Anton Newcombe On Bill O’Reilly On Letterman

Hammer Of Truth blogged:

"In arguably one of the angriest (and possibly most notable) moments of David Letterman's television career — during a heated exchange with guest Bill O'Reilly on Tuesday's Late Show — Letterman let rip on the Iraq War."
REAL | WIN

I know what you're thinking: But what's Anton Newcombe's take? Let us know if you decode it. The page hurts my eyes.

PREVIOUSLY IN ANTON: "What has Eric Clapton ever done except throw his baby off a fuckin' ledge and write a song about it?"

I dont' really get the sense that Newcombe has an opinion one way or another. His take on it seems more descriptive than anything else.

As far as Letterman's opinion, it seems mostly to rely on weak generalizations ("why are we there in the first place?") and irrelevant emotional positioning ("have you ever lost a loved one in combat?")

While it's good to see some emotion from someone like Letterman on the mainstream late night shows, it would be nice if there were more substance to the "robust debate" that O'Reilly mentioned. All we're really seeing here is two people who disagree with each other agreeing to disagree.

I'm no O'Reilly/Bush fan, but Letterman certainly didn't advertise his intelligent side in that interview.

But all political leanings aside, Paul Schaffer truly is a fantastic musician.....How 'bout some .mp3's for his hot new tracks????

I just wish Dave had called out O'Reilly's lies about the two Christmas incidents. Both of those have been denied or clarified by the school districts, yet Bill continues to treat them as true. The thing in Texas was completely false, while the changing of the words in Silent Night makes sense in the context of the full story.

What the hell is "Em One Six"? I assume he's talking about MI6, the British Intelligence Service. In which case how is it possible that someone in his position doesn't know that? I mean, I know that, and the only reason I clicked on the clip was because I thought it might have Kevin Federline in it.

Bill O' Reilly clearly doesn't want robust debate with anyone... that would imply he would change his opinions should someone make a better point.
And whats more relevant is he doesn't allow anyone else to have a differing opinion. Two cases in point: Cindy Sheehan and France, whom he boycotted.
Anyways, I thought Letterman gave him hell and deservedly. You can't discount the emotional aspect of war, the families left behind, the death and killing. And Iraqis have it the hardest with suicide bombings and all the innocent fatalities during the fighting. To say say that Letterman relyed too much on 'irrelevant emotional positioning' completely ignores this, and that's just plain ignorant.
Anyway, I don't think Lettermans format allows robust debate... pity though. That damn 'O Reilly. How does he still function in his bullshit 'No Spin' zone? God damn.

Letterman sounded as if he didn't really know WHY he was saying what he was saying. He could have debated much better had he talked less from emotion and more from reason.
I'm not an O'Reilly fan, but I have to agree with him regarding the Sheehan comment.

Bill's excuse for intelligence mistakes is that Britain, Russia, etc. all thought Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

Let's say I take a road trip to Vegas. I beg/bribe/intimidate by buddies into coming with me. On the way we get totally lost and I say, "Hey, you guys had access to the same directions I did."

When we finally get there, we blow all of our money on the first day and have no gas money for the way home. I say, "What the hell did you think was going to happen? This is Vegas!"

The (obvious) point is that there are different levels of responsibility for fucking shit up.

I'm surprised by Letterman. Most talk show hosts never speak their mind or take their guests to task. He didn't do it very well, but I'm happy he tried. Bill O'Reilly is a douchebag. Guess what, the insurgents are freedom fighters asshole, they are fighting for what they believe to be "their freedom". Let's Dave starts a trend where all TV talking heads take all these right wing evil assholes to task!!

Meh, after all I've read about this I'm not remotely impressed in the least. To act like Letterman "really gave it to O'Reiley" in any kind of way is a huge overstatement. Yes, he disagreed. No, he didnt sound like he had a clue as to what he was actually even trying to say (other than he obviously thinks he doesnt like O'Reilly), and in no way did he "let it rip" or "give it to him". Wow, he stated his opinion, though his opinion was more or less all over the place and oversimplified. Yes, people dying is sad. Yes, we should feel bad for those people. No, I'm not going to sympathize with terrorists, and at the same time no I'm not going to stand up for the excuses the goverment has used for going to war. That doesnt mean that the whole thing is black and white and easily one-sided, or that I should immediately start spouting every ridiculous bit of rhetoric I hear from either side.

