Apple Unveils New iPod, iTunes

Apple just announced a brand new video iPod that's less than half an inch thick, and comes in black, just like the iPod nano. The new 'pods come in 30 GB ($300) and 60 GB ($400) sizes.

Also, the iTunes music store is now selling music videos for $1.99 apiece in iTunes 6. You can also buy some ABC TV shows, like Desperate Housewives, to play on your video iPod, which is equipped with video out. Its new dock has lil' sensor for remote control. Damn does this thing look hot.

Gizmodo is as good a place as any to read all about it.

Apple's just churning these things out now, aren't they? This sounds/looks like a better buy than the Nano. I need a bigger iPod. Now I just gotta find a way to get 400 bucks.

Sounds like overkill to me. Unless I'm stuck on a plane or subway traffic, I don't see much reason to dig out a video Ipod and watch a tv episode. And who watches music videos anyway, never mind on an Ipod? Maybe a few movies on the Ipod would make it worth a buy, otherwise pass..

Pssh. Somehow I doubt it'll play any format that I'd ever have any inkling to play (.mov? Apple's mpeg4? I shudder). I mean, setting aside the fact that I'm not a rich bastard and thus don't have the cash for something like this!

Okay, okay, I'll admit it . . . part of my reflexive bashing of the new iPods is just 'cause I love the quizzocal glances when people look over and see that I'm listening to music from . . . something other than an iPod? How is that possible?!?!?!! And in comparison to my shiny Samsung YP-MT6X-C (so l337 it doesn't even have a name, err..), those equivalent iPod Shuffles look like cheap little hunks of plastic.

But to be serious . . . is iTunes actually offering music vids of the same caliber as the standard scene mpeg-2 rips? The only time I've seen decent commercially available music vids is when they come on DVDs . . . otherwise even the ones as bonuses on CDs are of pretty poor quality.

Video iPod? Meh. An iPod dock with a remote control sensor? Yay! The remote controls that you clip on the top of an iPod are so crap they make me want to shit and piss and puke at the same time.

Yeah, I don't really see the point of a video Ipod unless you were able to convert your DVD's to some format that would play on it. I really doubt that Apple is going to offer great music videos, much less great TV shows. Now, if I could rip my Office and Kids In The Hall DVD's and put them on, or say my Rushmore or American Splendor DVD...that would be great. But then again, it would only be useful for long car/plane trips. Do these video Ipods still play music?

Is anyone else disturbed by the idea of paying for music videos? That's like paying for an ad....

John: I know what you mean...I can't believe anyone's going to pay $2 to be able to watch the video for 99 Problems on a tiny screen.

But then I'm also amazed when people pay even more than that to be able to play 99 problems through their cell ringer & have it sound like a rat fight in a cellophane bag.

Mark, you'll probably just need to convert it to the appropriate format; I think this will be MPEG4.

Keep in mind the resolution won't be good enough for a TV set; only a small iPod screen or computer monitor. Old technology in a new (and prettier) package.

No matter how pointless we think it to be, I know from observing 12-14 year olds that watching the newest Click Five video on a 2-inch screen would certainly make you the shit.

TWO whole hours of battery life while playing video

yes, TWO, or if you drop the extra hundo on the 60 gig you get THREE!

you could almost watch LOTR on one charge!!

it's NOT a video iPod. if you think about it as if were one, then it would be pretty disappointing.

this is an update to the iPod line. now it has the ability to play videos as well as music and photos. think ipod with video playback capability. video is a pretty cool feature, but that is all it is, another feature. if you look at their website, they just sell it as the new ipod, not the video ipod.

James,

Yeah, it looks like Apple learned from their past screwups. When they first came out with the color ipods they made this big deal about it being the ipod Photo but nobody gave two shits about it so they ended up just changing it back to regular ipod (with color!).

I think Ipods will eventually be out-manuevered by a silver-bullet type hand-held that will serve as jukebox, tv, arcade, phone, blackberry, and web portal all in one. I think the past sucess of Palm Pilots and Blackberrys (Blackberries?) demonstrates that people will carry around a larger chunk of plastic if it will do more for them.

I think Sony has the best chance of doing it if they build off of the Playstation Portable. Apple is too focused on music and style at the expense of expanded functionality, better battery-life, and a larger screen.

I think Apple's half-hearted jump into the cell phone world demonstrates how little effort it will expend to expand the ipod functionality beyond being a modern day walkman. Basically all they did was license some software.

Total legit Q -- how can Apple say it holds 15,000 songs? I mean, there are some EPIC songs out there. In which case, unless you're downloading two minute pop songs, you don't get that many. Shouldn't they specify "holds 15,000 / approx two minutes songs" or something like that. Either way, Apple needs to chill on it's releases and pay attention to the quality. I've had to return my 40 iPod THREE times and they still couldn't get it right with the "new" 60 one they sent me for free.

KAT_- this is the disclaimer that they put on their website, print ads, etc.

"Song capacity is based on four minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding."

I just bought my iPod mini not too long ago, and I think they're just fine. Oh well, someone out there is REALLY rich. I KNEW that music videos on your iPod was coming, I just KNEW it!!! TV shows, on the other hand... What ever happened to actual TV's? I can't see people actually buying the shows...

Really don't think people are dying for videos on their Ipod.

I honestly think the apple website should in some way warn consumers that they are coming out with something new in a certain line. For example, if you are in the market for an Ipod, then their site should say something like "October 12, Video comes into play". Some teaser bullshit. Instead you just wake up and something new has arrived before the ink sets on your fresh apple store receipt where you just bought the old Ipod.

So many kids are going to be watching porn at the back of the school bus. You know where these ipods will end up? In the principal's office. They won't be able to get them back until all the porn looses it's appeal.

Anyways, I am happy with my ipod mini. It's blue, and the fact that I can pick a colour was the selling point.

PSP nerds, check out the Location Free TV that Sony is pimpin'. Not a bad feature. I imagine phone is forthcoming. The video capabilities on this device crushes that of any iPod - other than HD storage, which currently doesn't exist on the PSP.
