Jona and Claire explain:

See Mystery Lights is inspired by the "Mystery Lights," an unexplained paranormal and optical phenomenon indigenous to triad sites around the world, including Marfa, Texas. In homage to this, the album art is printed with a holographic foil which renders the art ephemeral, susceptible to tricks of light. It is impossible to get a feeling for the effect without holding the actual album in your hand. We have animated the online display in order to approximate this phenomenon.

You can see it illustrated at seemysterylights.com (careful). Triangles are heavily incorporated, and there are many good reason for that, all detailed in this handy PDF file. Last summer YACHT unveiled "Summer Song," a love letter to James Murphy which impressed him enough in its emotion and DFA-banger redolence that he signed the duo to the label for their new album. You've seen the fun times video, now there is MP3:

He played this song live ages ago that went "Will I go to heaven, or will I go to hell? It's my understanding that none of those are real." Which track is that? WHICH TRACK IS THAT?!

Why can't album covers just be album covers anymore?

Despite this unsettling "art," I am sure this record will be fantastic.