I'm just unimpressed with how much hype there's been over this supposed "arguement". It was little more than a weak conversation with next to no substance on either side. BFD.

At least Dave has the balls to let his views be known, even if he was caught up by his own anger. There is no way in hell Leno would ever even broach such a subject, let alone press the issue and air his personal opinion. Neither would Conan, or Jimmy, or Craig.

I wonder if Dave would bristle at criticism of the mother of a dead soldier, if she, say, endorsed nuking Mecca as a response to her son's death. Is the moral authority of a dead soldier's mother really "absolute"? Or just absolute if you happen to agree with her?

letterman shows here his common sensical side. in the end, he's just a former weatherman from indiana. here he essentially says, how can you not empathize with cindy sheehan, she lost her son. o'reilly isn't having it because he's a right wing mouthpiece shill. neither person sounds very smart, but dave at least has a heart. clearly dave has a problem with o'reilly as a person, and maybe saw outfoxed, the documentary about him.

I watch dave every couple of nights. he's more natural than leno to me. I like a lot about him. this is the sort of emotion I might also throw at o'reilly if I given half a chance. though I might also throw a chair at him.

The funny thing is, Bill is supposed to know how to deflect Dave's kind of criticism. That's his whole job. Obviously, the product presented on Fox is highly controlled and fine-tuned. Left to his own devices, a dumb weatherman from Indiana can easily trip him up. Not that Dave really won, but Bill certainly didn't either.
Anyway, any confirmation on the Sufjan rumor? He's special.

ABSOLUTELY, I agree that David Letterman has no idea what the hell is he talking about and was operating strictly from an irrational emotional basis. While I don't agree with Bill O'Reilly on everything, he clearly had the rational upper-hand in this "so-called debate". Leterman, like so many other misinformed people in the media today stick to blanket questions like, "why are we there?" and personal insults like, "i have a feeling 60% of what you say is crap". hehe. no basis whatsoever for that insult. as Bill O'Reilly said, "give me an example".

oh and by the way, we are in IRAQ not to save the iraqi people, not to find WMDs, but to rid the world of a malicious state that sponsored terrorists which directly attacked the United States. Pretty easy answer people. Don't know why it's so hard for Republicans to say that. It's also the reason why we're going to attack Iran pretty soon.

"Cindy lost her son, so if you didn't lose your son, you can't criticize her"

That's the dumbest thing I ever heard. So if Hitler lost his son...and I didn't...I can't criticize him? Do people who lose family members all of sudden have immunity to criticism and can do whatever they want? They can exploit their family member's death any way they want? That's ridiculous. And to even think that is a valid response is both juvenile and absurd.

the only reason Iraq "sponsors" terrorist activities or "harbors" terrorists is because it's a fucking mess over there right now- not a very well policed state... and why? Because we dismantled their government a couple of years ago. So then why ARE we over there? To clean up the mess we created under false pretenses....oh, and then there's a bunch of oil over there but I'm sure that has nothing to do with anything.

finally saw the clip... that was a bit anti-climactic.

o'reilly's an idiot, and dave's emotion got the better of him, so he came off arguing emotionally rather than logically. i don't get o'reilly's position - just because we're now in a war, we can't question or criticize how or why we got to war? we're supposed to turn a blind eye to the possibly intentional misleading information used by the administration? you gotta love, too, how subtly o'reilly turns criticism of the bush administration into an implied critique of the integrity of the soldiers. what an ass-clown.

and no, cindy sheehan doesn't have carte blanche to do what she wants because she lost her son in a war. but comparing her to hitler is hardly appropriate. what she does have is the right to comment on that same war in which her son was killed - a war she believes is misguided. it's no different than if a family praised the war effort if they lost their son, because they all believe the war is fundamentally a good thing. it's their right, and allows them to honor their familial beliefs in death. i think that's what dave was trying to say.

oh, and lol at o'reilly saying he respects people's opinions. what a joke... this from the guy that called the aclu "anti-american".

