As Heard On TV
Some of Stereogum's favorite television series returned to air this week, and we kept tabs on which cool bands provided the soundtrack.
While it's not even Sweeps yet, we're crowning the TV Exposure > Album Sales winner Grant-Lee Phillips. Two songs from the same album on two hot shows: How I Met Your Mother had "Boys Don't Cry" and Grey's Anatomy had "Under The Milky Way." Both from Grant's excellent nineteeneighties covers album. Elsewhere, the wife and I are enjoying a game of name-that-singer with every new episode of Weeds. So far this season, "Little Boxes" has been covered by Elvis Costello, Death Cab For Cutie, Engelbert Humperdinck, McGarrigle Sisters, Maestro Charles Barnett, and Aidan Hawke (whose version is streaming here.) Coming up: Regina Spektor, Jenny Lewis, and Tim from Polyphonic Spree.

AND we have high hopes for Studio 60's soundtrack. Sorkin gave us a newfound respect for "Brothers In Arms," so we'll be keeping an ear out on his new drama.

last year Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah were played VERY briefly during the office at Jim's Party..... that's all i've got maybe we'll hear some more this new season..... And if you don't watch, the office is the best sitcom on television right now.

I don't remember what show this was - I really want to say a recent episode of "Standoff" - but I was inspired to download Abra Moore's "Family Affair" off iTunes.
The biggest discovery I've ever made was on a fantastic episode of "Without A Trace." It was the episode where the boy goes missing after being harassed at school, and eventually tries to hang himself off a playground structure.
The song playing was "Fire Sign" by David Berkeley, and it was so damn good. I ended up buying both his albums, and am forever grateful to CBS for introducing Berkeley to me.

yay for glp getting some non-Gilmore exposure. Actually, you could also say "Under the Milky Way" was the week's winner, as the Church's original was used on another show (maybe Jericho? Kidnapped? I'm in a DVR blur).
One nitpick about the music in the Grey's premier. Both GLP's "Under the Milky Way" and Gnarls' "Gone Daddy Gone" were used in flashback scenes that happened at least a year and a half before those songs came out.

I saw the "Smith" episode with Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek." Sure, a good song, a great song. But seriously, that's been done. It was cool when "The OC" did it, and alright when a few other shows followed suit, but now it just feels played.
Maybe "Hide and Seek" will be the new "Hallelujah," the song that everyone uses ina lazy attempt to convey sadness or melancholy.
