Apple Store Fifth Avenue
Our friends who work at 59th and 5th are really psyched the neighboring big black cube is finally replaced with a breathtaking Apple Store. Or "the world's most powerful nerd magnet," as Boing Boing puts it.

Steve Jobs is in the house. U2 is not. And they're giving away free t-shirts and Macbooks, which are better than t-shirts.
Here's the CRAZY party. It's open 24/7/365. IT NEVER CLOSES! Excessive? Or perfect for those of us with late night cravings to buy a Nano?
The grand opening festivities start in minutes, and we'll find out what band is gonna play. My money's on Beirut.

There is no reason why this should be opened 24/7.

Hey, Apple is BLOWING THEIR WAD. Did you know you can buy computers online now???? What the fuck... I mean, I have a mac, but come on... this is ridiculous...the ruins of these buildings will not exist after the messiah comes.

analysts are saying that this store should do $40 million in sales this year. i guess that's a pretty good reason to open it.

Above and beyond any sales the particular store generates, it essentially serves as a marketing device for the company. Why do you think so many companies (even ones who have very few of their own retail outlets) put stores in high visibility areas?

that thing is pretty ugly.

I'm actually glad that its open 24/7, so I can check my email for free whenever I feel... like right now... thank you, stevie.

so who's the band? for those of us not cool enough to be new yorkers

Still can't believe Apple has been so succesful over such a simplistic marketing device. That's the genius of it I suppose...

I've been an mac user since 92. The reasoning of this store being open 24/7 leads me to believe that it's beyond gimmick and overall convenience. It is starting to smell like corporate greed. They create the most wonderful technology and always have, but please...the ethical boundaries seem to becoming smeared.

I wish all stores were open all night!

its open 24/7 for the shopping, sure. but the real reason is the 24 hr genuis bar, ipod bar, and the studio. this is NY. think of all the young professionals, wannabe directors, musicians, designers, art majors, and general consumers that now have unlimited access to tech support and one on one consultations for that project due tomorrow morning.

Har har har on May 26 I was in NYC for a school trip and we went to the Apple store after going to Chicago, and we got into the elevator at about 11:20...and got out at 12:05. Stuck for 45 minutes! Oh good golly gosh it was soooooo much fun. Only the inside door would open, not the outside one, and so we were like....ooooooookay... I was going a little Broadway crazy and singing Wicked and Chicago and crap, but it was very fun, until we started to sink and everyone in the store started staring at the freaky people inside the elevator, the suckers, they even had to get the police! But it was a grand experience.

To all the cynics who always claim how overpriced mac are, don't you feel silly? I mean how else can Apple afford to pay for multi-million dollar "doorways" into their stores.
-Sincerely,