Of course you're also aware that before the invasion, Iraq had no ties to Al Qaeda, the "terrorists which directly attacked the United States." Saddam was a mostly secular despot, the Al Qaeda guys are relegious extremists. They hated him (until we made him a rallying post).

Look, it's easy to pick on O'Reilly because he, after all, is a pompous, arrogant, self righteous ass, but I lost some respect for Letterman when I saw that. Instead of picking apart O'Reilly's argument in a coherent, literate way, he stooped to random refutes like "Why are we there in the first place?" Good job Dave, didn't see that nugget of insight coming.
Myself being someone who tends to learn a lean a little on the conservative (well, libertarian) side, O'Reilly is clearly an idiot, but Dave really showed why he should stick to comedy as his politics certainly aren't "notable".

Feel free too, but its pointless. We're there, in the 2004 election, people picked Bush cause they thought it was the right thing to do, and he's here for 3 more years. Going back and arguing over something that happened 3 years ago is worthless now. Prez decides and he's in office for 3 years, no chance of re-election. I always have loved David Letterman for what I saw as his bringing out the charm of people, but I have noticed over the last year or so, it appears he has become arrogant in his thinking. He makes digging remarks as if he is the all knowing regarding matters of the world. It isn't funny. It seems he's joined the "hate Bush" band wagon. Too bad he seems to have slipped over that edge. He has succumbed to the pressures of the rich and famous who think they know how the little people should live their lives. I loved David for his purity of heart, but that isn't evident anymore.

to complain that dave letterman confronted bill o'reilly or that dave letterman has been expressing his views to other guests is the act of lazy cowardice. if you do not have a problem with a regime that is very open on their comfort with torture and the insertion of government presence in our private lives. a regime that has begun to insert church into matters of state. a regime that smiles at it's own corruption. if this doesn't bother you then you are not an american. our great nation was started with freedom from oppression in mind, do you think that ben franklin would support wiretapping or corporate cronyism, do you think that george washington would laugh at the fact that he had gone to war mistakenly and ran up a national debt bigger than ever. we should stand behind people like dave letterman who choose to confront the fools that support our current government. we should use our voices to make one louder voice that lets those in power know that true americans exist and that patriotism does not mean to blindly follow. to all those who think that blindly following a leader solely because they are the leader; you need to open your eyes, question what is infront of you. A few comments/observations/facts:

Letterman has just as much right as any american, including the ever-mouthy, self-serving, self-righteous prick that is Bill O'Reilly (or, O'LIElly, whichever you prefer), to speak his mind on what is his own show. It is clear from the polls and elsewhere that America is growing increasingly tired of this war and, as usual, it has taken our soldiers coming home in body bags, i.e., Vietnam.

David Letterman is brave for speaking his mind at the risk of alienating viewers. Bill O'Reilly is a sideshow. Leave Anton Newcombe alone and out of this. He too has a right to speak his mind and I commend him for having the guts to do so. Oh, BTW, I don't believe he made that comment about Eric Clapton, so save it....it was probably, much like all things involving him, taken out of context. Unless you were there and heard him say it, don't throw stones.

