Band To Watch: Pictureplane

Pictureplane, aka 24-year old Denver-via-Santa Fe multi-media maker Travis Egedy, popped up on some radars this past April via his remix of HEALTH's "Die Slow." Before that, he remixed Crystal Castles, collaborated with hometown New Mexico bud Zach Condon, and self-released his debut full-length Turquoise Trail, which Lovepump reissued digitally in March. Now the same label's tackling his excellent sophomore collection Dark Rift. If may very well be the dance record of the summer for people who aren't used to dancing: Egedy's expansive mix of '90s house, dreamy '80s synth-pop, poppy darkwave, tripped and colorful Black Dice-style noise, bottomed-out hiss, weirdo Sublime Frequencies drum circles, and a surprisingly ready-for-the-club semi-sheen creates endlessly interesting soundscapes. He has art-school style, yes, but the guy also writes well-crated hooks with actual emotional pull. Or, in his words:

Once every 26,000 years our planet crosses through the elliptical plane at the center of our galaxy known as the dark rift. The songs on dark rift lyrically deal with humanity entering a new age or next phase of our existence...

We're offering "Transparent Now (Thin Veil)" and"Goth Star" as illustrations.

This might be the greatest shit ever recorded, but I'll never know because that dude's picture makes me want to punch him in the chin.

Yeah, these are the kind of people that give various decades bad names.... 10 years from now if someone sees this picture, all they will be able to think is "People in the 00's dressed like this?" Art-school style? I see no legitimate artistic statement ever being made with that attire.

Denver go hard.

Pictureplane is definitely worth the hype. I dig the hell out of his drawings, too.

If it doesn't matter what he looks like, then why does Pictureplane try so damn hard to look so different? And by "different," I mean ridiculous...

Very intelligent critique of the music, Paul....

Yeah, I clearly wasn't critiquing the music. I was drawing attention to the fact this clown is an irredeemable fashion victim.

But I actually did, after my original comment, listen to some of it. I can honestly say, "what's the fucking point when Deastro and Sportsday Megaphone and, oh, about 200 other bands are doing the same thing better than this guy?" So there. He's an also-ran AND a bad dresser.

Pitchfork's got a nice track review of Goth Star. I thought I heard Stevie Nicks...

The song reminds of a slowed down "Not Exactly" by Deadmau5.

Thanks!

Actually, the Pictureplane remix of "Lost Time" from HEALTH's DISCO album is one of my favourite songs. I can't wait to hear the new HEALTH record, but this album sounds really promising as well!

"Black Dice-style noise" ? "art-school style" ?
whoever wrote this sounds like they're some teenage poser that thinks everything cool was invented in the past 5 years...

Avoiding this music because the guy doesn't wear your idea of appropriate attire is ridiculous.
I can only imagine if people ignored the music of Bowie, of Montreal, or Devo based on their
aesthetic qualities (or lack thereof ?).

It seems there is a double-standard between the sexes when it comes to a musician's fashion.
Watch Bat for Lashes don some tights and a garbage pail but God forbid a dude wear something other than skinny jeans and a v-neck.

Is Björk missing out on your attention because she wears whatever she wants?

i don't think anyone was saying they didn't actually listen to the music because he looks like that. i listened to it, and think it's pretty decent (despite the canned beat that could use some tweaking and the vocals that get a little queasy) ...but agree that this dude tries very hard to look like...uh...whatever he looks like.

This guy is clearly drinking the Wham City koolaid.

I mean he sounds like the midpoint between Dan Deacon and Girl Talk, dresses like he lives at the Copycat, and has a remixed Future Islands song on his myspace.

Can we expect this dude at Whartscape '10? I hope so, I'm definitely digging some of his shit.
