Avril Lavigne Covers Coldplay

Last week Miss Lavigne dropped by Jo Whiley's Live Lounge and delivered a song that sounds suspiciously like Coldplay's "The Scientist"! (Zing!) In Avril's hands, one of Coldplay's best ballads is rendered truly tepid, and dare we say ... a little pitchy? Perhaps we're just partial to Aimee Mann's take. We're not anti-Avril, but between this and her mawkish take on "Imagine" (hasn't Darfur suffered enough?) we're thinking girlfriend should stick to the mall punk. Check out "The Scientist" at Mixtape Maestro.

Arvil always looks like someone just told her twice.

$30 mill for A-Rod? I'd rather pay Cal Ripken that money to make patterns with me out of my old denim jackets.... so how's this summer going?

Her singing is so abrupt. She's got no nuance or softness. It's just harsh.

Had to post the Aimee Mann cover of The Scientist to counter-balance that hideous Avril version.

Also, why did she pronounce it 'pro-gress'? She can't sing in her own accent?

i'm having a hard time figuring out if the other site is being ironic or not: "pureform performances like this prove that Avril is one of the best pop singers of her generation" what kinds of drugs are they taking? even while being sarcastic i wouldn't dare to type that sentece.
and she sound like me. and i don't have millions or record deals. this is all very depressing

Sean, what are you talking about? She's Canadian and Canadians pronounce "progress" that way. Terrible cover, though.

Would someone like to share a downloadable Aimee Mann version? Enough of this streaming crap.

I actually like Johnette Napolitano's (from Concrete Blonde)version better than Amiee Mann's although BOTH are faaaaar better than Avril's.

Johnette's version is on Itunes and on her webpage, I think.

What the hell happened to the poor girl's eyes? They're all "Exorcism of Emily Rose"'d-like.

Matthew, I know plenty of Canadians and haven't noticed any of them pronouncing it that way, especially while singing. Most I know tend to say 'prah-gress', drawing out the 'O' as though it were an 'A'.

I can't claim to be an expert on every Canadian dialect but given the fact that Chris Martin's pronounciation of the word is pretty distinct - even among Brits - I'd say she's simply aping Martin.

But hey, like you said the performance is terrible regardless.

Pro-gress is the proper "Canadian" pronounciation, although many Canadians have started using prah-gress, probably because we watch so much American TV up here.

Awful cover. That girl always sounds like she is thinking and feeling nothing while she sings.

Yeah, I know what you mean, Nicks. Well, maybe there would be more feeling if she actually wrote her own music.

I'm not a fan but at least get your facts right: she writes all her own music or at least as a part in it.

"I'm not a fan but at least get your facts right: she writes all her own music or at least as a part in it."

It has recently been reported (on NPR, if I recall correctly) that almost everything on all her albums, including the debut, was written by a team of hired hands. If she has any influence, it appears to be inserting 'teen-talk' in order to make the songs sound young.

Chantal Kreviazuk recently withdrew a lawsuit claiming songs she wrote with/for Avril were rejected, sending Chantal off the project. Then the songs go back on the album without proper credit or financial compensation. However, because Chantal and Avril are managed by the same company, and Avril is a bigger star than Chantal in the US, she was made to drop the suit "or else".

I think the shock of it all is that we're surprised, in the day and age of lip-sync snafus, careers built on panty-flashes and nipple-slips and the occasional plagiarisms, that we don't see these things coming.

Didn't the writing team The Matrix write pretty much everything on her debut? And didn't she more or less admit that openly? Come on now.

Avril Lavigne truly disgusts me.
She has no emotion for anything she ever plays/sings.

"girlfriend" is the most immature, stupid song i think i've ever heard.Avril has no talent, and it really shows in that song. She just tries to be what everyone else wants her to be...and not who she really is.I don't understand how someone like that can be looked up to and so famous.

I'm a big Coldplay fan.Chris Martin's voice and Coldplay's music is so unique and beautiful.Coldplay is such an amazing, talented, respected band. And for someone so fake and un-talented like Avril to even TRY to cover them is absolutely disgusting. The vocals are terrible, pitchy, emotionless, flat, and she sounds like shes 10.She sounds like shes just shouting into the microphone. She is sickening.

Avril is just a sad excuse for a musician.
Coldplay is genius.

Avril asked that I post this on Bandaids to clear up any confusion over her cover of The Scientist that we got from Radio1. Apparently the version we got from Radio1 was edited and Avril was concerned that she sounded like a robot Personally I thought it was awesome but I'm happy to oblige!

"Hey Guys, my cover of The Scientist on the Bandaids sight is not an accurate representation of my recording. I sound like a robot guys, this isnt how I sound. The real recording is much better, trust me.. ha ha ha.. here is the original... The one that's currently on Bandaids is edited inaccurately."