Granted letterman had no real intelligent argument for O'rielly (who obviously has his tyrade's practiced in front of his mirror on a daily basis), but nor does most of America; the facts are, for the most part, skewed by our own emotions. Most carring individuals would get extremely angry and emotional in the same situation; especially on national television, and to attempt to speak elloquently at that point is near impossible. Letterman's stance on the war is that of what is now the majority or american citizens. Whether it's a just war or not (my opinion leans towards the latter) is not important anymore. In Iraq, currently, young men and women are dying everyday on bothsides; fucking soldiers younger than me are dying, comming back so psychologically damaged, or missing major apendages.
As for your opinions on Mr. Newcombe's blog, go fuck yourselves. He's just as entitled to his opinion as anyone else. He feels that the current state of the nation is pretty fucking bleak, it's his first ammendment right to say so or not, we also have the right to rebut or agree. Freedom of fucking speech, so to sit and complain about the man from the saftey, and distance of your website is rather cowardly in my eyes. It's my right just as much as anyone else's, anton's, or your's to bitch, and it sure as fuck doesn't mean that I have to agree either way. It's the constitution, look it up some time.
Also of note is that some 230 years ago the signers of the afore mentioned constitution, bitched about the state of their homeland while under imperial rule of an unjust king. To me they were fucking patriots, saints by no means, but they were none the less great men. To bitch and complain and strive towards a "more perfect union" is the american way, the way of the patriot, Democracy in action. To belittle someone else's opinion is counter productive. So instead of whining about Anton's comments, try analyzing them and actually using your fucking brains, and not some childish schoolyard in line with the herd bullshit yellow journalistic form of bitching and think up something intelligent to ad or reasons to disagree. Either way go fuck youselves.

First of all, nobody has even mentioned, O'Reilly made a great example of why he is such a scumbag, on the Lettermen interview. He said (I paraphrase)"I don't support anybody who calls our soldiers and Marines terrorists (IMPLYING that C. Sheehan said that, which she didn't) or calls the insurgents freedom fighters."
OK, go view it again. That is a great example of his dishonest style.
Wake up knuckleheads, O'Reilly is a douchebag, a rabble-rousing charlatan, Dave Letterman just put him in his place a little, it was long overdue.
AND he's a pervert who doesn't know a loofah from a falafel.

Ha ha, obviously Anton has an opinion worth debating and isn't that a good thing? O.K. so I dropped out of law school but one thing I've learned is that in any debate on any subject when you have no more material to back up your argument except insults then you've lost, regardless if your position is actually the right one. Why do you all have to get so nasty, and yes why bring up Anton in the first place if you don't think he is credible? I also think that the Republicans are the absolute worst at preaching to the choir and shouldn't point fingers on that subject either. Can't we all just get along?

do something creative with their lives.

bill can eat my shit.

he's a thug.

dave didn't have to say jack shit about the war,but the point that all of you fucking fools overlook is that most people are against this president and against this war.

it is wrong and our president is a total asshole.

remeber: bad government fails badly.

allways.

calling me name or taking comment out of context will not change the fact that my record will remain.they can not be undone.

furthermore i've placed them for free on the internet.

50,000,000 downloads.

think about it.

i think you loosers are in envy because no one really cared about your lame bands.

whatever,i'll go to england and record with kevin shields, play all tomorows parties, fuck great looking girls in scandinavia and you will jack off to internet porn and talk about other people that are doing things instead of doing anything.

This is all really amusing. I love Anton, but that is beside the point. Does it matter how eloquently David Letterman spoke? The point is that he did speak. He did confront. What is wrong with an emotional or passionate response? We are human! Not robots. We are being buried by money hungry power-whores and if that doesn't stimulate emotional truth and outrage, then I am even more worried about tomorrow than today. As far as self-righteous judgements and finger pointing at each other, why? who the hell are we to judge? Take a look in the mirror and ask why you are fucking alive. Then protect your life and what is precious on this earth. We were scammed and betrayed by this presidential office and we let it continue to go on.

Really..
Do you have nothing else to do but bitch about what Anton writes or displays on his Myspace blog.. It's called myspace for a reason.. It's his, he can do whatever the fuck he wants... People who believe they can make a difference usually do because the believe in themselves...

Oh and to the person who wrote this-
Anton is absolutely insane. Clapton will go down in music history as one of the greatest musicians of all time. Anton and his crappy band won't even be a side note. Dig is fun to watch in the same way I watch Intervention. He is a self-destructive, egotistical narcissist who apparently doesn't know good music from his own.
Posted by: sexy lingerie at January 9, 2006 01:35 AM

And how many albums have you made? How many fans do you have? How much talent and creativity do you have? If Anton is oh-so-crap as you believe him to be, then why does he have fans and people who appreciate him and his music all over the world? You're just a fuckwit aren't you.. Seriously... just admit it..

Oh yeah.. and GO FUCK YOURSELVES..
