Band To Watch: Akron/Family

A few things to love about this song...
It kicks off in 5/4 time, riding a persistent Jew's harp lick, then three minutes in shifts into straight-up Jeff Buckley.

Akron/Family - "Running Returning" (MP3 link expired)

Akron/Family are folky multi-instrumentalists who moved to Brooklyn from "rural America" (according to their Young God bio) a few years ago. (But just so you know they're still rural at heart, they've got a budget website and big-ass facial hair that rivals Kings Of Leon.) Sonically, think Thom Yorke fronting Animal Collective. Definitely check out the kids' self-titled debut if you're a fan of weirdo labelmate Devendra Banhart.

Michael Gira from Young God describes the album's recording process: "As we worked, a song would sometimes be described as too 'red' or not 'aluminum' enough or some other arcane (to me) reference, but inevitably, corrections made with the aid of a screwdriver or maybe the sanded metal rails of a staircase resulted in an unpredictable but 'correct' result."

Akron's live gigs are supposedly epic so I hope to catch 'em at Northsix on 5/20.

Yup these guys are great. i've been listening to them since Stylus magazine mentioned them as the disc of the week. They even got reviewed in The Montreal Gazette (local paper)>> not sure what that means, they usually only review crappy pop crap. but yeah this is one of my favourite albums of the year so far.

They are great guys, and live, holy shit, so good. We played with them at sin-e a few months back, just recently went to the record release at tonic, they back michael gira, it's breathtaking.

also, come to tonic on saturday night to see grizzly bear and paul duncan play (shameless plug sorry)

im still kicking up a profile of the lads...caught them a while back and am still midly underwhelmed by the record...but mostly because the live experience is just so brilliant.

thier contributions to M Gira's latest Angel's of LIght disc makes AOL an entirely new band...check that thing out

i love this album too. hey shameless plugger, funny you should mention grizzly bear, I saw them live a few months back and they were awesome. I think akron and them would make a nice double bill. Has anyone heard the new electrelane? I'm dying for a sneak peak. anyhow, I'll take akron/family over devendra anyday

Yes, definitely check out Angels of Light. I'm excited to see Akron/Family backing Michael Gira in a few weeks. And kevin, I agree - a million times better than devendra.

damn i need that electrelane bad. it's not out yet is it? I have one song I got off a blog. i think they are such a solid band. noone ever talks about them. it's crazy. they should really be much bigger than they are. and lanky, amen to that! you know though that they'll never reach devendra heights b/c what we (i'm assuming you and I are on the same page) hate about devendra is what makes him sell. pointless kookyness. all an act, but then again I guess everything is.

Damn, I'm digging this track. So the album is worth it? And those beards, holy shit! Anyone heard Devotcka, while on the topic of folky bands? They do this eastern european fused with rock thing that is really interesting.

Roly-poly gorgonzoly! You were right about that track turning straight-up Jeff Buckley. Loved it.
