Ashlee On 60 Minutes, Eminem On Saturday Night Sorta Live

Was Eminem's performance on Saturday Night Live a bit shady? He utilized a backing track; you could hear two Ems rapping during "Mosh." Then, about two and half minutes into the anti-Bush tirade, he lowered the mic from his mouth and momentarily stopped rapping, but the vocals continued. I'm betting Eminem drew attention to it intentionally just to fuck with everyone. Or to show solidarity with Ashlee Simpson (awww, sweet). Because Eminem's talented, I assume you'll let it slide.

Horatio Sanz as cranky Elton John (who recently said at the Q Awards "Anyone who lip-synchs ... should be shot") closed Weekend Update with a tune about Ashlee (sung to "Tiny Dancer")...

She came on this show,
started lip-synching
and blamed it on her band.
It wasn't cool now
to blame those poor dudes
It's bad enough to have to play in your band.
The following day, 60 Minutes (!) ran a segment about Ashleegate's impact on Lorne Michaels' long-running live comedy program. Leslie Stahl witnessed the Jude Law episode rehearsals: after Ash performed, she ran past Leslie in tears, upset about her performance/acid reflux.

Lorne Michaels told 60 Minutes he didn't know Ashlee was planning to lip-synch, and that the only lip-synching in SNL history has been "during dance breaks ... if it's all about dance, and that's a relatively recent phenomenon."

Click here to watch the 60 Minutes segment (Real).

Bush, Kerry, and Andy Rooney have yet to weigh in. But NY Times says there's nothing worse than a rockist.

this is ridiculous stereogum

eminem ALWAYS has a reverb/back track

but he always sings live

unlike the guy he brought up (50 cent) eminem has amazing talent and great rhythm and tonality

he's a great rapper

i respect his political views as well

he knows bush is not a great president and released mosh specifically to get kids to the polls and vote against bush

i highly recommend all of you vote for badnarik or kerry or nader

anyone but bush!

No, Eminem doesn't SING live.

You know why? Because he doesn't SING at all.

He is a RAPPER. He raps. Case close.

Still Eminem > Ashlee.

He should remember the words to his songs though.....and I don't take political advise from Eminem. No celebrity for that matter.

It's extremely common for rappers to rap over their record, hence the DJ. Everyone smoke a j and be happy.

i was wondering if you were going to say anything about this. em was obviously using a backtrack, which is what ashlee INTENDED to do. ashlee isn't a seasoned vet and so she didn't know how to handle the mistake. em probably would've recovered quickly, and of course like you said he's got more credibility, but this per-faux-mance brings it down a knotch if you ask me.

i think that at least with pop music you don't really have to maintain a level of credibility; you know you're pop. with rap you shouldn't be able to just 'rap-along' to your track on tv and get away with it anymore than ashlee should be able to.

also whats with releasing a political song weeks after the registration deadlines? too late. and the slapdash 'vote' sign at the end of the performance... why not just say 'vote' into the microphone? is it not back-tracked? jesus.

finally, lorne michaels is full of crap, does anyone remember jennifer lopez' performace of 'play'? barely any dancing, all back-track, and a FAN BLOWING HER HAIR AROUND TO BOOT OMG SO GLAMOROUS. lame. LORNE <3'S LIP-SYNCHING 4 EVA.

fuck credibility. i don't see why it's any different if ashlee simpson lipsynchs or if eminem does.

then again, i didn't get why anyone made such a big deal about ashlee simpson in the first place. most popstars lipsynch anyway. if there was anything wrong with her performance it was her dancing. if you can call it that.

i don't know if solidarity was the reason for eminem's flawed performance on snl. what was up with the dude checking the monitor for the song lyrics? was the ball not bouncing?

he simply looked out of it -- as if he didn't want to be there.

I didn't see Em, I watched the first two skits. I can remember the MTV awards a few years ago when Em performed and he did "My Name Is" and he rapped along live with the guide vocal. From all that I've read about his performance this past weekend it sounded as if he was totally trying to make fun the whole Ashlee Simpson incident.

Slightly ot, I saw the Kate Winslet as Norah Jones skit and I thought that she sounded a bit like Norah and that she also had a great voice.

during dance breaks? but britney lip synched the whole thing.. maybe they consider her whole performance a dance break.

i've seen eminem play snl before and he's done that whole "stop singing while the tape is still playing" thing before. so an "ode to ashlee", i don't think so.

When are people going to figure out that the shocking thing about SNL is not the occasional lip snyc act, but rather the fact that they frequently struggle to get a laugh out of their own studio audience. The show is an embarressment, it should be dragged out to a field somewhere and shot.

Did anyone read that NYTimes article that was linked in this post?

I felt it got it half right, at most. It gives far too much credit to what it's calling disco-pop music and it's pitting Rockists vs. everyone else, when in reality it's more of a free-for-all battle out there.

anyone who cares about ashlee simpson enough to be angry over the snl thing is a fucking retard. give it a rest, no one claimed she was a musician in the first place. the nytimes article about rockists gets right to that point. the people the writer describes is someone we all know-- style over substance losers who still think the strokes are better than wilco because thier press pictures are cooler. the biggest problem is that the record industry is getting just what it wants (besides your money through lawsuits), everyone is talking about it. LET IT GO.

Not only did he lip-sync (stop it with the PC 'guide vocal' crap), he used teleprompters to make sure he was mouthing the right words... three of them across the front of the stage.

This is also a common live thing now. Steven Tyler used to use giant posterboards taped to the floor, but switched to teleprompters. Elton John has been known to use them.

I have more respect for Michael Stipe who at least is honest about not being able to memorize his new songs. He just puts his lyric sheets on a music stand next to him.

"the people the writer describes is someone we all know-- style over substance losers who still think the strokes are better than wilco because thier press pictures are cooler."

Actually I think the article was talking about the opposite of this: the "substance always over style" people. It's calling into question what substance these people actually value, and if that "substance" really deserves the most respect.

And I think the Strokes are better than Wilco. Wilco's boring. And they have uncool press photos.

Seriously, Em has been using backing tracks for years. But its better than most rappers who feel the need to shout their lyrics in concert. have you notice that? Its so damn annoying.

He is worse than Ashlee because he raps. He speaks, he needs a backing track to talk to someone? No, so he shouldn't need it for rapping.

And he never knows the words. Last time he was on SNL I thought the same exact thing. I was wondering why he was looking down at the prompter. Its because he's a closet case who should just shut the f up.

I just wish she'd stop being a fucking crybaby over everything GAWD! she had to know she couldn't sing this just pushed it over the brink, along with her career...the only thing keeping her afloat is the few wanna-be-pseudo-punk-teeny-boppers out there that think she's totally "it".
and as for eminem when i saw the performance i just thought "did anyone else catch that?"
it was like an old japanese movie where the mouths dont quite go along with the sound..yeah...like that...but as previous posters have stated..it's sometimes standard they rap over the tracks...so whatever..ashlee still sucks...eminem is still okay..just aint diggin' the song Em....the premise is good though....

AND....she didnt have any business crying no one told her to do that hokey-ass shit. she shouldve waited til' they put the track back on...true performers know how to carry on with the rest of the song...jeez!

Why do we like music, is it because of the beat,
because of the song, because of how its sung, or the meaning of it?
or all of the above?
if we like the song, why should we care if the singer, or rapper, or rockist does the song the way they do it?
all they were doing was performing it, doesnt change the fact that it was sung by them in the first place, so forget about the lip synching because it already had happen, its in the frikin` past!!!
